So today we have one of my favourite cars, and in my eyes one of the most beautiful cars ive ever see. Now this cars have a kingspot down in history for being one of the best FWD cars ever released, and indisputably the greatest FWD drive on the market of its generation.
So im excited to see what all the fus is about.
Now then;
The looks completely stepped up to the plate; the exterior can still compete with cars coming out in 2018 and an average person would never guess that the car came out in 2001.. and the same goes for the interior, the interior easily out shines most cars of today, so for Honda to release that in 2001 is absolutely outstanding.
The engine and the gearbox in this car were in absolute harmony with each other, so strong, so intricate and so beautiful.
Now; surprisingly i feel like the handing let this car down, it just didn't step up to its credibility; now i know that there are many factors which could influence this and it is a very old car, but either way i still felt underwhelmed. The power was a huge isnt for me as squeezing 220bhp out of a 2.0 NA engine is amazing, but i just wish they had a supercharged or turbocharged option.
Either way; amazing car. Love them.
Thanks to Jay (jays_dc5) for bringing it on to the channel.
I hope you all enjoy,
love you all see ya next time.

As the first UK owner of this car - 1) it does have AC (the dial with A/C written on it). 2) when it had Bridgestone RE070's on it, it handled like a train. 3) it can take dropping to 3rd at 60, don't be a girl and only go to 4th, you will overtake faster that way ;) and lastly, if its gonna be in a video on KZbin, at least put the Work wheels back on hah

The work wheels with RE070’s are on as soon as the roads get dry enough ! It has also had a recent geometry set up from the guys at AK automotive , and a new tubular manifold fitted too!

I agree about the VTEC. I used to mock people who bragged about VTEC until I bought one of these. When it hits around 5700 RPM, it almost feels like a turbo pull with the burst of power you get from it. Such an amazing engine.

A small turbo with a big turbo lag Since it doesn't come in till late. When it comes on, it's small compared to a turbo. However, it's good for what it is. Turbo owners won't really notice it as much though. Has its own benefits

+BossBaugton..The Dc2 might be the "legend", but the Dc5 is still just as good if not better in my opinion.. And it has a better platform for performance increase with the K20 without spending tons of money to do swaps or boosting them. By simply adding bolt-ons, suspension, weight reduction, and a tune, the dc5 is an animal on a road course. Stock for stock, the dc2 does feel lighter and feels better around turns, but again, I dont think it matters much once the Dc5 is modded correctly. And the Dc5 just looks better in my opinion as well. But I love them both. Both are just amazing cars.

There's a lot I'd disagree with in this review, but it mostly boils down to - you need to get this car on track. Your respect for someone else's car and the fact you don't push too hard on the public roads meant you could only get a limited perspective. Good video though, no hate here.

Yep, the DC5 is a bloody great car, much more modern in look(really hasn't dated much) and feel and more civilised, but the DC2 is the one that gets the near universal praise and claim of "best FWD evah!" stuff. I have one so I have to say that or the old metal bastard will drive through my front window and kill me... Great video. Like your reviews.

Not the ep3 running gear, substantial differences, intake manifold, cams, compression, rev limit, ecu, 4th 5th and 6th are shorter, dc5 has an lsd and ep3 is open diff. If you've driven both you'd notice there's a fair difference

Owned all the type r’s more or less and the Dc5 stock is every bit as quick around a track than the dc2. Better all rounder by a mile dc2 unless k20 or fully built hasn’t loads of power
@MrGrentch
@MrGrentch 6 жыл бұрын
Oh I'd agree with you JDM Phil. I'd have a similar driving history to yourself. The DC5 is the better all rounder. It's more tractable, has more power, more comfortable and is scarily modern looking even today, though I would argue that the DC2 is one of the "purest" R's Honda produced. And it's not about the power.

Adam patterson you would be mental to do that. If u need to feed the honda bug buy a cheap well specced Ep3 for half the cost and 9/10ths the thrills. Those twinscrolls are the one to have. Would keep it and watch the prices rise. Although DC5 are on the rise too. Just cant justify thecost over ep3 for me.

I have the American version. 2005 Acura RSX TypeS with the k20z1 (detuned k20a) Made 210hp at the flywheel in stock format. With just bolt on parts, (intake, race header, and full exhaust) and a reflashed ecu and tune, I am now making 214hp at the wheels. If I swap out the intake manifold and throttle body, along with another tune; it will bump it up to around 235 wheel hp. These cars respond very well to increased air flow, both in and out. You could get to 300bhp very easily, and I assure you, in a 2700lb car.... its a very fun time to be had!

Type S was the best Integra they made. Balanced so much better than the R, but that;'s what you get after years of refining a model. Type R was madness and the Type S was the version you could live with that did everything right.

The DC5 is a beautiful car, but nowadays if you buy a Civic Type R EP3. You have 90% of the fun as a DC5 but at 25% of the price. You are paying for the "JDM BRO" and rarity. Better looks, a limited slip differential, and 15more bhp is all well and good....but for an extra £7k it's really hard to justify. You could have a mint Turbocharged EP3 for that £7k and it would kill this, and be more "UNIQUE" if that's what you're after.

I have owned a UK ep3 and JDM DC5 and they are worth every bit of the 4-5xs the price. Plus like all iconic JDM hondas. They hold their value so its kinda irrelevant. I owned the EP3 for a year and lost 25% in depreciation. With the DC5 it appreciated 30% in a year. Also you are comparing one of the best looking Hondas to one of the ugliest. So on that alone they are worth it.
@mrdayumfine109
@mrdayumfine109 6 жыл бұрын
DivlMint I've owned 2 UK EP3's and a JDM DC2 Integra so I know a thing or two about Honda's. I'm not arguing that the DC5 isn't a better car than the EP3 or even prettier, the DC5 certainly is.... My point is that you are paying 5x the amount based almost solely on looks alone and the "exclusivity" of having something "JDM". You are paying 500% the price of an EP3 for a 10% power gain and 50 less Kg and a Diff. I'd be willing to pay double the price for a DC5 but 5x more is ridiculous. The car is not 500% better.
@nismoylan
@nismoylan 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have had a JDM DC2R also and my first car was EG6 SiR so i have been around hondas for a long time.. I know what you are saying and when I bought my Ep3 I had the same thought. But what I confirmed is that an EP3 for the most part that is 5xs cheaper than a fresh import dc5 is going to be a shed in comparison. So realistically you need to compare a mint EP3 to a DC5. They price gap gets a lot smaller. Then the recaros, brembos, LSD, hydraulic steering, more powerful engine and better looks don't seem too bad given what it would cost to put that on an EP3 or buy a JDM ep3. Not disagreeing with you but I think that if someone has the money for the DC5 its the best way to go. EP3s are phenomenal cars for the money all the same.

Attacking B roads whilst in Vtec is a scintillating experience. The chassis could definitely handle 250hp if they released a turbo version but for anyone who hasn't driven one of these on a B road, trust me the power delivery and eagerness of that Vtec engine married to those chassis will never fail to put a smile on anyone's face. You can tell by Lee's reaction whenever Vtec engages he can't help himself but to laugh and smile and that's what gives this Honda so much charm. It's such an easy car to enjoy more responsibly compared to what's out there today and I guess we don't get that anymore considering FWD hot hatches produce approx 300hp now.

I've had both the DC2 and the DC5. The DC5 is better in every way. With the DC5 the steering response isn't quite there but can be made plenty good enough with simple mods aswell as tyres make a huge difference. My other complaint is the shifter, nowhere near as good as the old Hondas but this comes down to the switch to cable shifter setup. I'm biased towards N/A cars but completely disagree about it needing to be turbo, it's already 20bhp up on the EP3 and lighter and don't even get me started on it being just an overpriced EP3 lol. Also you are shifting way to early and the unpredictability and bad steering doesn't sound right. Hear you on the bushings though, mine has had a lot of bushing upgrades and it will definitely help. With some nice mods power wise aswell you would be suprised what it can do against modern cars with a bit more power. I got a video of mine vs a Scirocco R on my channel. A lot of people used to turbos will think it feels slow and that's just because you don't get that insane torque spike pushing you into your seat but you are definitely moving.

Ive owned EP3 and a Turbo and i can tell you rigfht now that after 120 the non turbo struggles. Type R i had would do 160 yeh but it would take 10 miles without interuption to do it.It crawls up and takes miles and miles to go off the clock. With a turbo its way faster after 120 of course. Hitting turbo in 6th if you get me. Also the EP3 had no torque at all. Turbo i got now has 300nm of torque and you can certainly tell the difference. Dont get me wrong the EP3 was,is a cracking looking car and handles brilliantly. Its the only car ive owned that actually used to rip the front tyres literally off the rims.

Then again these high strung N/A engines have more torque at the very bottom before turbo kicks in on charged engines. And the turbo engines usually run out of puff at around 6000-7000rpm with really narrow powerband of ~3000-6000rpm. These N/A engines continue climbing all the way to the redline of 8300-9000rpm depending on the engine. And if you turbo,- or supercharge one of these i-vtec engines you can make a reliable 500ish hp all day long with stock internals. At that point those cheaper turbo engines would have had their bottom ends build etc. And if there would be way more power needed the turbocharging of a honda i-vtec engine vs an already stock turbo engine would be similar price. But the Honda engine would be more reliable.

Yeah theres not a day where I don't smile while driving or looking at mine. Have the TRD Spoiler installed and have the C1 Hood scoop, greddy front lip, TRD side skirts and sports M rear bumper spats to be painted and installed. Next step is 18" wheels followed by some coilovers. The style and look of the car is the main reason I love it. I was tied between getting a Celica or an EP3 but the coupe style was what won me over. The difference you’re seeing in steering when comparing having your foot down and when you’re going slower is just the nature of FWD cars, you have to remember you’re pushing power to the front wheels so they want to naturally push forward, as soon as you take your foot of the gas there will be more play in the wheel when cornering. Not car specific!

If you're a turbo owner, you won't really notice the Vtech. However, if you are only used to the na cars then you will feel the rush coming on. Like the first time in a turbo car.... just not as dramstic. After getting rid of my WRX and Evo, I intentionally bought an na 4 cylinder to drive to work. After not being in a turbo car for a good few months, only then did I feel the rush on the SiR and typeR.

I own a dc5 and its one of the best cars i own to date stock its not the best especially if you have driven a more up to date vehicle with all the electronics but after changing some stock parts like suspension bushings shocks stabilizers ect the car handles well this car has thought me a lot on how to drive a front wheel drive car i absolutely love it. Drive one with a good set up you'll see the difference.

I didn't know these were so beloved abroad. Certainly there's a cult following in the Honda Community for it in the US; in the states it was branded as an Acura RSX, and the closest to the type-R was the type-S which is basically the same car but with a EDM Civic type R engine and a decisively more "American" interior. Still a great car, I picked up my type-S for 3 Grand (~2000 GBP) in pretty good condition so I'm surprised in Europe they can fetch up to five times more.

wicked mix of review cars so far, shame you havnt got the opportunity at the moment to try stock versions of the cars, ive changed things on my own cars over the years that have totally ruined them, even down to the tyre can make such a difference, but overall I cant wait for the next review top work dude.

The main reason why the steering feels like it is, is due to the diff. Either it’s getting old and the diff needs work, or the diff is locking up mid turn. It’s an odd feeling mid corner to plant the throttle instead of lifting off. Great video though dude!

Try get a mk2 mg zs 180 to review lad. Not the fastest car in the world but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. They handle great. Tiff Needle praised it for being "one of the best handling fwd cars he's driven" when he test drove it on fifth gear. And the sound they make with a decat exhaust. Ooft! Like an old f1 car! Keep up the great content. 👍

A worn out slider in the steering rack can be the main cause of the vague steering feel you found. The ep3 is also affected from the same part wearing out. They do have a/c as standard too unless the owner has removed it.

I guess this guy has never heard of a cold air intake, better intake manifold, long tube header, cams, Valve springs and retailers.. tuning… you can easily get 250hp out of these engines with some mods to make them flow better and add fuel and a tune. I’d prefer that to a sluggish factory turbo car, then once you start making more power with a factory turbo car it becomes fragile.

Take your point about the power. It's defo not a turbo type car and they didn't suffer torque steer cos they had eff all torque. The Hondas back then were a different approach. It's all about the high revving keeping it on cam on very twisty roads. Kinda like a throwback to earlier times. Very specialised. Cars today are more jack of all trades. TBH it's one reason why I like your channel, you do the oul myth busting thing and don't just go with the flow. Some out there would still be saying "one of the best FWD ever!" even if they were upside down in a ditch with their hair on fire and their GoPro shitting itself. I'd still say that if you can get your mitts on a standard DC2 Type R, give it a whirl. You'll Nah Lads on it being a noisy, rattly old feeling car, but I'll bet you'll be hitting the sick lad button above 6k on proper twisty roads.

Vtec switch-over is pretty subtle on a K20, much more obvious with a B18/16 or an H22. Try a good DC2 if you can, that's the one with the good reputation for handling.

Don't get me wrong the ep3 could go around corners on rails. So much so it used to rip tyres of its rims. Done this 4 times in a year. So eventually I stopped going around corners fast as tyres cost me 80 quid each. Good car quick to 120 then shite. Takes 10 miles to get off clock as it crawls up. Needs a turbo. Now I got a turbo and after 120 it keeps pulling! Good torquey car which is what the ep3 isn't. What did it with me and the ep3 was pulley cam wear making chain slip again and again. Never again.....
