What concerns me about the Australian TV segment is that these type of jokes - hardcore mockery - are only funny to people who most likely ALREADY have xenophobic and/or racist views. People seem to forget the intention behind blackface, too. Even if someone is making their skin look darker to look more black (although I'm 100% certain that isn't the situation here), the intentional of blackface was to mock. If someone does it because they're showing people that they think it's beautiful, there is obviously no offense intended there and no reason to get offended. People aren't really offended over this. They have other deeper issues going on.

When Bts first went to the BBMAs in 2017, he was kind to them and Armys at first. Once he realized he could get clout by mentioning Bts, he started being super suggestive. He didn't ask if any of them were gay; he asked who was in a relationship with each other and who was the next 1D's Larry situation. It was GROSS. I believe the way they mocked BTS is not only due to BTS being Asian, but also due to very unhealthy notions of masculinity and sexism in Western cultures. Also, the BTS fans that are shown on the media are largely groups of girls/young women and there is loooooong history of dismissing what girls/young women like as frivolous/vain/low quality - even the Beatles themselves had to deal with that in their early years. That prejudice exists in every single form - what girls read, write, wear, sing, paint, dance, play, etc.. is always policed. The basic principle of this is not so different from mocking an adult for liking videogames, but is worse due to sexism.

@Black To Grace , but isn't blackface used with the intention of mocking/making fun of people with dark skin? I understand what you're saying, but at the same time if you look at it at a different angle, then the photo looks so aesthetically pleasing (imo) thanks to the painted skin that gives a nice contrast, so in this case it's showing that dark skin makes it more beautiful, therefore I see nothing offencive. Why do you think it should be considered mocking and racist?
@FIFI-0-05 жыл бұрын
Black To Grace it’s not racist, it is art. Black and white has always been used in art to contrast each other, this Is coming from someone who paints often, of course art is subjective but you can’t say someone was being racist when they clearly weren’t.

As an Australian myself I find it disgusting and horrible the way that they spoke about bts. Especially because Australia is a MULTICULTURAL country! if you go into an Australian city you will find that there are people from all different races, cultures and religions. That’s something that should be celebrated and people like that are just bringing down other cultures and races. As an Australian I would like to say that this is just a small portion of our population and most people aren’t like that. We need to ignore people like this and celebrate diversity!

As an Australian army I felt so angry and heart broken. It’s sad that there’s so many racist individuals still, they try to be inclusive for media play. The lack of asian representation is sad. Like I’m asian myself and I felt proud that bts is breaking out of the korean shell with such a great message. It seriously pissed me off with the shows apology. They also did this with blackpink by stating at their concert teenagers were selling drugs. However it wasn’t blackpinks concert but a rave festival !! :-/ Trying to put kpop in a bad light

Thank God I've never seen that obscene tv segment on BTS on 9 news. Literally stopped watching t.v. since like i was in high school. I'm in uni now. That was tasteless and I'm not even an ARMY. Australian society is still quite racist at this roots but people of the younger generation are more aware of this issue and therefore trying to stray away and shift that attitude. But as an Australian to think that this was deemed acceptable to air on tv is just utterly embarrassing. Thumbs up to Channel 9 for embarrassing not only Australians but Australian media as a whole on a global level :)

I was highly offended by the @20onOne thing! They didenough research to find a video of Jimins voice cracking instead of literally any other. They dug deep enough to know they spoke at the UN but joked it was about hair products. It was all wrong and THEY KNEW IT! The apology was the worst non-apology I ever heard. This absolutely reinforces the stereotypes of Asian kpop. And BTS couldn't be further than those stereotypes. I'm just mad about this level of arrogance and ignorance. Ugh.

I think what this video showed is how sensitive we all are. We all have our painful history of being dehumanizing, humiliated, and belittle. The same way that we don't want others to pick out our wounds, its important that we also take care to not needless pick at the wounds of others. What may seem like humor to us may be a slap in the painted blackface of another.

We have a bunch of those kind of talking head "comedy" shows in the States as well. Not one of them would have aired that segment. It was just tedious, xenophobic, weirdly denigrating stuff. Any US producer would have pulled that segment and told them to go write something funny, preferably not racist. But in Australia...they can be really racist there, especially against Asians.

My best friend has had to deal with a lot of crappy serious and "it's a joke" comments over the years, and dang, the whole Australian show made me cringe. People think because of comedy like this that it's okay to treat real people like that, and it's not. If we don't call them out, they'll spread that misinformation to others who will make horrible comments to people. We can't let it stand.

As an Australian, i apologise to everyone who has had to listen to this bs that came from my country. I was absolutely SHOCKED when i heard what those other Australians said about bts and it is ridiculous. I just want you all to know that majority of Australians are not like that. Most Australians are really nice and polite and i have never heard anything like this from an Australian, let alone Australian television and it just hurts me so much! It is such disgusting behaviour and i really hope someone teaches those people a lesson and i hope theyre fired from their jobs because this behaviour is completely UNACCEPTABLE towards anyone or any artist. I really have no words for this and i am almost embarrassed to call myself an Australian as some armys are saying rude things towards the whole of Australia itself but i really want you to know that almost no one in Australia is like that and i pray for those hosts to burn in hell. Again I apologise that people have had to feel this way due to people from my country and i hope nothing like this ever happens again in any country

The color black is not owned by any race or ethnicity. Blackface goes much deeper than black paint. People who only look at the surface and not the deeper meaning behind a piece of art often misunderstand. An artist is nor responsible for others' prejudice. Blackface is very controversial, but Tyler Perry has made millions using the same stereotypes blackface mocks.

i agree with all the points danny and david made in this video. however, what i still cannot let go was when they put jimin’s voice crack in there to make it seem like “they can’t sing” or whatever. i’m an aspiring singer and jimin and i are alike in the sense that our performances must be absolutely perfect and that we beat ourselves up and don’t really think we’re good ( even when people around us assure us that we did fine). of course i know i’m good to a certain extent, but whenever i make the smallest mistake i beat myself up and sometimes even cry about how embarrassing it was. even if the rest was good if not amazing to others. they’re trash for not considering how the boys feel. thanks to coming to my TED talk. love your videos ! 🤧❣️

Channel 9 - Australia news channel previously used the images of BLACKPINK concert in Australia for the wrong reason. They said that there were people charged for drug supply at a K-pop festival but used pictures of BLACKPINK at the girls’ concert. They gave the viewers of the news channel the wrong impression of BLACKPINK. This issue should also be brought into the light.

You Guys were so on point about the Australian program. They had collected a group of has beens and have nots to read some lines without knowing who they were. (Rob Mills was a Voice contestant and his main claim to fame is for fucking Paris Hilton) Australians on the whole are racist, wether it be upfront or passive, they use humour as a guise to exploit this so it easy to come back and say, 'don't be so sensitive' or 'It was only a joke' This type on attitude is sadly built into Australian society. I'm Australian by the way and I haven't seen much improvement in 40 years
