So a 'life sentence' isn't really life in prison forever. it refers to the longer period between 20-50 years (depending on state). This is why you'll see people get multiple life sentences in a trial. If I had to guess it's probably a result to the fact that we humans only lived between our 20s-50s during the middle ages, due to rough living environments and diseases.
