I also really loved this episode. I interpreted Fletcher faking the injury not to fool his brother in the long run, but to allow him to step up as the hero older brother that Fletcher has always seen him as. And this also ends up giving him a genuine welcome into the modded friend group.

The original short story was quite sad. The non modded brother felt he was being condescended on and this drove an even deeper wedge between the brothers. In the end the modded brother hardened his heart against the elder brother and stopped seeking his validation.

The animation style was unique, the entire idea of a new world where people are modded to preform beyond normal human capabilities is awesome. The fact that they can move so quickly and do these badass things is dope. But it’s the aesthetic of the episode that really draws me in, the whole dark and “cyber gothic” vibe it has with the character designs being more punk rock and rebellious looking, as well as the friendship aspect of the story and the way they seem to connect and interact with eachother.

At the end, when Extro saw how Fletcher was jumping, he made us realize at the same time what just happened. It's not so subtle if you were paying attention but it's a beautiful scene if you were immersed in the story. In the same breath, the story explores human potential and how we can overcome any challenges with the right goals. And the whales! The animation! The dialogue! The sound track! The most stunning show I've seen in a while! Speechless

Very interesting video. I’ve never actually read the source material but I had such a different take away from the ending in the show. I thought that the younger brother faked his injury during the race in the hopes that his older brother would try to help him and then die in the process. The entire episode is so dark and dreary that I was primed to think that there was a more sinister side to the ending. Especially since the older brother is displayed as such a burden to the family.

to clarify about 'oxo of the jaw implant', in the short story there's actually 2 oxo's. the regular one that we also see in the animated short, and the other oxo, oxo-of-the-jaw-implant. the other oxo is replaced by the bug eyed girl in the short, named pricilla or something. you can catch it in the subtitles during the final alleyway scene i think, but she's never explicitly named in conversation.

I don't understand how it is confirmed? Through visual communication they don't imply ANY FAKED INJURY in there frames. Much to the contrary, they explicitly draw the viewer in to see that Fletch's fall was accidental. I think this topic is a waist of breath and clearly communicated to be as seen on frame. This was a life or death risk which, as his brother joined him spontaneously, had little to no chance of being preconceived. It just falls flat. The more important aspect is that the brother MAY WONDER if his brother was so careless, if he is surrounded by people that would let him die ("you're on your own, Fletch"), and if this experience sparks an interest for Sedgewick to be modified. Everybody wants to pretend he FELL ON PURPOSE which goes against all foretelling and visualisation. I put my money on the more obvious conclusion; THIS WAS TRULLY AN ACCIDENT.

That being said, I don't doubt that Fletch could have started walking or running on his own earlier than shown, due to the modifications, but he was stunned unexpectedly and in the visual language of events don't show any indication that it was not genuine. His quick recovery is due to the mods..., and seem to me like it is meant to further show how the Extro's efforts still won't make him one of them. Regardless of the graphic novel, this short film only caters insight to those who know the printed version.

sadly we dont know. They are coming from earth though, where being modded might not have been the norm. Also it has been suggested somewhere that you coud propbably only get modded at birth. The older brother was born on earth (not modded), the younger was born in a place where modding was the norm

He was born in a “vat” or something probably representing maybe a surrogate /donor birth maybe the father became sterile from all the work in the factory and they used a sperm donor, for example , of someone of different race hence making the baby “modded” from birth. It’s seems like a well thought out work so I think it’s worth analysing. Would the parents buy expensive upgrades for the kid and not the other . It has to be a birth thing (or a representation of one) IMO. why else would they leave the older son out. It’s not mentioned that it was medical or anything it really comes across as more of a “don’t get a choice” thing that’s why big bro never comes across jealous. Inferior , yes. but I don’t think he feels like he got left out at Xmas or has to eat scraps of food. It’s just how things worked out. Genetics
