Lev Shvartzman, the son of a Jewish bank official, was born on 25 July 1907 in Ukrainian Shpola, then part of the Russian Empire.
Despite his family background, Shvartzman, who left school at 14, was allowed to join the Komsomol in 1925. Komsomol was a political youth organization in the Soviet Union.
Having worked as a newspaper seller, he was taken on as a reporter in Kiev, and in February 1929, was transferred to Moscow to work for the newspaper Moskovski Komsomolets.
In 1935, Shvartzman was recruited to the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs - the infamous NKVD - the ministry which oversaw the state security and police forces.

They have created and bought into this romanticised view of lost Russian glory, one that is devoid of the inconvenient truths and realities of what those past times were like.
