At the beginning of the fight, both Frieren preemptively activate their guards, implying the use of a spell allowing for an instant cast. Both of them see themselves as capable of activating their shields, so they change the spell and blast the purple lightning. Before Fern's initial attack, one can observe the Clone teleporting to close the distance. While we witnessed Frieren moving swiftly, we didn't actually know how. Near the end, The overarching strategy of the confrontation was for Frieren to activate her guard, rendering her unable to detect magic. However, before the Clone was struck by Fern's Zoltraak, clone Frieren did not activate her guard; instead, she focused on the original's staff. So it also implies that the original was planning to cast something else which ended up creating an opening.

Other mages: Fight with water, ice, earth, illusions, etc. Frieren: Casually starts *breaking the fabric of Time and Space*
@philiumweasels81719 ай бұрын
The insane part is that multiple times throughout the show they clarify that magic depends entirely on being able to visualize… which means that she can do that because she knows and can imagine how to do that. She knows how to visualize the amount of matter compressed in a blackhole, she knows how to visualize reality breaking down. Like we understand that Ubel is powerful because she can’t visualize what makes her attack ineffective, but on the opposite end of the spectrum we see Frieren understanding perfectly how reality works and can visualize how it breaks.

and serei still said she's not a class 1 mage. I would imagine that means realitive to elves, so her level. Imagine if frieren actually perfected her magic to the highest degree of competence. No "there's a slight delay when i'm against zoltrak" no fluctuations in her mana control, and those spells pushed tot heir peak. Frieren would be a genuine calamity. if she demanded something it would have to be given to her. Luckily she's a degen who would rather have clothes desolving acids rather than world domination.
@goliathcleric9 ай бұрын
@@Smol_Eri It's not that Frieren isn't as powerful as a first class mage. She outclasses every first class mage by a wide margin. The reason Frieren failed is because she can't envision Serie passing a mage like her; that is, a mage who isn't focused on combat. All of the others that were passed were combat mages: Denken, Ubel, Wirbel, etc. Or they were prodigies who did something no human should be able to do, as in the case of Fern. But Frieren? To Serie, she's weak for a thousand year old mage because she spends her time collecting magic instead of training for combat. And compared to Serie, there is no meaningful difference between Frieren and any of the first class mages in terms of power. Serie's *suppressed* mana is greater than Frieren's maximum output.

Frieren didn't even use any of the spells here against Aura... Just shows how much of a non-threat she was to her. Damn
@Laezar110 ай бұрын
Well himmel told her not to use flashy spells to not destroy the bodies, so I have to assume last time they thought she blasted the corpses with a black hole lmao But also it's not necessarily true that aura isn't a threat, these spell probably consume a lot more mana than what she typically uses and aura wasn't fighting herself feeling confident in her raw mana. I think it's safe to assume that aura was fully capable of putting up a fight but typically wouldn't want to use her mana unless necessary because of how her spell works. And by using flashier spells frieren would 1) probably reveal that most of her mana is hidden 2) risk lowering it enough that aura's scales would work on her. It's likely aura would still get blasted before she can really do anything but I'd say the method frieren used was actually the best one at her disposal. Like, this whole section of the exam was also to show how raw power doesn't do all, with ubel being able to beat sense because of how they view magic fundamentally differently, being overconfident seems to be a great way to die as a mage in frieren's world =p

@@beastgaming7879 you missed the point but ok =p
@mc4tarzans10 ай бұрын
That wasn't the point at all when she didn't use flashy spells. Himmel had a stern talking to Frieren when she most likely used high AOE skills to just blast the armor away the last time something like this happened. So she learned a spell that just allows the enchantments on the bodies to go away, thus preserving the bodies/armor, but that spell required a lot more mana per soldier to be taken down, so she was somewhat worried about the fight (since her win condition was to keep the armor/bodies intact, while also disabling them). Once Aura took out the scale, even Frieren comments that shes sorta glad that she was going to use it, since that would make the fight A LOT cleaner, require basically no mana and disable the army at the same time. Aura would have most likely lost regardless (even assuming Frieren tried to take down the army using only her mana heavy de-enchantment spell), but her taking out the the scale artifact basically gave Frieren's win condition on a silver platter.

@adamwu456510 ай бұрын
This fight isn't just visually spectacular. It's peppered with all sorts of little details that internally consistent with and/or callbacks to prior events and actions. At 1:05 when Fern snipes the Clone from behind and the Clone blocks, it uses a 360 degree defence shell. This shows us that Fern was trying to attack it within its mana detection vulnerability window, and the Clone couldn't sense what direction the attack was coming from, and had to resort to a more mana draining full shield. Frieren creating the Stone Golem is both a callback to the scene where she made a little golem to entertain her companions in the past, and to the mention that Golem creation was the specialty of the First Class Mage Lernen, who made the escape bottle Golems. In this fight and others earlier, we see Frieren using types of magic that are equivalent to or of the same class as the specialties of the other Mages, often to an even higher degree of power and effectiveness. She demonstrated a rapid movement/teleportation spell akin to Laufen's Jilwer in the last episode. She showed a pure cutting spell like Ubel's when she fought that Demon assassin with the magic wire. She used a wind tornado spell and a hellfire spell like Denken, manipulated earth and rocks like Edel and Richter, and in addition to all that also uses cosmic level spells that none of the other mages have shown. It really accentuates just what it means to have over a 1000 years of experience collecting and learning spells. At 1:39 the Clone isn't using just a regular black Zoltrak, its the enormous Super Black Zoltrak Qual attempted as his last ditch attempt to overwhelm Fern's defence. And at 2:04, after being grazed by Fern's first shot, we see the Clone Frieren swing around to try to shoot back, only to have her staff and arm hit by another Zoltrak (which is probably the attack that took off that arm). In other words, Fern was able to cast the attack spell faster than Clone Frieren could and landed the critical blow, definitively demonstrating that Fern's spellcasting speed is indeed faster than Frieren's. This is peak visual storytelling. You could literally watch the animation frame by frame and there is story information presented in almost every frame.

This is what good shows do. Attention to detail. Frieren still suffers from anime-style over-explaining, but anime is adapted from mangas/LN in a way that's faithful to a fault sometimes. It's generally about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the dome. Probably because adaptations barely account for the change in medium, they just do 1:1 translations from page to screen. It's a bad practice, tbh. At least Frieren manages a bit better than the norm.
@plipplop72810 ай бұрын
@@djx7134 Wow, first time I've seen someone shares my opinion on anime adaptation sometimes being too faithful. I'm a huge fan of manga and rarely watch anime, but when I do, I prefer they do it with more creativity, not just 1 to 1 moving panels.

that scene as fern shoots clone frieren actually has even more detail, real frieren doesnt even attempt to cast anything else as clone frieren approaches because she knows fern's able to catch this window. clone frieren notices this and immediately gets alert and looks for fern, but is still too late. aside from showing off clone (and by extension real) frieren's instincts, it also goes to show that until then clone frieren really didnt see fern as a threat like frieren said.

@VocalMabiMaple3 ай бұрын
It's not purely just holding back. The basic spell is the culmination of 70 dedicated years of human research into one of the deadliest magics of their time. It only got defanged by the development of ordinary defensive magic. It's still a spell that is incredibly deadly when it hits its target. It's still definitely holding back, but it's not the only reason. After all, as she states, "Ordinary offensive magic is sufficient for mages of this era"
@pumpkingamebox3 ай бұрын
@@VocalMabiMaple It’s a gun spell. But we do have two kinds of Zoltraak, the black and the white. As Lugner reacts to the white Zoltraak by saying it’s been modified to kill demons specifically. I don't think there is ever a dispute on that front. Fern is barely over a decade old in practice. That's toddler time in magecraft. Most mages take that long to get a basic to intermediate understanding on matter states, not to mention any sort of control. Within that time, Fern has been pushed to master all that and put it in daily application. That's neck breaking pace. For her to hold out that long against a sorceress who can casually cast black holes (which, judging by the size and stability, would require the energy equal to that of many CERNs) at that young an age is a stellar achievement. What's crazy about Frieren is that if you actually slow down and look at these shots, many of them don't have that many colours, alot of parts are undetailed and the framerate seems rather low. At least compared to "flashier" shows. But when you press play it looks like one of the best shows in the universe. Madhouse show absolute mastery in "the illusion of motion" that anime/cartoons is all about. Smear frames, moving the camera, playing with the field of view, alternating between cuts with low and high amounts of different colours, all of these draw the viewer in and entices you to move your attention around and creates an incredible effect. Not to mention the amazing soundtrack that keeps the velocity of the scene high even the visuals slow down a bit to show the magic "winding up" so that it can release that momentum later. Been watching anime for a long time and Frieren deserves every bit of praise it gets. The attention to detail, the vision of the direction and the creativity of the entire team is just immaculate.

I love the magic spells in this series. Most shows spells are streaks of light resulting in with fireballs, usually white for good and red for bad, etc. Good guys have good guy magic, and bad guys, bad guy magic. In reality a spell is a spell, and whoever learns it can use it, there is no good or bad magic, only good or bad users. Here, each spell feels like it has a story, like some great mage a millennia ago spending their entire lives and probably inflicting catastrophe creating it. They are not pretty either, some look like the manifestation of a horrific illness or curse, and upon witnessing them strike disgust as much as it does awe.

@alejandroojeda15725 ай бұрын
But when you look into it closely, strategy plays a strong role. Frieren is basically trying to figure out how she can trick her clone to miss fern's attack. The first time the attempt is pretty bad. Fern is exactly ahead and the clone easily stops the zoltrak. The second time fern attacks from a blind spot, but frieren looks at her for a split second and this gives enough info to the clone, which covers. This time she needed a full cover though. The third time frieren has learned its lesson and instead of looking at fern, she makes a small movement as if she were going to attack with the staff. This distracts the clone for a split second which is enough for fern to finally hit it. So there's plenty of strategic growth in this fight, it's just not explicitly stated.

I know people like the black hole, but the spell in 1:22 is insane eldritch cosmic magic and it might be my favourite representation of a powerful spell that I've ever seen. It looks like a chaos nuke made of magic. You can see two motes of magic that create a small sphere where they begin decaying random particles of magic that wildly move around and crash into each other. They burst out of their shell and fly into the air, still shedding off particles. It gives off the vibe of radioactive material giving off chain reactions before exploding. It looks like Frieren catches the detonation in a light-blue field, almost as if it's stopped time, or a prison made from the laws of magic. Regardless, the shell breaks into fragments of reality. I'm not sure if the dungeon was really thinking properly when it decided to make clone Frieren, because that spell would have wiped out everything in a kilometer radius for sure.

I've been obsessed with watching these scenes because, like everyone else has already stated, its such an incredibly well orchestrated fight. But there's something I've now realized about the pitch black Zoltraak seen at 1:39. 1:39 is the perfected version of Qual's Human-Killing Zoltraak. We know its Zoltraak from the spell circle design thats unique to Zoltraak. Going back and rewatching Qual's fight against Frieren and Fern, this moment perfectly mirrors it. Down to the backshot of blackness pouring around the magic shield in front of Frieren. This time though, the spell breaks through it and hits its target. Clone Frieren saw the opening, and capitalized on it by using the most lethal spell in her repertoire: a perfected black Zoltraak. Humanity took Zoltraak and made it the basis of their offensive magic spells. Frieren took Zoltraak and made of it a perfect Demon-Killing Magic. But secretly, she made this spell... because while ignorant of many of the aspects of Humanity, she continues to love Humanity. She understands though that, humans being humans... she would have to prepare a countermeasure. After all, Serie said it herself: most likely only the Demon King, or a human mage, would be able to kill her. So Frieren must have taken it to heart, and this is the proof of it. Perfected Human-Killing magic. In my head canon now Frieren will eventually pass this down to Fern, along with the secrets of the Force Push power.

Can we just appreciate "I don't recognise this attack as magic". It's not that she doesn't know the spell, it's that it's so far beyond her, she doesn't even know IF it is magic.

richter's specialty is using mana to manipulate physical objects, I wonder if this is what frieren is doing, manipulating the physical realm around her with mana rather than using mana to attack directly. Like if she inverted gravity or something to make fern fall into the wall.

@@holycrapthatsalotofketchup253Jobless Reincarnation is the worst anime I watched in recent years. The story starts out with the guy being a pedo creep that's always horny to him having erection problems. I'm sorry but if you really think that show has anything to do remotely close to this might make my blood boil. Makes me think into what kind of person you are if you could symphatize with the main character, you know the pedo creep. I know it was popular with a bunch of people and it's concerning... your average hooman is mentally ill and degraded to oblivion.

I really like how Frieren's words came back at the end of the fight. "I underestimate you." The clone perceived Frieren as the bigger threat, and devoted all of her attention to it, but as soon as Fern made her move, *all* of it's attention was directed towards Fern when she realized who the real threat in the room was, to the point that she was completely open to Frieren's sneak attack.

Nah ain't no way boi, Frieren started the fight with a planetary devastation and ended with an almighty push. Don't tell me Pain was one of her mentors lol.

Maybe Frieren mentored Pain! She definitely has the age to have mentored many people.

The only thing more awesome to me than Freiren being able to cast a black hole is that she has practiced it so much she knows how to abuse theoretical physics, forming and moving matter around it, to destroy it.

I love that too, I imagine mages do some special training for total calmness during battle. Kid Fern couldn't fire a single spell at that monster because her fear blocked her. A mage needs focus to be effective. Only thing I'm wondering is how the hell they can tolerate pain so easily lol maybe there's some basic painkiller magic they all learn?

Ferns specialty being magical machine gun is always great. She’s shooting basic killing magic. That’s just magic bullets 😂

Manga spoilers: Going back to this fight is crazy when you consider what she said about how the last time she was backed into a corner like this was 80 years ago, when she fought and defeated the Demon King with Himmel, Eisen, and Heiter. Disregarding Frieren as the anime already displays how awesome she is: >Heiter saying that Frieren's suppressed mana is 1/3rd of his own is still an extremely impressive feat given Frieren's own reduced mana is like that of an extremely experienced mage. Heiter himself, as a drunkard priest, had mana comparable to 500 years worth of training. >Eisen we already know is absurdly strong and durable, but we've seen that he's even evenly clashed with Rivale, the God of War of demonkind (who claimed himself to be their most powerful warrior). Eisen even left him with a large wound before they had to end their battle early. >Himmel, disregarding him defeating the Demon King, was able to evenly fight a Great Demon who had mana and spells that rivaled even Frieren. He did this while under the hypnosis of a Sage of Destruction. Essentially, while dreaming about marrying Frieren, he freely moved his body and fought several extremely powerful demons. YET, we know from the members of the hero's party themselves that the Demon King gave them an extremely difficult time when he fought them all at once. Just how fucking strong was that dude????

a lot of poeple complaining that frieren is kinda boring with not much action. Thats on purpose, so they can throw on every fight as much money as they can, and thats the right choice!

The show that starts slow and sad then gives you the best fights. I was already down by the first episode. Then we get to the fight with Fern and Stark vs the demon emissaries. That’s when I knew this show was the whole package. It delivers on every front.

This is simply a great story that happens to have some action every now and then.

@@KrazyTrumpeter05 the action acts more like a seasoning, it enhances the flavor but doesn’t replace what already makes the show good on its own-which is the character development and humor.

It's not action genre anime, so ofc there will be less action scene than average bs crap anime out there
