It's amazing that Zeppelins haven't found a modern application, the idea of flight at near zero energy cost should have great appeal in the age of energy consciousness.

it's not near zero energy to go anywhere. however, if you store the fuel as gas at 1 atm. pressure, then you can store a lot of fuel and said fuel can be cheap. but anyhow for transatlantic it's not cheaper in energy than a 737 for example, graf zeppelin carried only 24 people. maybe if you could have solar or something and weren't in a hurry, but there's a minimum energy burn to overcome the winds I suppose.

@@lasskinn474 Sailboats are zero energy, if you only plan on riding the wind then a Zeppelin could do the same, as long as you want to go where the wind takes you.

@@budthecyborg4575 in the air it's a little different to sailboats, in that you lack control more than if you have water to push against. it's just a balloon then. not very practical, not even for moving cargo short distances by pulling the thing with a cable. for long distances to move a large amount of cargo the size becomes a real problem too. graf zeppelin was twice the length of a c5 but c5 carries almost 10x the cargo. to match a c5 the zeppelin would start to be something like more than a kilometer in length and to match a cargo boat the zeppelin would be as big as a city and just go where the wind takes it.. possibly north pole. the amount of fuel graf zeppelin carried was enormous if calculated in kilos compared to using a heavier than air aircraft to move the same amount of cargo, if the fuel is cheap or practically free it can make some sense in some routes, if co2 is of no concern. not so sure anyone would go for nuclear zeppelins, but there again why not a nuclear plane instead. with an EV zeppelin the math just wouldn't work out with the batteries for any cargo duty. there are some uses for balloons for spying and such though.

I really enjoy such detailed history about these bombers, thank you! BTW, this is portrayed in the 1930 film, Hells Angels at 44 : 00 into the film.

VERY interesting! We Americans tried one out in the 20's or 30's, but it was not a successful as the German one.

No, that’s from the notes of the guy who designed it. And it’s the same guy who tested it first, so he must have been confident enough.

Ironically the Germans bombed Warsaw (deliberately targeting Jewish areas btw) and Rotterdam prior to the U.K. bombing German cities. Oh the irony.
