These Bryan Lee O’Malley episodes talking X-Men are making all my dreams come true

I still have those issues. In regards to the awful plastic foil covers, Marvel collected each AoA mini with foiled versions of their first issue covers right after they went back to the regular series. And man, how I LOVED copying that panel of Husk corroding Colossus, back in the day. Lots of texture lessons there. Also, this is where Skin goes from melting E.T. to sharp-nosed imp. As you noted in the GenX #1 video, you can see how Bachalo evolved the character over time, Angelo's nose was supposed to be just part of a disguise or something, and I guess it just stuck. Thanks for having Bryan Lee O'Malley have a chat about these, this was fun.

Oh hell yeah! Bachalo went hog wild, watched some Spirited Away and came up with the best Colossus/'Cat team. So good!

This nihilistic take on the heels of Gen X #4’s final page - Jubilee 4th wall break for a grid of sequential panels as she read a sheet of next issue editor notes like “blah blah… death of Xavier? Hmph that’s bad.” - then my takeaway here was cool freaky kids fight to survive hell on earth with snark and amped up powers, now cooler and freakier. I remember being SO MAD at Colossus, thinking Banshee would never. Such a gut punch.

Dear Lord! MY FIRST LOVE!!!!! THANK YOU KAYFABERS! 5:26 X Men Prime....Bryan Hitch was a bummer to me ...for me. I wanted MAD, Cruze, Adam Kubert! The Wolverine Hama/ Andy Kubert Run is also very Epic! 4 Issues is very little time to tell a true story....some of it was cheesy, but I had real BALLZ and HEart! Issue 2 to 4 is where the REAL GOLD of GENERATION NEXT IS!

Age of Apocalypse came out at the height of my Xmen comic fandom. So glad to see you guys doing a video on this comic.

The backstory for COLOSSUS in AOA was that he took on so many shells and shrapnel during hundreds of firefights, that when his mutant metal skin is manifested there are pieces of it that are “simply no longer there”. That is supposed to be the explanation for the mask, sling ,and padding present in his AOA uniform.

I think some of the darker inking on close ups look like gouges or deeper sunken areas like coils of muscle instead of the smooth metal bands, and when his mask is off the top of his head seems dented.

Always interesting hearing how the AOA titles first read mid-teen years. I went from the animated X-Men to comics at 9, maybe 3 issues before Phalanx Covenant set up Gen X and 616 Blink sacrificed herself to save the future team. Then Bachalo’s designs for Jono and Penance hooked me.

The ending of issue 4 where Collossus was unable to save his students was super bleak. Still found it very dark after a recent re-read. To me, the X-books after AOA felt very different to the books pre-AOA. Also, my tastes were changing rapidly, so like Brian, I ended up quitting the x-books not long after that.

It was bleak....but Colossus crouching at that door....had something very ballsy!

these age of apocalypse books (specifically the bachalos and madureiras) have always been some of my faves. I'm happy to see them get a little shine & critique. I'm, gonna have to pull these out and read them again as a grown up.

My favorite series from the Age Of Apocalypse, in my country American comics where rare and expensive until Forum from Spain started to edit this and while still a luxury for a 11 year old kid, way more affordable... I copied so many panels from this issue waiting for the next one.

These have been great. Love Scott Pilgrim. Please do more Joe Mad. He was my jam when I was in high school and first couple years of college.

I think this story arc was the best of age of apocalypse the way it ends with the look on colossus face left me dumbstruck

That pose is from ABC warriors I think? Or Sam Keith in the Wolverine v Cyber storyline ...

Dark? Violent? I have no doubt once you get to the end of the fourth issue, everything will work out? Colossus surely wouldn't abandoned.... :)

Age Of Apocalypse was the last X-MEN event that I was paying close attention to in terms of consistency in the 90s. I liked this story. But by the following year, Sandman and Preacher would begin to pull me away from that world.
