I just hope that entire culture of Metaverse and NFTs will just collapse under its own bulk, just because of it’s terrible influence on society and creativity and such. It was just an accident waiting to happen.

Yoooooo I was looking forward to this! I’m pretty much in the same boat, except swap This Binary Universe with These Hopeful Machines, and Everything You’re Searching For with A Song Across Wires, and you have mine! Also hi mate! I appreciate the shoutout for the videos you mentioned at the beginning that you participated in! That means a lot! Also also, I’ll be making more of those megacollab style videos like the BT series so stay tuned! Got a pretty popular artist that’s pretty known on this channel in consideration so that’s cool!

I knew this video would come. This Binary Universe is without question a masterpiece. That album is completely flawless to me with no bad track on there and Good Morning Kaia is a heartfelt tribute to BT’s then baby daughter that got me right in the heart and resonated with me almost immediately. So therefore, TBU is my favorite BT album and the majority of his other albums are awesome.

i've been excited for this lol your top 100 is what got me into other electronic genres that weren't as modern as trance or dubstep. I discovered deadmau5 in 2012 and he was the only electronic artist i listened to besides Daft Punk, The Checmical Brothers, Skrillex (only before Recess came out) and maybe Feed Me. Surprisingly I also had way too many repeat listens on the song "Kalimba" by Mr. Scruff, even before all of that because it came with my my very first mini laptop for free. Before watching your video, I didn't even think I was gonna like Aphex Twin but a few months later 85-92 quickly became one of my top 3 albums and it's still there as far as I'm concerned. But really, what changed my mind was when I saw These Hopeful Machines at number 9 on your list, being very interested in it's trance sound that was sampled in the video (The Emergency). But then I saw the other BT album that appeared at number 2 and that's what had me excited when you said #9 wasn't even the highest ranked album. What grabbed my interest was the marimba from "The Internal Locus" because as a percussionist, that might be my favorite instrument sound (don't quote me on that). After one listen of "All That Makes Us Human Continues" I was basically converted. The entire rest of the album grew on me and convinced me that it's the one album that is the most up my alley. Just to put it into perspective, if it weren't for your praise on BT, I wouldn't be a fan of electronic music.

1. This Binary Universe (who the fuck can put anything else in this slot?) 2. These Hopeful Machines (if TBU wasn't a singular timeless masterpiece then this would be #1 because I feel like this is the very best mix of all of BT's styles that he ever put out. Trance, house, rock, pop and so on. It's both the best introduction to his work and his most complete artistic statement. Also - my favourite album of all time). 3. Movement in Still Life (his most cohesive and complete statement at the original peak of his fame. Trance ruled the world in 1999, but the album really showed what he could do outside those genres too, while keeping a very consistent sound throughout). 4. If the Stars Are Eternal (his best abstract album next to TBU, which I heard before that one, and a far better and more consistent offering than the other three such albums he did. A better blend of beats and ambience). 5. ESCM (in 1997 he was really starting to light up. This is when his releases moved from being just a breakout artist with a unique sound into true musicianship and by God does it show) 6. _ (the third ranking of his abstract albums. The three standouts more than make up for the rest of it. 7. Emotional Technology (I was scared of what people said about this album for a long time before I heard it and it was cringe at first. But goddammit it's just so FUN. What a beautiful fucking stylistic roller coaster ride with maximum stutter edit. Tonally inconsistent poppy BT is my favourite BT, and this album serves as a fitting preview of what THM later perfected). 8. The Lost Art of Longing (it's new so I don't have as much nostalgia, but this is the culmination of his current trance 2.0 sound and is definitely his most technically accomplished work. Musically it's him reclaiming his old trance throne with a perfect update, but as consistent as this is I miss his rock tracks. The War is my favourite cut for this reason. And in terms of emotion it doesn't even come close to THM). 9. Ima (the structuring really is weird; I never listen to this as an album. When he started out I think he was doing that thing where he just put some of his pre-existing tracks together into a single package. It's a compilation of his earliest work in trance, but that work changed the genre, and as dated as it is you can tell how creative it was for its time). 10. A Song Across Wires (this one is flawed and I too was disappointed, but this was also a lesson in avoiding his word of mouth reputation when evaluating his music. All of the 9+ minute tracks are his trademark "epic journey" trance with a modern flair, and it's probably one of the best things to have come out of the 2013-era EDM boom. Sucks that the shorter tracks don't even come close to the rest, although I do enjoy the glitchiness of Vervoeren and the shamelessness of Letting Go. It's just a really fun party record, and I first saw him live when he was touring this so I should know). 11. Morceau Subrosa (his best pure ambient work. It's basically just a demo of him doing granular synthesis and timestretching for 47 minutes, but because of that it flows perfectly start to finish. 12. Everything You're Searching for (this album was a big let down because I expected this to be the beats-heavy version of the release pair. But only three tracks have beats; the rest is a film score experiment. If the whole album was like those three then I'd rank it a hell of a lot higher). 13. Between Here and You (it's an ambient album where he's doing a whole bunch of different sound design and synthesis things. It's pretty music. The end).

A Song Across Wires and These Hopeful Machines are my top 2. I have probably listened to these the most. I think the magic of ASAW for me is that it plays so well from start to finish in the CD version. I also really like TLAOL a lot more than most people seem to. No matter what though, BT's music always makes me feel something. It's just the highs and lows of THM and ASAW are so well placed and paced when listening to those albums as a whole, they feel like a journey. ETA: For the record, I'm 42 years old, and each decade of his music holds a different sense of nostalgia for me. It's almost all proven to be timeless to me.

At the time of writing this comment, I just recently got BT’s first three albums on CD with one of my Amazon vouchers! All of them are in my top three, currently with Ima and ESCM being tied for first place (sometimes I think Ima is better than ESCM, but that can change quickly depending on my mood). As for his other albums, I don’t really like his more modern stuff that much, but if I had to choose my favourite from that period, These Hopeful Machines definitely wins it all for me!

Great list! Based on his albums that I’ve listened to I would say I agree with most of it. I find This Binary Universe to be the most interesting of his albums. I also love these hopeful machines and if the stars are eternal though. If the stars are eternal is the album I end up listening to the most.

You might be able to get away with throwing that custom mix of Movement in Still Life on like another youtube channel or as like a privated video on a seperate youtube channel or something that you supply the link from somewhere else or something... because I really wanna hear that mix! (also that's a lot of something) I especially wanna hear it because your Drift Series re-sequencing is the main way I listen to THAT album, and I basically have the exact same issues that you have with Movement In Still Life lol Fantastic video btw... I'll even take like me sending my email address to you and you sending it lol

Also on a similar and random note, that reminds me of how I personally resequenced Metallica's Load & Reload into a proper double album by cutting a bunch of the tracks (9 I think?), and then reorganizing them so it's paced like a story-driven concept album... Also adding the proper 10+ minute version of The Outlaw Torn which needs to be heard (and is also the album's title track in my version)

IMA and ESCM are joint number one for me. It is hard to understate just how much of an impact they had on the development of progressive and trance movements. IMA especially so. There is a reason BT was summoned to the UK at the time for these albums, although a lot is owed to the Detroit tech and US garage house scene it is Europe where trance and progressive really started to develop and BT was a pioneer in advancing the art form. That is not to say he was the only one creating highly detailed, complex works (it is worth noting that nothing about detail and complexity alone makes things good), but he is one of the few that did it consistently well. I struggle to believe there isn't a trance producer alive that would not like to have been the one to have composed and recorded Flaming June. Around the time the mainstream was being fed Robert Miles and Sash (yes Sash, I am not referring to DJ/Producer Sasha), yet if you dug a little deeper you would find artists like BT. There again I might be talking nonsense and be heavily biased, if I am, then I am not the only one, clearly Paul Oakenfold thought alike too.

14. Everything you're searching for is on the other side of fear (sorry but this is just more straight ambient music from him, definitely not "TBU 4". at least the boolean query and orthogonal are cool) 13. Emotional technology (commercial and not something I'll ever want to return to again. superfabulous is a complete disaster and so is circles. at least The force of gravity and Communicate are both genuinely 8+/10 songs) 12. Morceau subrosa (background music) 11. between here and you (same thing, but I think I was more in the mood for it when I first heard it than morceau subrosa) 10. _ (weirdly paced album that I'll never want to return to as a whole again, however the three 12+ minute structured tracks in the center are all really good) 9. Metaversal (if we don't count it's nft involvement, Metaversal is a perfectly fine synthwave album that's up to the standards of plenty of other artists but not quite bt) 8. A song across wires (idk why this isn't higher since I genuinely really like it but I guess the other 7 are better and it does have some easy-to-pick-out low points too) 7. Movement in still life (UK edition) (seriously just take out the first 4 tracks and maybe replace them with better ones or add in Never gonna come back down and Fibonacci sequence and this would be so much higher) 6. The lost art of longing (very consistent but the highs aren't especially great, however all the former lows grew on me) 5. If the stars are eternal (this would be a couple places lower if it weren't for the opening track) 4. ESCM (very good album but it doesn't flow as well as...) 3. Ima (kind of a toss-up for the 2nd place but this is still a great trance album that flows amazingly well and every track is at least decent) 2. These hopeful machines (fantastic, even all the rock songs are great, though always feels a bit like filler) 1. This binary universe (AKA one of the best albums ever made, if not the best)

“At number 12…” Nuovo Marcel Subrosa, probably… “I have Emotional Technology” NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 😭 One counterpoint: it’s the perfect album for the lay listener because of its pop sensibilities, and the production seems cleaner and less compressed than at least 2 of his other upbeat albums. I already defended it in its own video so I’ll stop 😅
