The "seek bloons" upgrade works on the tentacles, and that happens by the tentacles appearing farther away from the monkey, so with a big range they can appear quite far

No, the tentacle attack just works everywhere in the mermonkey's range. It just usually looks like it attacks from the base because the top path mermonkey's range is so small

Something to note here, for whatever reason the placement of the mermonkey was still able to hit bloons on the track with the abyss dwellers tentacles I'm guessing it's something akin to the tack being able to hit with all of it's tacks if placed close enough to the track. Here's an example. 4:20
