The thing that I love most about this song is how each member interprets their role. Not only the use of tear (tears you cry), tear (to tear apart), and fear, but the emotions they put into it are also slightly different. Namjoon sounds as if he upset, but he's known that the end was coming all along, and therefore isn't very surprised. He's accepted it. He uses tear (tears you cry) because instead of doing anything, he's accepted it and just wants to cry. Yoongi sounds as if he's trying to push himself away from the other person, feigning being alright, but he's still upset. He also sounds more angry and bitter than sad. He uses tear (to tear apart) because he's trying to separate himself and push away as quickly as he can, like ripping off a bandaid. Hoseok is the only one that seems like he wants the person or relationship back. He sounds desperate, as if he really doesn't want to let go. You can feel him reaching out. He uses fear because he's afraid of who he is and will be without the other person, and he doesn't want to be without them. This song is a masterpiece. Totally underrated.

I just watched "Break the Silence" Documentary Series. At the ending of one of the episodes, Yoongi said this song is about their disbandment plan in 2018. I'm glad that had overcome that hurdle and stayed together. I can't imagine how our life would be without them staying by our side.

It's both tear, as in a fallen tear and tear, as in tearing something apart. Namjoon (RM) raps about fallen tears from a broken relationship. Yoongi (Suga) raps about wanting the relationship to tear apart, he doesn't want lingering feelings that can happen with things ending neatly and then possible regret. Hoseok (J-Hope) raps about both meanings of tear but his part at the end is like the final moments of the relationship, he's done with it. Thanks for like :)

I've been around six months into the fandom, heard some 92 songs but I've been sleeping on this masterpiece!! This has to be one of their most hard hitting lyrics (and they have so many). The resentment over how things have turned out, the helplessness when it comes to fate, the anguish regarding the emotional trauma the person has undergone and the final stanza where they resignedly accept this parting but also acknowledge how some trauma from this incident will always remain and that the person will never forget it - it will always be his fear - all such complex emotions are portrayed beautifully. RM: His rap sounds intense but silent. Almost as if he's hanging on and he persists to stay but the situations presented in front of him is making him go in hopeless despair. He's also fast and hard hitting, like he's been wanting to say everything. Suga: His rap here is desperate, he sounds like he's gonna break down but he doesn't want to because he's too tired doing so. His rap is slow and relaxed, almost as if like he knows what's the end result but he kept holding onto something that was crumbling. J-Hope: His rap is a mixture of the two. Despair, desperation, surrendering, basically he's just "You and I know we can't do this anymore." His voice is just pure, raw emotion that keeps overflowing from all the suffering he has went through, and the attempts he made to save what he treasures the most, only to lose it. And that was his fear. This is my personal opinion while listening to their style of rapping, as well as their lyrics. EDIT: After watching break the silence ep 6, I can't help but to reflect more on this comment. At first I thought it was just to portray the expressions on the lyrics (which they had done beautifully), but now that we know about the history on this song, it just gives me pain listening to this- along with the observation I made. But we shouldn't cry. We should be glad BTS has passed that hurdle of disbanding. We should be glad they're still here. We should be glad they kept holding on for us.

namjoon's rap feels aggressive and more brutally honest. like he's stating everything in pure realization, completely bitter but with loads of frustration. he states forever isn't forever and he doesn't wanna listen to it, he was lulled into false sense of hope for too long and now he's frustrated, bitter and angry. yoongi seems more let down. oddly he sounds the least aggressive despite usually being extremely aggressive with his raps. he was sadly stating it, almost so sad that it felt like nothing to him to state those words. namjoon was passionate about his frustration. but i feel yoongi is the type of person when angry, not to explode on a person. he would just laugh in despair about it and walk off. he'd leave, but never move on. that's what his verse conveyed about the tear story. he'd let go just for the sake of it. just to not deal with the problem anymore. hoseok's verse displayed desperation. he was angry but desperate, regretful if anything. he's regretful he couldn't stop what happened. unlike the others, he doesn't want to face the reality of parting ways with a loved one. he regrets it all and wants to turn back time. namjoon is frustrated and wants to end everything, yoongi is disappointed and wants to just forget the problem and move on but hoseok doesn't. hoseok is regretful. it really shows their characters i personally think. hoseok is the type to be emotionally attached and never let go. yoongi is the type to want to just walk off with it unsolved. namjoon is the type of person to go ballistic over something he can't understand and can't accept.

My favorite song off the whole album, without question. RM sounds so incredible (as always!) and has such a great energy and speed about his rapping, so I don't know why on earth people are brushing by him. MIN YOONGI, oh my word - his singing voice is angelic and his flow is impeccable. His trademark emotional touch really shines in this song. Hoseok also sounds absolutely fantastic and his unique style and voice really shines here! He's so amazingly talented and his singing and rapping are top-notch. I also really love the powerful, sweeping orchestra in the background. It adds to the energy and emotion of the song. I'm so proud of all of them. I feel like Hobi's last verse hits diff after the Break the Silence episode. He's never been the type to easily say I love you or be completely explicit with his feelings verbally so it hurts to hear him just explode with emotion. It feels like he doesn't know what to do or what to say to stop what feels inevitable (at the time), his aggressive tone and harsh flow make sense now within that context its literally the breaking of a dam under pressure and the sudden onslaught of water. Rapline eloquently and poetically expressed the difficulty of that time for them and I wouldn't be surprised if the song itself was the turning point for OT7 to decide they would give it another shot. I'm so incredibly proud of these 7 men 💜 I love them with all of my purple heart 💜

This song makes me cry because of how deep it is and how much I understand the subtle varying in their perspectives/ emotions on each of their parts. Sugas first singing part was so-nonchalant despite what he was saying and to me it mirrored knowing there’s something wrong, feeling hopeless yet as a whole not caring anymore and feeling numb all at the same time and it’s so scary. Sometimes I feel hoseoks desperation and sometimes I feel Namjoon frustration. I love this song it’s such a masterpiece. I always liked it but I haven’t fallen in love with it until now when I most needed it.

So RM explained on Vlive that there were three ode words that each of them rapped about. He had the codeword tear (as in the salty bodily fluid), Suga had tear (as in tearing apart, ripping apart) and J-Hope had fear. I came here again after finding that out and now everything makes sense! If you listen carefully, you can even hear the different pronounciations of the two different 'tear' s in the chorus. Just thought someone would find it interesting!
