Since Breaking Bad has become so huge it's easy to forget how much of an upset this was back then. James Spader had won three times already, Hall and Laurie were both in very popular shows and had never won, and Mad Men was AMC's breakout show and the biggest talking point at the time. No one was really watching Breaking Bad back then. So happy that Cranston has since become one of Hollywood's most sought after dramatic actors.

I think we're going to have a Frances Conroy situation there. She got so much acclaim for the third season of Six Feet Under, even winning a Golden Globe and SAG Award, which go by calendar years since they also do movies. But when it came time for the Emmys, the timing allowed for the inclusion of The Sopranos, a much buzzier show, and Edie Falco ended up taking it. So I think McConaughey will beat him although I don't think he deserves to.

The Emmys actually caught onto Breaking Bad before the hype, which is extremely rare. They usually just stick to awarding the same shows. Look how long it took for them finally nominate The Americans and Friday Night Lights.
