An explanation video would definitely help explain a LOT lol this video was also a kind of response to those who said they were becoming too ‘Westernized’ so this video has a LOT of traditional Korean elements like the instruments used, traditional clothing, and symbolism. BTS was formed by an underdog label that nearly went bankrupt at one point. The big 3 labels in South Korea, that produced all the major KPOP names, tried repeatedly to shut them down, from accusing them of buying their own songs, which was impossible, they could barely pay their bills, to false claims of plagiarism. Their success has been outside industry norms every step of the way. Out of necessity they bypassed the traditional routes and went directly to their fan base through social media. They had songs topping the Billboard charts when western stations weren't even giving them air play. They're not just super-talented, they have a work ethic that's on a par with champion athletes. BTS is the most successful global act in entertainment history. So, yea, they've got haters, not the least of which from within an industry that they've turned upside down. But they also have a staggeringly huge, rock-solid fan base that's downright terrifying to all the big labels and rightfully so. xCeleste has an awesome video about their hardships. IDOL is a song that addresses a million slurs in such a fun way and does it spectacularly. It has many symbols of their love for South Korea. Also, throughout the video we see things like RM playing with filters because of criticism about them using filters, we see the members multiplied because everyone says 7 is too many members, the Snow White sweater Suga wears is because someone accused him of being too pale and the hearts on V's shirt is because someone insulted a sweater he wore with a heart on it. JHope dancing next to the inflatable man was because someone said his dancing looked like that and the crazy, colorful backgrounds is because someone accused them of using green screens (the Fake Love video?--those are real sets). Check out DKDK's explanation video. It's a really good one.

Hokay.... so here are a few things you need to know about "Idol". BTS was catching a bunch of crap from other Korean artists/fans that they were becoming too "westernized" so BTS said.... okay... hold my Soju, and created a song/video jam PACKED with Korean cultural references: the colored streamers, the lions, the rabbit in the moon, even the drum beat in the background is a traditional drum beat used during community gatherings... and a TON more. They are also wearing modernized versions of traditional Hanbok during parts. In addition to all this, they embraced some of the shit their haters had said about them such as, Suga being super pale - hence he wears a Snow White sweater; J-Hope being lanky- hence he wears a Bugs Bunny sweater and dances in front of that yellow air thingy; V dresses like a grandpa - hence him wearing slacks and suspenders; RM using filters on lives - hence the cutsie snap-chat filters... and so on. Also Also... in the beginning of the MV you see them at a table with the sun rising and a ship on the left of the table and a globe on the right, and at the end of the MV, they are back at this table and the sun is setting... but it DOESN'T actually set. This indicates that BTS is GLOBAL! The sun LITERALLY never sets on BTS and their influence. :)

“Hold my soju” 😂🤣😂 so well explained. I adore the embracing what haters say outfits. They are absolutely the clap back kings. The fact everything is a deliberate choice makes their MVs such a fun Easter egg hunt and I notice new things in the music, lyrics, or MVs each time especially with songs like Idol.

Yep what he said. I wish I read this comment first so my lesser/inferior comment describing the same thing didn't need to happen but oh well 🤣 Edit: it also shows they do take criticism in if it made some sense hence the heavy Korea influence (ddaeng is another obvious example you know about)
@scarletthuang91483 жыл бұрын
To be fair the rabbit in the moon is a chinese reference, not korean. Their dancing is african, and there are chinese characters written in the music video, so it wasn’t solely about the korean culture but they are also trying to say that no matter how diverse you are or what culture you are in you should be proud of who you are, where you came from, and love yourself.
@reneezemlock78803 жыл бұрын
@@scarletthuang9148 The rabbit in the moon mythology is common among most Asian countries, yes China, but Also Korea and Japan. Chinese WAS the written language in Korea and only the super educated and wealthy could read/speak it which is why King Sejong hired someone to create a written language that could be written and read by everybody based on their spoken language... enter Hangul and why Korea has "Hangul Day" every October 9th. And yes... some of their moves are based on African dances while other are based on traditional Korean dances, like the hat dance.

I’m from the Caribbean, and this video reminds me of Carnival.... that’s how joyously frenetic it is. Firstly, the shaggy “beasts” you asked about are a traditional dance character called the Bukcheong lion. This lion dance is supposed to be an exorcism or a dispelling of evil spirits. They performed this live at the MAMA awards in 2018 and had a whole bunch of traditional dancers come out on stage and live drumming. JHope did a modern hiphop dance to the traditional Korean drums, and JK and Jimin did traditional dances. Jimin was especially praised for the fan dance he did. This is traditionally a dance by women, but he brought this defiant masculine grace to it while honoring the technical aspects of the dance... BTS live is on a whole different level. “Idol” pays great homage to the pansori tradition. In Korean culture, Pansori is a singing/talking style of storytelling set to drums. It was an important part of the oral tradition of the nation. I have a theory that this pansori tradition is why Korean rap and hip hop is predisposed to being so GOOD. They are used to telling story in those short verses against a heavy beat... but that’s my theory. In “Idol”, you will periodically hear the exclamation “Ursoo!”. In the pansori tradition, this is an encouraging enunciation to build the sense of community and excitement in the storytelling. Another key aspect of Korean culture is the GORGEOUS hanboks the guys wore in the scenes in the traditional pavilion.

Actually the video "English Priest reacts to Idol" is the video that brought me to BTS, that changed my perspective on the type of music I thought BTS did. DKDK TV has another explained/theory video for Idol. It really is an amazing song and still one of my favorites, according to YT music I listened to it the most in 2021. Check out the live performances from Jimmy Fallon ( both are great but the one from 2020 is beautiful) and also the one from 2018 MMA. Between the two I can't decide which I like more. Although I also really like the fancams from the Speak Yourself tour where you can hear the fanchants. They kill every performance of Idol.

The Love Yourself series is a collection of 3 albums that lead us to understanding how to love. LY: Her (DNA and serendipity) is about that ideal that you will find your soulmate. Your destiny. LY: Tear (Fake Love and Singularity) is about that perfect love being torn apart. LY: Answer (Idol and Epiphany) is about the true answer to finding love. That is to love yourself before you can love another. Just imagine 60,000 fans singing “You can’t stop me loving myself” at the tops of their lungs. The reach and the effect BTS has on the world is a truly awesome thing.

Much of the dance is based on a traditional Korean folk dance. While it sets out to acknowledge external influences, basically when we go through Jimin's mouth, we are being shown that they know they are Korean inside. Therefore, Korean folk dance, Korean 'scat', traditional Korean clothing, traditional symbolism like the white tiger, traditional Korean celebratory dancing lions at the end. It was absolutely a response to criticisms they were forgetting where they came from but was also part of the Love Yourself theme of the album trilogy.

This song is pointed towards the people who be-little bts for such small things, such as yoongi being to pale or having very light skin, so in the video he wears a shirt that has snow white on it 2:11 . Bts also got hate anytime they used a green screen (which isn't that often) so they made sure to include many colorful and bright green screens in the video. The haters also said jungkook always uses autotune (which again isn't true) and it sounded bad, so he had autotune over his voice in the song 2:18 . The haters has stated many times before that Bts' jhope dances slopply/off beat, so in the video he's dancing beside one of the blow up ballons that you'd see at a carwash 2:03 . Haters have pointed out that they hate seeing Rm (or Namjoon) in filters so you can see he uses filters in the first half of the video 1:09 . And as you know bts gets haters for no absolute reason so they made sure to shout them out, and repeatedly tell them that they love themselves 1:30 . So basically bts is just doing whatever the haters are hating them for to tease them, and honestly they don't give a shit
@lizpaniagua91003 жыл бұрын
they do get lots of support, hence their views and broken records, but they get as much (if not more) hatred for literally no logical reason at all. in this song they respond to people saying that they'd become "westernized" and were kind of dismissing their roots, at a time when they kind of started to blow up in the west. while the lyrics are more straight forward, there's LOTS of hidden meanings all throughout the video. it can seem over the top as first time watchers/listeners, but everything was done intentionally to get their message across. DKDKTV has a great explanation video that breaks down all the cultural references and even further analyses the lyrics. thank you for the video!

Idol is one of those songs that you need to know BTS’s history to really understand. Being an Idol is something that a lot of people want to be in South Korea but in BTS case it was shoved in their faces like you are nothing more than an idol. Specially in the rappers case, they accused them of being sellouts for being mainstream. They also got a lot of hate in their early years, and when they started coming to the states they got hate for that too. You guys see them as this big success (and they are) but their path there was really difficult and you can’t understand why BTS fans (ARMY) are so dedicated to them until you know their backstory.

The visuals and references to Africa are there because part of the back-beat here is derived from African music, as is part of the dance they do, which is taken from a traditional dance called Gwara Gwara. The bright, colorful materials in their suits at the beginning and end are also patterned in tribute to African clothing. There's another version of IDOL we've only heard ONCE -- an all-Korean traditional music style version that they performed on a truly MIND-BENDING stage at the MMA (Korea's Melon Music Award) show in 2018. You need to see that entire performance, called "Who Are You?" It includes Fake Love, Airplane Pt. 2, and IDOL, and it is seriously one of the best live performances I've ever seen. BTS makes these mixes of their hits to perform live that are straight FIRE, and then we never hear them again. I'm hoping someday they show up on live albums or something.

When I first saw this MV, I hated it 😂 because of the craziness going on. It was one of the first BTS MV I saw when I was still new to them. Now, after learning more from DKDKTV and from other commenters, it is now one of my favorite. DKDKTV gives you the cultural references but there are a lot of things in MV that they don’t mention. Here are some: BTS CGI-some people complained about their use of CGI in MV, so they made this MV full of it. RM- shows RM with filter on his face. During a VLive video with fans, he used a filter and a fan didn’t like it and told him to stop using it. So here, they give him a filter. Jin- he goes by the nickname World Wide Handsome and he sings the line: “it’s ok, I’m in love with myself.” He also drew Kore the whale. Not sure what it all means, but Jin loves finishing and Kore the whale is now part of BTS image and merch. Suga- he wears Snow White sweater. People were complaining he’s to pale, so it’s emphasized in this video. JHope- someone complained about him being lanky, so they have him wear a bugs bunny sweater and dance next to the prop to emphasize. Jimin- complaint to him being too feminine is emphasized with his scene holding the fan. V- a fan didn’t like him wearing suspenders or glasses so he does. The shirt worn is the same worn by someone who interviewed them and felt it was ugly. His necktie is a picture of Pinky & the Brain 😁. JK- haven’t learned of any complaints. 😂 there’s a brief scene of him twerking. And he’s wearing a shirt in Russian. Yes, the dance has a lot of different influences to showcase that they are a world phenomenon. Not only does it include Korean traditional dance but also South African and Bollywood. I’m sure there’s plenty more so, I hope to learn other hidden meanings from ARMY in the comments.

Some of their hardships began because they were from a small company. In Korea, kpop music and their record labels are taken seriously. BTS started becoming popular and the very serious fans of other kpop groups couldn't handle their favorite groups getting beaten by BTS. Also some Korean TV shows and award shows treated BTS horribly, cutting broadcasts and critiquing them on air. One concert series actual told them when they got there, they couldn't go on. Another award show didn't even give them a dressing room and they had to change in the hallway in front of everyone. Their career was a struggle for years.

Since you mention BTS lyrics and some of their songs addressing hate: "BTS hardships 2013-2021" is a super good video addressing some of the hate and criticism BTS has had to go through in their years as Bangtan/BTS (the amount and the kind of hate they get is kind of unusual, both personal and large scale). While it is not addressing the reasoning behind this specific song and MV(there are explanation videos out there), it all goes back to BTS being outsiders/underdogs in many ways.

4:57 “do a lot of people do not like them?” Yes, a lot… it really started because they were the punching bag of other Korean artists/fandoms, since they were really trying to make their way in an industry that favors connections and money; for years people targeted them and it was a normal thing to make fun of them for their ‘low class’ clothes and their small participation in shows (they were always like the backup plan or they were left out). It really sounds crazy, but people started posting nasty videos, campaigns and malicious comments because internationally they started getting big, out of the hands from those in control of who gets visibility, so they couldn’t even breathe without being criticized. That’s why BTS and ARMY relationship is so close and protective, because we always find the way to support each other, and we push for their music to be heard. I’m not joking when I tell you even the books they read are ripped apart in attempts to make them look bad. They have talked about those times when they could’ve ‘cut corners’ to get to the top but they decided they wouldn’t do it (fill media people pockets) and they are really protective of their works so they don’t get taken advantage by labels, which again, makes people mad because they don’t throw money around for spins, and it makes them mad that even without the industry support, bts got this big. But all comes back to the fundamentals, their work ethic and their music, that’s the things we value the most about them. Yes they have videos with million views, but they also have the most disliked video on this platform… And there’s something ‘funny’ about all of this, because you can see people talking shit about them here and twitter but they also go and pay tickets for their concerts, because a big chunk of those who pose as haters actually like their music. Another thing, earlier this year there was a German Radio DJ who went on a rant about BTS cover of Fix You, and according to him they deserved to be sent to North Korea and were a COVID-like virus that deserved to be eradicated with vaccines. That was just because they sang a cover. You can look up on that story by his name, Matthias Matuschik. It became a really huge thing, especially because hate crimes against Asian people were on the rising, exacerbated by the pandemic. It’s believed that was what actually prompted this Coldplay/BTS collab, because not only BTS had already said they wanted someday to have one, but this cover sparked inspiration in Chris Martin to work on a love song, or like he explains “is about someone being told they can’t love a certain person or be with this race, or can’t be gay… maybe we’re not supposed to be together [with BTS] but it turned out to be one of the must fun things ever”.

MMA 2018 idol performance was selected as the ' legendary performance' in MMA 2021, bcz of that performance (they fused traditional Korean sounds with the song attracting both local and global audiences.) there was an increase in demand and interest for Korean traditional sounds resulting in the introduction of sounds of 50 more instruments.

So at 4:57 when you guys asked "Do a lot of people not like them?" There are lists and lists of things to talk about and I think you guys should watch some of the intro to bts videos and videos about their hardships. You can react to it or watch it on your own time, but I think it will help you learn a lot more about them and who they are (plus it will help you learn their names as well.) I'm going to summarize, but I strongly suggest you watch some videos on it that go really in depth. This is a BIG comment, I'm sorry. It's so easy to make big paragraphs when it comes to bts. ~ -RM and Suga were underground rappers and got a lot of hate for "leaving to join an idol group" and wearing the clothes they do / wearing makeup / dancing and just about everything they do as "idols" -If you look at bighit music and hybe now you would not believe this but in the beginning big hit entertainment started from absolute nothing and was not apart of the "big 3" companies so everyone thought they weren't going to go far or make it and gave them such a hard time all while they worked so incredibly hard to prove themselves. -They also get a lot of hate regarding how they go about their music and culture. People say they are selling out and losing their culture because they have songs in English. -A BIG ONE is people hating on bts for anything they can think of, just to have any reason to hate on them. One time people were mad that they were breathing heavy after a performance. BREATHING???? like regular people wouldn't breath heavy after singing and dancing as hard as they do??? and it also ties into people trying to say they lip sync. -Some people send them unnecessary hate because they think bts' fandom is toxic (which yes there are some toxic people who say they are army. every fan base has them) but that is just not the case. Army as a whole are really protective over them because we know everything they go through and we just want people to see them for who they are and the amazing things they do. So if people hate on them of course we are gonna be mad about it. But in general if you are nice to Army, Army is going to give that positive energy and nice vibes right back to you. and the obvious: -Bts are Korean and there are racist and xenophobic people in this world who just see a group of 7 Korean (young) men and already don't like them because of their own perceived thoughts in their heads with no other reasoning. It really sucks, if people would just look at them with an open mind and heart they would see a group of 7 men with giant hearts and an amazing love for music. They have a song for just about anybody in a bunch of genres and they work SO INCREDIBLY HARD. They deserve everything they are achieving and I am so happy they are getting the love and appreaction that they are getting now. Like there are so many songs I could write down to prove that point (and to suggest you react to!!!) (I'm not including songs they already reacted to but obviously those songs also help prove the fact that bts have different types of songs for everyone!! okay here we go: Boy With Luv, Fake Love, Fire, DNA, Blood Sweat & Tears, Boy In Luv, War Of Hormone, Jump, Spine Breaker, Baepsae, Just One Day, We Are Bulletproof The eternal, N.O, No More Dream, We Are Bulletproof pt 2, and there are the solo songs too! Epiphany, Serendipity, Singularity, Euphoria Solo and unit within bts but also the solo mix tapes like Agust D and D2 from Suga, Hope World from J-Hope, mono and rm from rm. holy sht there are so many like i literally wanna keep going!!! Run, Best Of Me, Butterfly, Spring Day, save me, im fine, love myself THE CYPHERS ALL 4 OF THE CYPHERS, begin, lie, mama, shadow, persona, ego, my time, home, airplane pt 2, filter. I'M LITERALY LISTING OFF THEIR DISCOGRAPHY RIGHT NOW BUT I'M TRYING TO PROVE A POINT THAT THERES A SONG FOR EVERYONE. i'm not even sorry hahah * also kinda tried to stick to songs that have MVs *) If you are reading this, thank you for your reaction videos and giving bts a chance. Just a reminder to always have cc/subtitles on when you are watching their official music videos. Also if you wanted to get to know them more as a group, they have shows like Run BTS, Bon Voyage, In The Soop and more where you get to see them interact with each other and have fun! I really love them, they help a lot in getting to know bts. Run bts is free, its on vlive and weverse! And if you arent GetSideways Reacts and you are reading this, either: 1. HI ARMY! I hope you think I explained this well. Its 7am and I need to sleep. or 2. HI OTHER PEOPLE LEARNING ABOUT BTS! Please look into the other songs this YT Channel reacted to as well, I just didn't add them cause this comment is already SO LONG. I really love BTS and as you can see I am passionate about helping people learn about them!!! (Like I said at the start please look into the intro to bts videos and maybe a bts hardships video, They will explain better and more in depth as well and you get the chance to learn their names and more info about them! Also the "Korean explains" videos about specific songs are really great too!)

When I first saw this mv, I was reeling, it was so overwhelming... 😂 Felt like a fever dream, now well knowing why its so overwhelming and trippish, I relish in that feeling. OK here it goes, this is going to be a long ass comment. Rm's opening lines, he was very conflicted when they first started and struggled with labels and stuff, he soon realised he was just 'himself' and I'm proud of him for that. V' glasses and namjoon's Snapchat filters, when they did livestreams, ppl apparently told them they didn't look good with them and told them to stop them. (hah take that haters) Suga's snow White sweater because ppl told him he was too pale or something. The Korean references because ppl said they were becoming too "westernised" after gaining popularity. The clones effect where there were several of the members as ppl told them that seven members were too many. (😂) Basically, they took all the things haters and naysayers told them, multiplied it several times and put it all into one video... 😂 A huge Fu!(Oh? You don't like this, well here's more of the same thing.) I goddamn love the message behind the song AND it is a total banger.

I love love this song. Korean culture on full display here with the tiger, the beautiful hanboks they were wearing and as in the beginning when RM says what they call him and they don’t give two blinks what people may think about their decision to become idols There is an explanation video that explains all the symbolisms shown in the video. Can I suggest you watch the 2018 MMA stage live presentation of this. It’s totally awesome. I like how you don’t interrupt the video that way you can get the full effect of the video. I give you guys 5 🌟s. Nice, keep going.

This is Korea at its finest. Choreography (based on traditional farmer's dances called Pungmul and Nongak), then the hanbok - the traditional clothing they are wearing. The leaping tiger refers to the crouching tiger that resembles the shape of Korea. The dancing lions are also part of Korean culture sued usually to expel evil spirits on the first night of the moon of the new year. Korean colours are blue, red and yellow. That video is essentially Korea and they are conquering the world sunset and sun rise etc. :D

Even if you watch it 4 or 8 times you still will be scratching your heads about things in this song/video. I know you said you don’t like to read explanations or information about them…..but you’re really missing out by not doing so. It will make your experience much richer by knowing them better and what’s been going on with them to bring them to where they are today. Truly, you wouldn’t regret the time spent. Even if you don’t react to the content, just watching a couple extra videos on your own would help clear up your questions. Just trying to be helpful 💜

Directly or indirectly all their music is about them, but what they are going through is not happening just to them. This song might be about what one or the other said about them, but it's also about everyone of us. Be yourself, love yourself, and allow yourself to be different, accept every side of you, don't have to fit in a box.
