Very cool 16 year old tutorial. Just started working in Bryce 7 and I found this helpful. Thank you!

The program is called Bryce. DAZ latest version is 6.1, but you haft to pay for that. If you want Bryce for free get version 5.5. You can get 5.5 on CNET. Just search for it, and you should find it. Bryce is a program made by DAZ 3D, and is used to make 3D landscaping easier to do.

This is excellent. I need to make various landscape projected backdrops for a theatrical production, including some fairly specific forest scenes and this will get me off to a good start. Thanks.

The first time I read about Bryce was in a demo CD for MDK back in 97, I never used the program as all in my mind was playing the game that came with it.

I have Bryce 7.0 PLE that i downloaded for free, It appears to have alot you can do (compared to other free software that have half the features disabled). But what is the difference between the free version and the $29 or the professional version? I'm pretty new to this, but I'm just wondering how much more i could do if I chose to purchase the other versions.

Bryce and Vue are designed for a similar application but it's really hard to compare them. Vue tends to be far less stable and takes a ton of resources and seems to render faster at a given quality level. Bryce overall has more tools like layers and so on, but it's many times more complicated to use. Bryce is far easier to use and learn, gives great results if tweaked properly but can be a little finicky at times. I believe Vue costs more also. This sounds lame but I'd say try both.

I have been trying to emulate your forest but I have two problems. I have a plain then two mountains in the background, which is OK, however, I have two large black rectangular shadows on the plain, which I cannot get rid of, what am I doing wrong here? The other thing is where you initially put in the trunks of the trees using the white circular dot, I cannot seem to get that right. Could you explain that aspect of it in more detail. Thank you Ray

You know, I'm not that familiar with Maya yet. You could create the models in Bryce and export them to use in Maya -- at least I assume so. :) I saw it on daz3d[dot]com -- for $99 here: tinyurl[dot]com/2ljhm5

I used a very early version of this software when I was about 12 years old. Bryce is frustrating most of the time. With Bryce sky, terrain and sea can me made easliy but other than that it's a quite weak software compared to other 3D softwares in the market. I wouldn't recommend it anyone to use Bryce. If you can afford use Maya or 3ds Max. If you don't have any money to spend on 3D software use Blender. Blender is free and as powerful as Autodesk's softwares.
