fair warning, the text (both the script and the editing) is sloppy at best, especially kunikida, who i am now hc-ing as thinking way too fast for anyone else to comprehend because my guy has just too many thoughts and opinions on a small, quick portion of the video and at this point idek how to make his thoughts readable. so. be prepared to have to replay some scenes and pause to read. sorry!!! also, apologies for any ooc stuff. i’d love to be super confident about my abilities to characterize them but yk,,, ps. im also sorry for taking so long to do this. enjoy?

Something I like about Dazai is the fact that he goes out of his way to be a beacon of hope for atsushi. Even with his behavior, his morally grey actions and the way that he treats others around him, atsushi is someone that he treats nearly the best out of everyone because he doesn’t want the guy to become like him. He self-censors, he continuously does whatever he can to be a beacon of hope and motivation for Atsushi which shows in the anime with how atsushi correlates him to positive encouragement and the headmaster to negative degradation. Jus a little thing I find interesting when it comes to the complex character that is Osamu Dazai lmao

i wasn't trying to put down dazai as a completely "bad" character!! he's complex and does actually try his best to be good for atsushi. that doesn't necessarily mean it works out in some situations. a lot of the videos reacted to were a way for me to vent my frustrations about dazai apologists who don't understand he had done quite a lot of stuff wrong. then, due to a lot of commenters, i put them in a reaction video. yes, they paint him in a more negative light, but despite that, no one in the video actually fully agrees with the shit i talked about him in them. kunikida understands it may not reflect how things actually happened (due to it being out of atsushis pov) and recognizes that he can't judge dazai since he said some mean shit too!! sorry for the rant, there was another dazai- morality-related comment thread and im already sick of defending my pov on dazai as a character.

a lot of bsd characters are morally gray, but i still somehow sympathize with them and even like them. its like, i cant really blame them for being that way? a lot of bsd characters grew up in toxic or horrible environments or just went through a lotta stuff. i dont believe that this justifies their behavior, but i think it serves as an explanation. if you were exposed to that much violence and abuse, i genuinely dont think you could turn out to be this normal person. the abused become the abuser

YEAH I REMEMBER THAT!! god ilysm for commenting this because im having several conversations with dazai lovers and having to defend my opinions is getting repetitive. i tried making dazai act canon-ish without giving away the fact that i dont like him but NOO lets be picky about the videos reacted to despite the fact FOUR out of ten videos were slandering him, one of which was brief slander and included equally small kunikida slander as well. im sorry for not liking a character and showing how some actions may leave the atsushi feeling bitter. 5:30 people!! kunikida realizes this may not be how dazai acted, but just how atsushi saw the interaction from his emotionally drained (after hearing abt headmasters death as well) point of view!!!!

Dazai is a morally grey character. True enough, he does go through development, but slapping someone (Atsushi) out of an a panic attack is just...no. I totally get what he was going for though. With how Dazai acts, he's the type of person to intentionally or unintentionally manipulate somebody for a small (maybe big) gain, but not for evil.

this video has my own bias towards characters since that's simply how creating works. I don't like dazai for a lot of reasons, and I do get the fact he has both saved and helped atsushi, I just don't think he is a good influence on his mindset and some of his actions can actually hurt atsushi. Again, those are just my opinions, and I understand not everyone dislikes dazai as I do!!

Especially when he made a little girl (I forgot her name. The one with the fucked up teddy.) suffer, but didn't really care. Yes, Dazai himself was suffering and could've damn well projected, but it doesn't make it any more right. I'm pretty sure he outright says he should've killed her or something. Obviously, the girl was trying to kill his friends, but that scene reminds people that he's not an angel people tend to make him up to be. Just because he wants to change for the better doesn't erase his past. Hell, Dazai knows that himself. The akutagawa situation. We know it was abuse, but Dazai calls it “training.” With all the degradation and threatening to kill him next time, there's no way Dazai WASN'T projecting a bit on what he experienced. Apologizing isn't something that comes naturally for him. In fact, he's the type of person to try and turn the situation around, talk about something else, or completely throw responsibility out the window (in certain situations). So, when Dazai doesn't act like this “goofy-radiating-mischievous” guy and actually doesn't something that's questionable or isn't very “good guy” like, then you should know he isn't the most morally available guy. He's not heartless, but he's certainly... something when he wants to be.
