What Bryant didn't know according to Letterman on Howard Cosell's show, was that the Today's show's producer was in on it. Letterman didn't need to apologize because of that. I don't know but Dave is very persuasive.

The Today Show producer Steve Friedman contacted Letterman's producer Robert Morton and asked that Letterman interrupt the Today Show filming with something wacky.. Gumbel was angry at the wrong person.

I wonder if all those people that think Letterman interrupting the Today Show was hilarious would think so if they had a major TV program in progress and were rudely interrupted by some jerk hungry for attention at all cost. I'm pretty sure if a similar thing had happened to Dave while taping Late Night, he'd be livid himself.

Wrong! It wasn't a bad idea. It was absolutely freaking hilarious. I was almost rolling on the floor. So funny I have remembered that episode almost word for word 30 years later. Bryant Gumbel thought he was being made to look foolish and he didn't like it.
