Thanks for the info., The local tech recommended an Arris system saying it worked better with the Comcast modem. So I will get that mesh system. Comcast Business customer service was of no help at all and tried to sell several additional services that didn't seem applicable to slow wifi issue.

The problem with most installers (myself included) is they do have the knowledge about products, but their company has strict orders for them not to recommend products. Main reason being is if there is an issue that arises, then that installer, the company included, gets blamed. Most ISPs have a bad rep already, so to add that would make things even worse. I try to recommend mesh WiFi every time, and I make sure that I say it’s my personal recommendation, not the company’s.

I live in a very rural area. Our one and only option is Century Link. No other available. Our “speed” is 12 mb, just recently upgraded from .7. (Dial up). We have a good sized two story with basement. When the tech installed the router, he put it on the second story in a middle bedroom. I now have a basement office that is getting less than 6 mb and it cuts out frequently We have Ethernet wired through quite a bit of the home, including very close to the basement office. From your video, I think I’m going to upgrade to mesh as there are a number of walls and floors I’ll need to go through wherever I put the router. Should I incur the expense of moving the router to the main floor from the second story, or just get the mesh and two auxiliary units? I guess the question is, does it matter if the router is in the middle and auxiliary ones at the extreme ends, or will it be as effective if they are router to auxiliary to auxiliary in series? Your video is extremely well done with no stupid music blaring in the background and very concise. Well explained without being redundant Thanks

This video was extremely helpful. My internet was very hit or miss around my home. I have a 3 level house and the modem was on the lower level. I saw your video and started looking into Mesh systems. Bought a TP-Link from Amazon in sale. Installed it now Wi-Fi coverage is insanely fast. I was getting 40 to 50 mbps download before the upgrade, and even that was shotty. After the mesh system upgrade now I am getting 140 mbps consistently all over my house on all levels. A real 180 degree difference, night and day.

I recently installed the Nexxt Vector 3600AC three unit mesh. Our house has concrete walls and the ISP router just covered 30% of the house. With two kids having online classes and two adults working from home, the traditional extenders didn’t make it . After installing the mesh, the whole house has great coverage and connection speeds are great. The only down side is that it uses outdated security protocol. Nexxt did promise to update to AES.

As a professional IT WiFi engineer , Xtenders = bad, MESH = only fair but easy for novices, true performance comes from proper placement of multiple AP's and proper configuration/installation. MESH is highly over-rated but an easy install alternative to a real connection.

I recently upgraded to ATT Fiber and the modem/router combo is great even with a 4000 sq ft house. Just 1 router. I used to have the Google mesh system (4 units total around the house) but disconnecting them all gives me much faster speed and coverage. ~300/350Mbps download and ~300/350Mbps upload speeds in the farthest distance from the one ATT modem/router. When I had the mesh system, it gave me slower speeds even though I was right next to it. I can't explain that part!

I've tried several Mesh systems and my conclusion is they're decent for small to medium spaces but don't do so well in 5000 sq ft or greater multi-level homes, despite their claims. In my opinion it's better to spend the money for a few strategically-placed wired data jacks and then connect simple cheap nodes in AP mode with wired connections back to the router.

I live out of town and the only internet I can get is using the ATT WiFi hot spot. I can usually get 75 on this for just the cost of the device renta, about $24 per month, as apposed to the long distance Windstream that I could get up to 12... but I never saw that and it was usually around 5 but often below 1...... So I have a 3800 sq ft, three level home. The signal has been a bit off lately. Three smart TVs, 4 iPhones, three macbook pros and a ipad pro plus two chromebooks. To increase the signal I installed a google mesh to the port on the ATT WiFi device/hotspot. Hey B, hoping you'll see this. I'm currently expecting to move at the end of the month with my family, and the new house requires a different internet solution than we currently have. For context, right now we have a 1Gbps package from our ISP who provided us with an Eero router. My parents have the router in their room so they're directly connected via ethernet. My brother, on the second floor, is connected wirelessly. I am on the third floor with a 50ft ethernet cable running through holes in the floor since the wi-fi signal, even with a range extender, was absolutely terrible(and my new desktop that I built last year doesn't even have wi-fi capability, I'd need an adapter for that.). At the new house we're moving into, the router will be in a more neutral area, the living room, which is on the floor below all three bedrooms, with my parents room being at the complete opposite end of the house from the router. Drilling holes in the floor at this house is not an option, and even if we did get permission to do so, you'd have at least three ethernet cables being snaked along the walls and ceilings, which doesn't look great. And while my brother and I could at least connect to wifi, being positioned directly above the router, my parents would likely get a terrible signal unless we invested in something like the Netgear Nighthawk AX11000, the new WiFi 6E model. And even then I have no idea what the signal strength for everyone would be with at least two televisions streaming 1080 or 4K content, three video games systems, four smartphones, two powerful gaming desktops, and two laptops and possibly other extra smart devices. So I've been considering the Netgear Orbi, specifically the newer Orbi AX6000 model, and I was wondering how feasible it would be to put one node in each bedroom regardless of proximity to one another. So one in my room, one in my brothers room right next to me, and another at the far end in my parents room. This would give each person their own node to connect to, wirelessly or via ethernet connection, but I wasn't sure if there would be problems with this, again, because at least two of them would be almost right next to each other, just with a wall separating the two rooms.

My number 1 tip for people wanting to install a 2 or 3 mesh wifi setup at their house is to call around electricians to get a dedicated CAT6 cable backhaul ran from wherever your cable modem and main AP is located to connect to the mesh units. If the AP's have to punch through walls to talk to one another, you're automatically sacrificing speed just for the backhaul communication so no matter how good your range is with the satellite AP's, you're starting off with a bandwidth handicap.

We recently switched from: * 200Mbps Spectrum with our trusty-but-old AirPort Extreme 802.11ac (I gather nowadays called “WiFi 5”), to * “1Gbps” Google Fiber and the two free “Nest” mesh routers that came with it. I’m finding the WiFi speed to be all over the map: Typically 500-650Mbps in line-of sight of the routers, but all-too-often dropping *_way down_* to below 100Mbps, occasionally as low as 20Mbps for short times. I’ve only done one wired hookup so far, and the speed was *_a lot_* more consistent. Fair chance I’ll switch back to our old AirPort Extremes!

We have one remote PC that doenst have wifi and is currently on a internet-over-power-cord type setup - and he's getting better speed since we upgraded the internet service, but still much lower than a laptop over the wifi downstairs. Slightly nervous about getting the Orbi set up with Verizon - like not sure if its better to unplug the modem (which is in my attached shed), or call verizon . . . or if I need to plug the new router in to the old one or i can just plug it in to the jack the installer gave me when he was here? (I used to have the coax but now i have regular ethernet outlet). Hopefully i'll figure it out when it gets here!

Can I ditch my provider (Frontier) modem/router and exclusively use my mesh system? I had heard it was possible to disable the Provider router and possibly save on that router svc fee, but the Provider installer wouldn’t touch my ‘3rd party’ routers and then when cable guy came by (DirecTV), he tapped the Genie parent box to the Provider modem/router and so now I’m afraid to mess with it.

I have Xfinity internet and I bought a 6 mesh system from them, so I complained about my Wifi speed and a Tech told me, that the mesh system is for distance only and not for speed. So they gave me newer router modem combo so i had the set up all of my devices that can only use the 2.4gz. Here's my problem or what I think it may be ,the old router modem had the 2 channel Wifi 2.4 and 5g, I have the 1g service. Now what they didn't tell me was that the 2.4g and 5g are now combined and instead of 2 wifi channels. so now I only have to use the one password instead of two? By the way I live in a 4 bedroom 2000q.ft. home. So I unplugged all of the mesh systems and now I'm getting about 200g to 275g speeds using the 5g. Well by now I wasn't really happy with my wifi speeds so I purchased an Zen-booster extender, after hooking everything up..the Wifi speeds on the extender were ever slower. I then went back to square one and my wifi speeds are back to where they were 225 to 280 speeds, just using my own newwork..........what a waste of money, I feel like I got scammed by Xfinity and MI Tech.

When I talked with an AT&T tech, they recommended mesh Wifi, but that I wouldn’t be able to get rid of their main router. Is this legit or are they just trying to get me to keep paying for their router? Using fiber, but have poor coverage.

Hi great vid! I recently moved into a 1700 sq ft apt and transferred my AT&T service here. When transferring service the tech installed a newer BGW320 router/modem combo in my upstairs closet. I asked him if it would be better place somewhere in the open for faster a connection? He said the newer modem doesn't need to be out in the open. Do you know if there's any truth to that? Also, he didn't use the 5ghz plug for the fiber jack. He said that it wouldn't speed anything up. Is he being honest or maybe doesn't know. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
@BTheInstaller
@BTheInstaller 3 жыл бұрын
Well if you aren't getting high speeds in all corners of your apt, then I would move to better it with the tips here. There is always loss of "some" signal strength if buried in a closet. You will always get more signal quality if two or more units are used as one can't cover the same area. So all of these tips still stand true.
