Actor Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Trumbo, Last Flag Flying) is easily one of the greatest actors of his generation. But he has a remarkable perspective on art and how its tenets might be useful to other areas of life. For instance, Bryan posits, don't get into something unless your heart is fully in it. This applies to actors signing up for projects they're not earnestly invested in just as much as it does people working in jobs they aren't passionate about. "Trust your feelings. Trust your instincts," Bryan says, because embracing ambiguity instead of looking at life as a series of steps leading to a goal can lead to a much healthier outlook. Bryan Cranston's new book is the spectacular memoir A Life in Parts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BRYAN CRANSTON:
Bryan Cranston won four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Walter White in AMC’s Breaking Bad. He holds the honor of being the first actor in a cable series, and the second lead actor in the history of the Emmy Awards, to receive three consecutive wins. In 2014 he won a Tony Award for his role as Lyndon Johnson in the bio-play All the Way. In film, Cranston received an Academy Award nomination for his leading role in Trumbo. Among his numerous television and film appearances, he was nominated for a Golden Globe and three Emmys for his portrayal of Hal in FOX’s Malcolm in the Middle. He is the author of his memoir, A Life in Parts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Bryan Cranston: You know Americans have a lot of great qualities, and one of them is a general work ethic. I think we’re a nation of hard workers.
And that being said I think sometimes we reach down too far into our youth and expect them to produce sooner than they should be able to.
I think people gain a tremendous amount of wisdom when they travel, when they wander-when they allow themselves, as I did, to get lost. And maybe you’ll find yourself somewhere. Or at least traveling forces you to be social. You have to get directions, you have to learn where things are, you’re attuned to your environment, you have to be more careful about the weather and where you’re lodging is going to be, where you’re going to eat, how you’re going to get from one place to another.
When you’re there what is it you want to see? How can you find a place for you to actually just rest? It’s an experience like no other. I love to travel and I enjoy not knowing where I am. It’s an unusual thing. I’d purposefully teach that to my daughter, who’s now 24 years old, to not be afraid of not knowing where you are. So I’ll go for a drive or go for a walk in a different city and my wife will say, “Do you know where you’re going?” “Not really. Just kind of exploring different places.” As long as you have a sense of direction you’ll find your way, you’ll figure it out. And I do that in foreign countries as well: Just kind of wander and meander and trust that you’ve paid attention to at least the basic requirement of where you have to get back to in order to find your way home.
But I think it is, I think we look down now to 16 year olds and say, “Where are you going to go to college? What are you going to do for the rest of your life?” And it's like... they’re not fully baked yet! How do they know? Give them a break.
Just say, look, “I think after high school take a year off, take two years off. Join the Peace Corps. Travel. Go figure things out or just enjoy yourself.”
For the first time in their lives they’re adults and they don’t have to be somewhere. They’re not told to be somewhere. Get used to that freedom. Get used to having the need to self-govern yourself, to be able to employ self-discipline-or not. Or you realize “Oh my god, I’m really slovenly! If I’m not told I need to go to class I don’t go.” You might discover something about yourself.
“I need order. I need that. I like that.” Some people love to be, say, “this is where you have to be and this is what you need to do.” Are you that type of person or are you a type of person that wants more freedom in your life? And I think exploration, travel, it provides that.
In 1976 I had just finished my second year of college and realized that, after an experience in an elective acting class, that I wasn’t going to be the policeman I thought I was going to be. It was better if I didn’t continue on with two more years of an Administration of Justice major because I knew I wasn’t going to become a policeman...

I was a straight A student that took a few years off of school to work and travel. When I finally got home from my travels I sat down with my dad and asked him what I should do. I knew that having a college education would better my chances at getting a well paying job but I had no idea what I should study. He said to me, "Listen kid, I'm 62 years old and I still don't know what the hell I want to do. Get used to not knowing because if you're anything like me you probably never will. But, that's ok, just go out there and give it your best shot." I think that's some of the best advise my dad has ever given me.

ppl come and go in jobs all the time...not all jobs are permanent especially for young people. i left all those workplaces in good terms and is still to this day in contact with some of the employees and bosses there. i didnt go job hopping for the sake of just getting jobs. heck most of those jobs were jobs that anyone with a common sense can do. if i were to compare and choose between a life of going to college then getting a career until retirement , than to what i decided to do, believe me i'll choose the latter. always.

Great advice. I was a fairly quiet and introverted teen and wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I up and left to go overseas when I was 21 and ended up working and travelling for 10 years. The people I met, stories and adventures I had are priceless and made me into an outgoing and interesting person. Some people mature psychologically early and some don't, I certainly didn't, probably not until my 30's did I grow out of having to get hammered every weekend but now I've got it out of my system (still have the odd tipple of course), have my own house and business and haven't looked back

@@williamkjellstrand5280 haha! Thanks William. I'm not sure if I'd say it was amazing, well, it actually was for me and I certainly had a great time and have no regrets. To answer your question I'll give you some more context. I'm a Kiwi (New Zealander) and went over to Australia by myself. I know it wasn't a HUGE move but was pretty big for me at the time. I did anything and everything I could from doing room service in a resort to packing meat in an abattoir, labouring on building sites to building railway tracks, working in retail to picking Mangos, chillies and bananas. One of the best jobs was working on a dive boat in Cairns taking people out to the Great Barrier reef every day. I love computers so the last thing I did before returning was managing the online sales for a big retail chain. The fruit picking was also fun because I stayed in working hostels and met so many people and had some crazy experiences that I'll never forget. :)

@@williamkjellstrand5280 Wow, you are very young my friend! I'm pretty sure I wasn't thinking about being financially stable for a family when I was 16, that is amazing! Good on you for thinking ahead. I would absolutely recommend travelling while you are young. 1 or 2 years isn't going to affect your long term financial stability I can assure you. If you leave when you're 19 you'll be back by the time you're 21 and you'll be a much more worldly and interesting person. I forgot to mention that I studied in Australia when I was 28! Shit is hard. I'm in a top 10 STEM graduate program. I work 6-7 days a week. I'm successful so far and have several publications. I still don't know what I want to do after. No idea. But there's one thing I do know. Work hard, no matter what point of your life you're in. Get that high GPA, test scores, and publications. Why? Because when the time comes to deciding and figuring out what you want to do, you won't have closed doors but opportunities. That is the best advice I can give to anyone who is still young.
@PJ-ku5lp
@PJ-ku5lp 5 жыл бұрын
@John Doe - Yea, I had all the opportunity but none of the focus myself. A candle in the wind is essentially useless without a lens. I had limitless interest in science outside of school and it never translated to the classroom. Now these days I see more of the closed doors because I squandered it. I mean I'm successful in IT, but largely unhappy because it's just the thing that occupies my life between weekends. Your words are something I hope to help my kids understand, work hard and unlock as many doors as you can. You can always decide to not go through them. It's hard to go about it the other way around. @Jack Burke - I think what's done this generation a great disservice is saying the sky's the limit. There's literally too much opportunity for everyone out there. I know that sounds dumb, but if you're at an intersection of two roads, you can focus your energy in one or two directions. Today people walk out the front door into space with the proverbial unlimited options and just freeze. I think Bryan's advice is interesting, but not everyone can do this -nor does everyone need to. It's awesome when it works out, but I know a lot of people that have drifted far too long to catch up to any one thing anymore. Some are happy with that, some are greatly depressed. Focus and hard work, even -maybe especially- under duress, is far more valuable than people realize anymore.

Tony Brisson THIS. many people argue that they're too poor or busy which could be true but in reality if you're willing to be uncomfortable (both financially maybe and physically) then travel is limitless! when you're picky about only staying in 3 star and above hotels with catered breakfast, that's when your options are limited and you have to be making good money. otherwise it's just buying random flights, taking buses, having no plans just going with the flow :)

IMO, sometimes being absolutely destitute is the ONLY way to really experience the right things. The things you can really learn something about yourself from. When you literally only have your own two hands, two feet, and wit to help you survive, you'd be amazed at what you can do. The experiences "broke" people often have in the course of normal life, are richer moments than most. I'm not saying this from my leather arm chair while drinking scotch either. I've been there. Some of the most real, eye-opening, and inspiring moments happen in the situations when you are most vulnerable.

I just love how relaxed this dude is. Being a senior in high school and seeing all of these different paths laid out in front of me, not knowing which one to go down, is made even more overwhelming by superiors always telling you that you need to act NOW, and know what's good for you NOW. This guy's attitude is the antithesis of that.

Taking a year off after high school was one of the most important growing up periods of my life. If your in high school and if there's any uncertainty at all before college, take time off to really think. There's other areas of your life that needs your attention, more so than anything that's yet inconclusive. When you're ready and have an objective, that's when you should go head first with your education, or any path you choose to take in life. Fuck what anybody else thinks of your decisions; it's your experience, not theirs. We learn from our decisions, no matter the outcome.

And I need a motorcycle for what Bryan is talking about (although I had that plan for a while now). I agree, but actually young people of this generation statistically travel much more than any other generation before. Travel has gotten easier and more affordable. I mean we have smartphones and GPS these days, you can literally go almost anywhere and get by.

At a 19 year old living in Australia, traveling is also expensive. With the house market being so expensive I would rather save my money to get a house loan, I think lots of other young people have the same idea.

Pfft young people are traveling all the time now. It's like the cultural fad of our generation. I think Instagram has really allowed people to glorify it and also "ego-tise" it too. "Oh look at me, my life's awesome and I'm an interesting person because I was in another country for 2 weeks". Then they come home to their dead end job and life routine. Young people are traveling because it's what they think they should do now.

Boy, this spoke directly to me. At 64 burned out with my J.O.B. bought a new motorcycle & tent and went down the road less traveled for ten weeks. I became addicted to the freedom. Got rid of EVERYTHING except what fits in my saddlebags. Some days I don't know where I'm going until I check the weather. I've found by not always trying to find a destination I can concentrate on finding who I really am. I'm becoming richer by the day with all the interesting characters I'm meeting along the way. Thank you for posting this just for me.

I’m definitely a man of isolation and peace, it seems I’m at home when I have freedom to do as I please. Working a standard job for the rest of my life just ain’t for me, I need to be active/or isolated but doing something I love or can appreciate that is for the betterment of all, I’m 24 and I still don’t know what I want to do but I’m working to stay afloat and enjoying the journey. I hope one day to find the key to my destiny.. I hope my dreams can save me..

Just some advice from one stranger to another - don't fall into the trap of thinking that working a boring job means you can't do something for the betterment of all with the rest of your time. A lot of us just use the boring job to pay for our 'purpose' or passion - the job doesn't have to *be* the purpose. A lot of the time, the best things that you can bring to the world won't make you any money anyway, and so it has to work this way around. All the best.

This 100%. There's something about venturing beyond your community bubble and safety net that expands your perspective on things. When I left CA for the midwest, I remember feeling super excited to start a new adventure on my own. That excitement turned into realization that I was on my own to figure stuff out, into frustration over my stumbles, into culture shock and a feeling of smallness in the universe, into confusion about what I was doing with my life, into homesickness and self doubt...and then into a realization of what really matters to me when the old peer pressures or family expectations are removed from the equation, into a habit of catching my mistakes and creating plans for myself, and into a reaffirmation of who I was and who I strived to be. Sometimes you gotta get lost to be able to find yourself. Couldn't agree more.

Much respect and thanks to Mr. Cranston for sharing this with us, but I disagree on the specifics while arguably agreeing with the spirit of his talk. Childhood is the time to be free. There is risk and there is a lot to learn in a short time, but I believe that 16 should not be the first time a child has been unattended or in a position to get lost. I read many testimonials in the comments about "I'm a teenager, my life is overwhelming and I really just want to sort myself out" and such. Much love and respect to these people also. Don't raise your child to be stunned the first time they are out in the wild. Expose children as young as you can to controlled, productive risks. Once you've given then the tools and the basic experience, let them alone so they can grow something of themselves and face themselves when no one is watching. Teenage years are a time of incredible turmoil in the life of many, and loading that with more by pushing back development until reality comes crashing down on them is not doing them any favours. Raise your children so that they are not just completely capable of leaving home and supporting themselves, but so that they've figured it out long ago and gotten over the initial sting of impatience to do so. Get them in touch with deeper values (theirs, not yours) that will serve as a foundation to them once they are floating out alone in the sea of us. Let them rebel young, when their whole world is smaller and rebellions and hurt feelings are easy to manage and evolve without comparatively long-lasting collateral damage.

I would say as just a minimum you NEED to leave your hometown or most lived in area. You could go like a state over or even a few cities (that you hopefully haven't been to prior). I agree with this so damn much. It's weird I kinda did that on accident though.

You're absolutely right! The biggest regret of my late teens/twenties is that I didn't travel. I live in a developing country but back then our economy/exchange rates weren't as bad as they are now. BUT in my 30s now I did move from my home town across the country two years ago and... it is a different lifestyle, culture, world... Even a different language! I absolutely love it. Not everyone's experience will be the same but I truly encourage people to at least try, as soon as they can, to make even the smallest moves happen. It changes your perspective. And if you want to go back home you'll have the kind of maturity that you might never have gained had you never left. Good luck to everyone out there still figuring out what you want to do 🍀🤞🏽

I heard a speech on the radio, and I can't remember who said it, but in short it was something like; if you don't (yet) have a career, a spouse, children or family reasons to stay at home, then you are ready to take a walk. I did it, and am so glad I did when I had the chance. I remember sitting on the roof of a bus, going across a plain, towards the looming middle Himalayas, and in Kerala, I had a group of wonderful new friends who I hadn't known two months before. Many frustrations too, but you never know what you can do until you have done it. If you can do it, because the chance will probably not come again.
