So it kinda seems like the creams are better for a healing bruise effect, maybe one that's a couple of days old, and the alcohol actived colours create a more vivid, fresh bruise? I can't believe I only found your videos a few days ago, you're great!

Thanks for doing this comparison video! It really sealed the deal for which product I choose to go with. As nice as it is to have products for around the eyes, the Ben Nye palette just doesn't have the realistic look I need in my FX products.

That spot on your leg where the paint wouldn't stick was because you weren't letting the alcohol flash off before applying a second layer. Essentially you were wiping away the first layer when trying to add the second. I have had exactly the same problem myself cos I am always hurrying.

Great comparison video! I find that skin illustrator palettes are perfect for simulating bruises and such because it gives that barely there wash of color and the sunken in look that makes it so realistic. Ive played around with cream colors and i have found that if you blend it in insanely well and use the tiniest amount of color you can get a very similar feel as the alcohol activated

I really loved this video. I've had the skin illustrator palette for a while now but I haven't had much success with it, but watching your technique and seeing how long it really does take to build up layers really helps. I'm definitely more used to using creme makeups so that might explain my impatience with skin illustrator.

I saw some videos where I think I see people using the Illustrator FX palette to do that, but I don't know if this is correct for this usage or if it have toxic components. Anyway, thank you so much for your videos, they help a lot and you are an amazing artist!

When using the Ultimatte FX palette from Ben Nye, you can use a few drops of 99% alcohol to create subtle washes that can be layered. When using full strength, be sure to set each layer with Neutral set powder... to keep your colors distinct and don't turn into one color of mud. You can also finish with a light sealing spray like Final seal.

The SI palette dramatically looks more realistic compared to BN. They're two different textures which results in the final look. Not quite fond of the colors on the BN palette. Although I regularly use BN in my kit, I think when comparing the two, SI is the winner.

99% Alcohol evaporates super fast. You will notice how lower concentration eg. 70% once sprayed take longer to evaporate. For the record, if you wanna disinfect your makeup you go for the 70% IPA as it stays longer on the surface and will kill more bacteria. But the 99% is the only one that works for AA paints. Just mentioning that as 99% IPA is more expensive and this might save you some money.

Hi Kiana. Thank you very much for your videos / information. I have doubts about skin illustrator. They are activated by isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and safety data of this alcohol says: "Contact with skin and eyes: Flush with water for 15 min in either case you need medical care.". Painting with Alcohol goes to the skin, then ... no problem ?. I've also seen some videos that used for other purposes such alcohol swab and use it directly on the skin. I asked but nobody knows me explain. I imagine that all are equal IPA. Greetings. Sorry for the English.

I have a question on skin illustrator colours and hope someone can help. How well do they work on wax of any kind? For example on scar wax? For some colours just like watercolours the waxy surface would be a problem, the colour pearls off. I am considering getting a skin illustrator palette and wonder if it would also fit to colour selfmade wax-moulages?

i wanted to do your beginner zombie makeup for halloween so i bought cream paints because thats what you used in the video...cream paints suck they are not for beginners, its so horrid and waxy that its impossible to blend or do anything with the product other than apply it straight to your skin. i also didn't know that i had to set it and i don't have setting powder. disappointed, would much rather have gotten alcohol/water activated if i knew the difference between these products

likeastarbaby are you absolutely 100% sure you got cream paints? i have done the mistake of thinking i was using cream paint, when in actuality i was using water activated paints. some water activated paint seem like cream and feels like thick waxy cream paint. i helped with the make up for my last schools theater production and we had the most relieved revolution when we found out our paints where water activated and not cream. we were so puzzled, because it took soo much product to cover a neck evenly!

likeastarbaby also if it 100% is cream paint you could try using coconut oil to "water" it down a bit and make it creamier, but you would definitely to set it if you did

Ingeborg Mikkelsen yup, i even tried using both water and alcohol with it and contacted the company and they told me it didn't need a medium because they were cream paints. the £16 palette was basically useless though i couldn't mix the colours at all so i had to use them straight and it all looked a bit shit tbh :(

likeastarbaby well that sucks! It's so annoying when you buy products, and feel really excited and inspired to use them and they turn out like that. I really hope this company has a good return policy.

Ingeborg Mikkelsen well because i didn't have anything else i did have to use it quite a bit on halloween, so i don't think they'll take it back now. there isn't technically a fault with the product anyway, its just that cream paints are horribly waxy and difficult to use for beginners. i did give them feedback saying that it should say more on their website about the product but got no response lol
