Maul, when I was in my early teens I studied Silat here in The Netherlands. My guru used to talk about his kampung, where teachers and students would gather, and perform Silat. Even with the modern age twist, cellphones, sneakers, baseballcaps, this is exactly as how I pictured these meetings to be in my head. Thank you for this, take care Sir.

@axess1202 For my Silat teachers, as well as my friends in this art, Silat is the ability to protect your loved ones. We don't fool around with it or show how badass we are, we use it when we really have to. This feeling is widespread among Silat practitioners. It's probably why Silat as a sport never really took off. We treat it as a concealed poisoned blade we carry for safety. I mean, look at the thin guru at 4:51. When you first saw him, did you think he could wipe the floor with you?

That is sad to hear. Imagine if Guru Maul here in this video, learning years and generations of martial art of self defense and then ending it by not teaching and passing the knowledge down to the next generations. That is very very sad indeed. What he is teaching is definitely for self defense which is why you use it only when defending and protecting your life or the lives of others that depends on you but it is unavoidable even if you really choose your students. It might be some of your student came to learn it to kill and injure others, or they came with a mindset for self defense and somewhere in the future change and use it to injure others for the wrong reasons. All you can do is pass down the knowledge and hope (and pray for those with religion) for the best. At least you know the knowledge will be carried down for generations ahead.

the first part- greetings and general banter and showing the 'bunga' (intro-means 'flower') second part- man in hat is saying 'it'll be hard to drink water after this' third part- 'tarik selajur' = 'pull your arm back immediately and don't grip him or you'll get stuck' + 'we have to think where to put our feet' fourth part: (man in hat): 'it works even better on big guys' "kaloi lehernya" - 'hook his neck' "berdouble" -'doubling' (lol)

Lets be frank, be honest.. the old chap, were good, in their days. The younger generation of silat practitioners, like Maul, is just respecting the elders. Yeah sure maybe their techniques were good back then, but now, the arts are evolving. People learn about the biomechanics of human anatomy, the leverage, how to exert power and speed with leverage etc more and more. The youngens like Guru Maul are the ones who are going to improve and refine the arts from what we know today. Thats why, clearly, you can see the slight skepticism or disagreement on younger generations there. Not that they condemn some of the moves, but they know that it can be made better and more efficient. But, since its a culture to respect elders and the teachers, they just nod. lol.. It's all about respect. I can guarantee you, what Guru Maul knows now, are way more efficient..

Silat is an 'inner' martial art that doesn't emphasize competition, fame or ranking (apart from seniority) or even rewards for winning. Of course there are competitions and world championships but like judo or wushu, those are somewhat toned down for international competition and real masters don't teach for competition. MMA is usually about blasting someone's face off or choking them into submission-neither is a silat technique in most forms.
