Today I am demonstrating my PDP-11/73 running BSD Unix. I have a teletype model 33 ASR attached, and run the banner command.

I had sole access to a PDP 11/45 as an undergrad in 1974-5. Only problem was that it was from 12:00 AM to 8;00 AM. Still my favorite computer experience of all time. Thanks for the memories!.

In 1980 20 y/o me helped port bsd to a PDP-11/23 at UCLA. The challenge was that the /23 didn't have separate I&D, so each process could only address 64k of memory at a time. Several of the bsd programs (for example "vi") needed more than 32k of instruction space. The link-editor (ld) and kernel were modded to allow processes to remap 8k chunks of address space on the fly when calling or returning from code. It felt like magic.

I got my computer science degree learning Cobol, Fortran, Basic, Advanced Basic, machine assy and ROG on PDP-1170s with a Hazeltine 1500 monitor... What a stroll down the best years of memory lane. Thank you sir.

Absolutely fascinating! Thanks for sharing. As a digital sojourner growing up in the 80s I have recently become interested in the computing of my youth.

My first computer was a DEC PDP-8 in Jr. HS summer school between 7th and 8th grade in 1973. We used an EDUCOMP EDU300 msrk sense card reader to write programs at home on 40 col cards with a #2 pencil and run the card stack the next day. It was easy to correct our programs with an eraser before loading them again. The following Summer we had a PDP-11/35 with a room full of ASR-33 teletypes. Imagine a dozen students all printing banners, biorhythms, and playing SuperStarTrek at the same time on those Teletypes. It was a LOUD classroom! The High School student in the computer room would play music on an A.M. radio next to the CPU by running programs with loops. That was the start of my I.T. and Engineering career. I’ve seen computers change a lot in the past 50 years.

Brought me back to grade school when I used the 33 connected via acoustic coupler to a HP timeshare system. The sound of the keypresses and the printing sounds jogged the memory. Awesome video!

Oh nice! We had an 11/73 at college in the 1980s... ours ran RSTS/E and had VT100s. My discovery of Unix would be a few years later down the line, once my DEC friends at work were all on VAX and VMS. Woah! You've got a CI-3500 too! We had a few of those at work in the late 1980s

I actually did use a PDP-11/70 in college, the ancestor of your 73. I was using it via a networked terminal, through.

Nice to see old iron running. I remember programming with the Model 33. I started Unix on 11/45 machines with Version 6. Programming using "ed" was a very different experience!

I used to use teletypes to run diagnostic tests in Data General Nova 1200 and similar machines at my summer job at Minicomputer Exchange in Sunnyvale CA back in the late 70s. I could load the test program into core memory on one machine, turn off power, move the memory board to another machine, power up, and run from the front panel switches on the new machine. Let it run overnight and the teletype would log passes and errors.

Brings back memories. My first CS course used a timeshared PDP-11 running UNIX (1975). Later I used an even older PDP10. I had a lot of help from a consultant who could touch-type TECO commands.

Takes me back to my university days. Supposedly their PDP-11 cost as much as a house.

Great video! I don’t know if this version of BSD has it, but many early Unix systems would recognize a username in all upper case and go into a special I/O mode where uppercase input is mapped to lowercase letters, and vice versa. I’ve only successfully tested this on a version of AIX from the 90s (on an Apple Network Server).

Hrmmm, I don't think my PiDP-11 has that screensaver. I'll have to tinker and see. SiMH got fragmented and I lost track of where things are.
