In this adobe premiere color grading tutorial I go over the secret to color grading by using the color match tool in premiere pro. This tool allows you to take any color color grade from your favorite videos and apply it to your footage. I also go over my full color grading process and apply film grain look as well as bloom to your footage.

hey. old guy video director here, learning AE from Bryan. i used to struggle with this, here's what i've learned so far so you don't suffer years of trial and error like I did: 0. LIGHTING IS KEY. before you even think of color grading, remember that good lighting is the difference between a great video and a bad one. consider investing in just lighting courses and some equipment to really level up. 1. shoot with proper white balance and exposure. underexposed/overexposed shots and purple/blue/green skin tones make your work look cheap. stop doing that. *(the only time your skies should be overexposed is when you want to do an easy sky replacement with a luma key) **(if you're still confused, the best way to know for sure if you're doing something right or not, is to to learn how to read all of your scopes and meters in your camera and in your editing program) 2. related to 1, understand how your camera behaves, especially with skin tones. also understand that your camera and lenses may change the look of your shot. remember to keep your F stop consistent between shots and only change it when you absolutely need to. 3. Skin tones and black points MATTER. after balancing your shots, your skin tones must make sense with the lighting/environment of the shot, as well as the overall vibe of the shot. If your shot looks dark and gloomy while the song is upbeat and happy, that's a no go. make it make sense. 3. (continued) BLACK POINTS must actually look black. if your blacks look purple or some other weird color, you have to fix it until it looks like it passes for black. in Premiere, you can do this by adding the opposite color in the m i d t o n e s color wheel on the Lumetri Tab. (There are better ways to do this, but that involves learning Resolve and other 3rd party software. This is good enough for premiere users) 4. find the proper conversion LUT for your specific camera and used it as the last part of your grading process, before your look/creative LUT this might sound confusing, but you're going to want to add the conversion LUT first during the edit, but leave it towards the end of your color grading process to preserve the detail of your shot. in a PREMIERE PRO or adjustment layer style process, it could look like this: [adj layer BORDER or BLACK BARS if that's what you like] [adj layer CONVERSION LUT] [adj layer CREATIVE LUT at 20% opacity maybe] [possibly overlays and transitions] [color & exposure correction directly on footage, denoise added first if necessary.] 4. (continued) conversion LUTs are usually never used by beginner and even intermediate rap video directors, but they're essential to the process. learn about them and start using them. There are some good free ones and good paid ones. there's not a lot to them. all they do is get your footage looking half way there so you don't have to guess too hard about what to do next. The conversion will allow you to see your true exposure and white balance so you can make adjustments during your color correction, BEFORE you start grading. *(many creative LUTs are actually build from footage with their conversion applied. so just pay attention to what your favorite LUTs actually do) 5. you don't need to add an S curve or heavy contrast to every shot. sometimes subtle is better. the same goes for adding too much saturation and vibrance/color boost. 6. use a lot of references. use TV shows, movies and high budget music videos to guide your taste. it's important to develop an understanding of what's high end, what's just okay and what's actually really bad and should never do. LASTLY, when you're overbooked because business is good, don't be afraid to outsource and build with a talented Colorist. it's their job to know this 1 skill. All the while, you can focus on growing your business.
