At this event, Katriel Schory will be honoured with a Berlinale Camera. Festival director Dieter Kosslick is on hand to honour Schory for his lifetime achievements as a producer and the director of the Israel Film Fund. Accepting the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Venice Film Festival for Foxtrot, the film’s director, Samuel Maoz, dedicated his award to Katriel Schory. Since 1999, Schory has been a driving force behind Israel’s cinematic renaissance, often squaring off against a complicated political environment. In Maoz’s words, he “stands like this lion and protects the freedom of speech and expression and the purity of art.” Foxtrot describes the endless traumatic circle of victimhood that plagues the Israeli identity. The film has been shortlisted for the Oscars, yet controversially received in the country. In an in-depth conversation, Schory and Maoz trace the evolution of the project and the role of cinema as an instrument of democracy.
