The thing is BTS don't only paved the way in US/Western countries but in Asia too. For God sake Asia =/= SK, Japan & China. Countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Middle East etc also a place where they paved the way. As an Indian I can tell you no foreign artist made their place like BTS did. They have huge fan base here. It's a big thing bcz bollywood music is dominate here. They're so big that BTS come under Most streamed artist in India. No act have made place like BTS. So BTS have indeed pave the way and put kpop in global level. And their is also stats from 2018 kpop start rising

Even if we were only to count Japan, BTS' growth there is unprecedented for Korean artists. Their achievements in Korea, the homeground of every Kpop artist, are also unmatched. They truly paved the way EVERYWHERE, and it's just deliberate idiocy to deny it. Kfloppies are just blinded by hate and envy.

Admitting bts paved the way doesn't make your fav group or artists less talented or less recognition.. or erase their achievement.. it's also doesn't mean your fav didn't work hard or experience any hardship.. they do.. but bts the one who made it easier for them .. all of their hardship didn't go to waste and they get what they deserve..

I agree with this, wholeheartedly!! I think from what I've seen, it is a mix of jealousy, denial, and annoyance lol. The first two needs no explanation but the last one, I can understand a little. Every time there's an achievement or new milestone reached for kpop in general that isn't from BTS, people will still somehow make it known that it was "BTS that paved the way" even though it was another group/artist that made said achievement/milestone. Like I can understand that feeling of seeing your faves work being invalidated or dismissed because "BTS did it first" or "they made it easier for the rest". It's exactly as you said, BTS paving the way is a fact but that shouldn't somehow make your fave group/artist less talented or less recognized. But you know people, they take it personal for some reason.

I always hear in the k-pop fandom that armys are toxic BUT all I see is the fandom shitting on BTS and their achievements 24/7. You can prefer a certain group while ackowledging the fact that BTS paved the way, it doesn't mean that you can't love and support your group first if you want. I can understand Armys that become defensive in face of a lot of bullshit that is often said about BTS. I myself have to stay away from the k-pop community sometimes because a lot of people spew ridiculous things. When I hear that Blackpink is superior to BTS I have to yeet myself out real fast because that's just objectively not true. Blackpink are queens of huge MVs and beat drops, they're known for it. But YG is responsible for the videos and none of the members produce music or have any intel really. They don't write either. SO how can we compare them to BTS who write, produce, have wayyyyyyy more songs in their discography (in almost every genre). I must also say that I don't feel an ounce of passion in Blackpink anymore. BTS love music, they love their fans, that's why Army is so damn loyal. Such devotion doesn't come out of nowhere.

6:48 I'm a fan from India and have been Army since 2016. To give you context, Indian music industry is HUGE. It is just because it's not similar to the US or Japan music industry, you don't see Indian music industry at the top but this industry has a lot of money & influence. We didn't have the streaming & buying culture until recently. BTS paved the way for other K-pop groups in India & it's SO SIMPLE to prove In India, only BTS had a major appeal. So much so that we tagged & requested vh1 India to play BTS. We trended tags for BTS. Vh1 did do a program since 2017 called kpopd, where all K-pop groups were played. It was our efforts that got the show. Today, if you ask any other K-pop group fan, the majority will say that it was the show kpopd in Vh1, which introduced them to their fav Also, we didn't have spotify until 2019. We have streaming apps that we get for free/subsidized as an offer with our sim cards(these apps are owned or partnered with these sim card companies). No one even cared about spotify in India. Indian armys tagged & trended tags for almost a year for spotify in India Finally, in 2019, when spotify launched here, it was mostly Armys who were the initial sign ups From introducing a seperate chart for international artists (IMI charts) to making bollywood song edits for bts(which went VERY viral & got new armys so other kpop fans started doing the same) Army & BTS paved the way

@@maymaht5175 That's been a thing for a long time, the seniors tell me. Saw it myself on TOP voting last year: BTS and two other groups in two categories- Best Song and Best MV, if I remember right. For Best Song, Group A was the 'BTS-beater', the one the other fandoms had chosen to throw all their votes to, so they and BTS were pulling about 90% of the votes combined. Group B had like 2.5%, along with all the other nominees. But on Best MV, Group B was the chosen 'BTS-beater', and Group A was now down at the bottom with the other nominees, getting about 2%. It's not exactly cheating, because you can't *make* a fan vote for the group they claim to like. But I do wonder how Group A and Group B would feel about that. And it does prove something: it proves a lot of K-pop fans are more about taking down their rivals than actually supporting their groups. ARMY's different: ARMY is loyal. When we vote, we vote for BTS no matter where they are in the lineup. We don't throw our votes away to help, say, Group 2nd Gen beat Group 4th Gen. The downside is we end up voting against 5-20, even as many as 28 fandoms.

As an American school teacher, I have seen first-hand the influence of BTS. I remember when Gangnam Style became popular. A number of my teenagers would sing it and even attempt to dance to it. Then its popularity faded. I forgot Korean music existed until "Kids React" did a a video about K-pop. I thought, "That music is interesting." And on rare occasions, I would listen to K-pop music in the background while I worked on stuff. I could not tell you the difference between any group. Then I taught several super fans who educating me about Korean culture and the music industry. They gave me lists of music to listen to. For the first time, I sat down and actually really paid attention to the videos. There were many artists they told me about, but I very quickly realized BTS was my favorite. The depth of their lyrics, the artistic of their videos. Soon I was playing K-pop music in my class while my students worked. I continue to see K-pop's popularity with my students. I have some students who try to work BTS into every project that they create in my class. It's quite delightful for me to see.

the react channel really did something for kpop and introduced it to the main public of their subscribers who knew nothing about kpop there was lots of positive reactions and reciprocation. it's just one of the avenues how kpop was introduced to the west. armys never talk about it bc in their ignorance they only see bts paving the way or only bts' music catching attention (personal anecdotes are not facts). just bc I wasn't into kpop circa 2000's doesn't mean there wasn't a growing market in the west.

@@Pipperius lots of ARMYs discredit the other ones and try to make it an only bts accomplished this thing. truth of the matter is there was a COMBINATION of multiple things that happened over time that opened the door for kpop both in the west and globally. There is no bts paved the way because there's so many things that paved the way. it's like the saying " the straw that broke the camel's back" it's not really the straw that did it it was an amalgamation of things. now lets address hypocrisy. if bts doesn't make it in award shows or isn't shown on big television networks variety shows, it's okay. they're underdogs and they've got a supportive fandom that just isn't visible to the public and it's all okay because the fandom spends money and financially supports bts, basically bts is selling albums and concert tickets. yet if other groups don't make it on western and american talk shows, award shows, or win any awards they must be nonexistent to the market but then you look at their concerts in north america and they're touring all over the continent? does it matter if these other groups not winning awards if they making bang and collecting revenue?? so why are THEY called flops? armys wanna claim all other groups are flops and only bts reached success in america but it's not true. got 7 had a sizable fandom in US waay back and it's not like they were trying to break to western market. the following is not a opinion but a fact: award shows don't define success. if bts didn't win a gramy does that mean bts is not successful? so many kpop groups from other companies are selling albums and concerts in america, which is big money for a korean who converts that to local cash, even if they didn't win a single award show. people don't know this but sm had their groups tour freaking western europe in 2000's waay before bts was even formed. kpop existed and was becoming known without bts (hello bigbang anyone?) and would have so without bts. sucess of kpop doesn't rely on what's within the constrains of kpop, there are so mady korean dramas that had idol actors and ost or even kpop acts do an ost that created a gateway for kpop and introduced kpop to them. and if you look at k cinema you'll see that the movie parasite and netflix's squid game broke into the western masses and general public. wich none of it had any correlation to bts. it was just a matter of time before kpop was going to break to gp too. If it wasn't going to be bts it was going to be someone else. and that's a fact. armys themselves don't wanna see how their own group is disposable for western masses.

@@3xitthissid3 You can argue with the wall, bts paved the way. 😋 you cannot compare kpop groups touring in arenas, when bts are literally selling out legendary STADIUMS all over the world, something not even most western artists can accomplish. And you mentioning kpop groups selling albums in america is so funny to me because the only reason kpop acts can sell their physical albums in america is because of army demand of BTS albums in 2017, i was there when they first started to sell their albums there and soon enough all the kpop industry started doing it lmao, so yeah once again bts paved the way.

BTS are a once in a lifetime act, they have broken so many records becoming the first Korean Artists to do so. No one can do it like them and no one is on par with them. The main reason why the entire Korean industry does not want to admit this is because they created a system and a belief that if you follow this system you will succeed. They were also profitting off of that system (variety shows, performances, etc etc). BTS was given no place there so they created their own way, and just kept on running. If you look at ANY other kpop artist's music and compare it to BTS music, you will notice a HUGE difference. Even if topics are "love yourself" the introspection and the emotion BTS songs have in them are just different. There are very few songs in the entire existence of kpop that can compete with, say, The Truth Untold- and this song is not even a title track, not even the second most important track on the album. BTS has no filler songs, they don't have MVs that are just pretty faces. Everything they ever did had purpose and meaning, and emotion and an individual standing behind it. That, alone, learned them respect from their fans first. I myself first heard another Big3 artist first and thought "OK this is fun but there is nothing human standing behind it- I will listen to this once, twice, jump a bit and dance and go on with my life". Then I heard BTS's Idol, and I was like, "fun" and when I went on to look at lyrics translations... My first thought on "it's okay, I'm in love with myself" was like, wow that's posh and whatever. But then as I researched the words meanings and cultural influences.. I realized that this meant being gentle to oneself but still working on improvements, on your own terms, to your own wishes. This self love from the members was never arrogant, it was always rebellion to the society that was saying they weren't enough and that was pushing them down every second. This self love, I wanted that. The very fact that we can discuss what they meant by their songs is respect worthy in my opinion. BTS has gone on to earn it from millions of people- armies and many non armies- by raw talent, emotion, and honesty in what they had to say. And earning that respect by putting thought behind everything they did- that, for me, is paving the way.

I've been a kpop fan since 1st generation. During 1st generation, kpop was only popular to minimal Asians in the US. 2nd generation, kpop grew more fans in Asian fans. This is when Bi Rain, Se7en, and BoA tried in the US but failed. Big Bang was when kpop grew more during 2nd Gen but Taeyang's solo album was what brought more kpop fans and even some Americans started to listen. But when BTS came, they really were the ones who paved the way for kpop to grow globally. During 3rd generation I didn't intervene in kpop much anymore but I still hear about those that were becoming famous. BTS was the most famous kpop and that is when I went back into kpop life. So as someone who has been a kpop fan since the very beginning, don't hate but BTS did pave the way for kpop globally. Without them, kpop would have stayed in Korea and very minimal globally.

Yeah thats what I slowly feel that other groups especially from big3 are very rarely mentioning and interacting with bts. I thinks the agency and fans also play a role in this. Only the soloist, duo or true artist often mentioning bts. First time I realized that I feel sad that bts struggling with making friends in the industry🥺 I see that they are more comfortable with nonceleb friends now. I bet their parners will also come from outside of the industry😁 As long as they are happy and feel peace in life I will always support bts only☺️👌

I'm from America and have been listening to K-pop since 2009, so I have experienced a lot of everything she said. Girl's Generation's "Gee" and Wonder Girls' "Nobody" were a "watch this video its different" and then they faded away. Same thing happened with Psy, he was considered a one-hit-wonder or a passing fad. There was no mainstream talk of K-pop until BTS won Top Social Artist at Billboard in 2017. Yes there were K-cons before that, one that BTS even preformed at, but it was still very niche. I would say K-pop is still very niche in America, I have met only one person in real life that knew of any group other than BTS and only two others that had listened to BTS themselves. Americans (as a whole, not every person) tend to stick to the things they like and not divert from it. Of the seven people I have seriously tried to show BTS too only two have had any interest at all. People like what they like and I'm ok with that. I know the name Drake, but I could not tell you one of his songs, I guarantee I have heard them before but I would not know it was him. I think BTS are similar in this sense, people know the name BTS and have probably heard one of their songs before but did not actually know it was them. K-pop on the other hand doesn't have even this notoriety, they are not even known as individual groups, just simply as "K-pop." Hopefully no one takes any offense to this, this is just what I have observed through my own K-pop journey over the years.

This is very accurate. I can only name two Drake songs myself but I know exactly who he is. Many people take that to mean an artist isn't that popular but it's actually a testament to how deeply they've penetrated the pop culture narrative; especially in this digital era where you can almost fully control what music you hear. A music listener that doesn't venture near any kpop circles still knowing the name 'BTS' is the definition of mainstream.

People might know the name BTS but they do not know any of their songs. I wouldn't consider them mainstream at all! They get zero radio play unless you live in LA or NY. Along with all these fandoms who don’t wanna admit BTS paved the way, and insist that their faves ‘paved their own way’, I’ve also noticed them reaching to the moon and jumping through hoops to give them a tragic underdog story… despite the fact that their faves came from rich af companies and NEVER struggled like BTS did… but just like everything else in this mess of an industry, the ‘underdog’ has become a concept that they think is just another step that’s needed to be ‘the next BTS’. First, why would you want your faves to suffer like that? And second, it’s not about a ‘rags to riches story’, it’s just about loving music and having sincerity towards your craft. Having a fake underdog concept means nothing if the music is shit and there’s nothing for people to enjoy or relate to.

I have to admit i really love Kin Sawol and Paul Blanco songs, i would never look them up if it wasnt for RM as i came from the west and only knew about Erykah Badu and Anderson.Paak. I think that one of the other problems that K-Pop groups have is that their music is just noise. There aren't any deeper meanings to their music. They aren't willing to 'rock the boat' the way that BTS did when they started talking about mental issues, social issues, etc the way that BTS didn't shy away from. BTS is willing to put that out there and stand up for that. They have a story to tell and damn if they don't do a great job with it. When the other groups start talking about things the way that BTS did, then they will start having more of an impact on the music industry. Until then, they will fail.

I think the ones who struggle to accept that BTS paved the way the most are the fans. I get it tho, to a degree. For many years other groups, including those in BTS’ generation, were regarded as the best in the industry. The best kpop had to offer. Achieving incredible achievements in different areas on their own. Then suddenly, a group not from the BIG 3, with minimal industry support, and a small (but growing) fandom is suddenly propelled to international fame and is lauded as the face of the kpop industry (completely bypassing their favs who have been making kpop history for years before BTS). I get it. It’s truly a tough pill to swallow. And it’s not like it only happened once, BTS has been growing and usurping every single one of their peers for at least 5 years now. So I understand why they push back and want to cling onto relevancy for their favs. They don’t want their favs accomplishments to be forgotten. They don’t want the history of their group to be overshadowed. I get it…but at a certain point you have to accept reality. Those fans can stay in understandable denial for as long as they like but that doesn’t change the fact that BTS has paved a way so unfathomable that it will likely take decades to surpass them (IF that ever happens). It’s gotten to the point that even the BIG 3 has accepted that BTS has paved the way bc otherwise they wouldn’t have become partners with HYBE (im looking at you YG) and crafted groups with the intention of mimicking BTS’ success. Those companies and their idols might not say it publicly but they know who’s at the top and they know who’s goals they aspire to match and exceed. So that just leaves fans who desperately and understandably want their favs to receive recognition, even if that means denying the blatant truth that BTS PAVED THE WAY. - a loyal second gen stan and 2015 ARMY

So much respect for them. They didn’t have to do media play, ads, manipulation to come this far. Thts wht making others not to accept tht BTS paved the Way. Bcuz con artists can never accept a real Artist. They first won International Award only less than of their debut. They did it before having any official Western Collaboration. They r just a kpop band whos ruling international Music Industry. All these success made people mad. Thts why there are lot of people who struggle to accept BTS.

it's almost 2023 and kpop stans still can't accept a literal fact. BTS DID PAVE THE WAY. and I find it so funny to see people go "oh but 2nd gen did it" or "BTS wouldn't exist without 2nd gen". if that's the case then I can also say your faves wouldn't exist in us without BTS. the way y'all are able to watch your faves goof around and have their own shows is because of BTS. the way y'all are able to get subtitles on your faves' videos is because of BTS. the way y'all can buy you faves' merch or albums in us is because of BTS. I sometimes think don't they feel embarrassed? like when their idols themselves accept it(yes stays I'm looking at y'all), then why are they still butthurt about it. and I find it so funny to see some 4th gen stans act brave now. like recently I saw some stays go "SKZ DESERVES TO GET A GRAMMY NOMINATION MORE THAN BTS" and I swear to god I laughed, I legit laughed. the conclusion is majority of kpop stans don't want to accept the fact that BTS DID PAVE THE WAY because they ARE jealous and they don't want to accept it, instead they always discredit BTS of their achievements. you won't see a kpop stan deny shinee invented dance practices but you'll find atleast one person shit on BTS if we say they paved the way or mention of their global achievements.

This is because people seem to think it is one or two aspects that made BTS what they are. When that isn't it. Kpop and every industry has many aspects bts has. They aren't the only one to write their lyrics or dance or sing or have beginnings in hip hop, or be underdoags or have socially relevant songs, or have guts to address politicians via their lyrics when it is that easy to get blacklisted, or have a alternate universe run through their music etc. People will bring up someone who has does 2 or 3 of these as a comparison. What makes BTS is their legacy. Not only do they do all of the things mentioned above at a level that remains unique to them alone. Their legacy runs over minimum 10 years (if you don't count predebut). It's the Attitude of both their then company made of a few extraordinary minds, that inculcated it into them, moulding them into self sufficient artists. That is not something you can recreate. That kind of perseverance is rare in any industry. Especially considering how every year they have put so much work. Even their capability to accept and speak up when they are at loss for drive instead of keeping their fans clueless etc. are an example of a phenomenon. It is a mix of the freedom that most of kpop doesn't recieve, and their own well framed mindsets that try hard not to misuse that freedom like many in the west. Thus it reflects in their music. It's practically impossible to judge their legacy by one's experience with hearing just one or 2 songs. It's a journey to experience and that is why they not only got past their own country by 2016 itself but also sustained besides the evident propaganda of the media.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to explain this to people from other fandoms or people in different platforms. 2nd generation stars like Big Bang, Rain and Psy did have success in the western market but it was ONLY their success. They had as we say in America “no coattails”. They did not have the power or officiated fan base to bring along with them the K-Pop industry but BTS did AND the did it through their own blood, sweat and tears without the infrastructure of the Big 3 companies nor their connections with the Korean media. It was a shock to their systems but not necessarily a catalyst for change in those companies or within the media. EVERYBODY’s egos took a beating and they STILL haven’t learned.

K-pop industry is basically an aesthetic industry, the difference between BTS and other k-pop idols is bcz BTS are true musicians and artists rather than just defining themselves as an aesthetic idol group. They had authentic messages in their lyrics, versatility in their discography, what they create influenced the people that listened to them organically and musically, not just pleasing aesthetically. They did it alone with ARMY by their side, we built this road together with our blood sweat and tears. It's too ignorant to deny they paved the way I hope people wake up and check their facts, stop being delusional you jealous peeps 👐

I can understand why a lot of legends in K-pop industry (Seo Taiji and 1st gen) accept that BTS paved the way cuz those people still have the essence of music before K-pop was saturated and lost their origins during 2nd and 3rd gen. They’re the closest to when K-pop is founded based on the influence of Black music. Like Epik High, one of BTS role models, whose music carries true message. Btw, incredibly well-made video! You covered every point, brought up very strong arguments and FACTS that no one can deny. Thank you very much for your effort! 💜

So how do we drill this into every one else’s minds cause everything you said was spot on. Like down to the words. This is exactly what we mean when ARMY say BTS paved the way. They made it easier for other groups to be seen, heard and loved. Now those groups have this opportunity that was given to them to make their own name but they must work harder and stop copying BTS in everything they do. You’re not gonna get anywhere in this music industry copying them. These next two years are gonna be interesting in the kpop industry.

I love the video and you made every point crystal clear. What i would like to add to further the discussion (or maybe you could touch on this in a future video): how the US market is not just objectively the biggest / most powerful music market and taste-maker, but it was VITAL for the survival of k-pop in the context of the 2 main target markets of kpop "closing" their doors for extended periods of time, leaving the already oversaturated kpop industry in a huge conundrum (since their home market couldn't sustain the evergrowing number of groups debuting with no actual domestic DEMAND). 1. First China with the kpop ban (and we know the biggest achievements and bragging points, as well as revenue pipes were coming from Chinese fandoms for all Big 3 leading groups in kpop). Unlike them, BTS has been growing an international fanbase and especially a strong core fandom in US since 2014, so by the time the "ban" in China hit, they were least affected. 2. Then Japan with its anti-Korean sentiment and kpop being the 'hostage' and cannon fodder in the 2 countries' tension filled relations over the years. One of the main arguments people use to 'debunk' the idea that BTS paved the way it is the fact that BOA, Kara, TVXQ, Girl Generation and Big Bang had success in Japan BEFORE BTS. What all those people willingly ignore is the fact that aforementioned acts didn't 'pave the way' for anyone in Japan, as seen by the lack of similar achievements or market share by any of their hoobae groups from their labels. Just like PSY made a splash for himself in US and then vanished and with him any mention of kpop until BTS came along, the same thing happened in Japan. BTS had no 'senior' artist to open their way in Japanese market, since they were from Big Hit. So, just like it happened in all other corners of the world, they built their fandom from scratch. BOA, BB, KARA, TVXQ didnlt 'introduce or recommend' BTS to their fandoms, they didn't give BTS any advantage points in Japanese music industry. There was no mainstream presence of Kpop in Japan, it was all a core fandom affair and it was all limited to a handful of artists that went in that market first. The difference? They all did it playing by the Japanese idol market rules and bowing to the language. But BTS, while releasing Japanese albums, didn't make their entire identity in Japan as something catering to them, on the contrary, it was their global appeal and achievements that made Japan tune in and see who these Asian artists who were making splashes in USA were and to wanna join the hype, not because they were hoobaes of TVXQ or BOA or KARA, not because they were kpop idols, but DESPITE them being Korean. Want more proof that BTS was actually the one 'paving the way' In Japan for the current generations, just like they did in USA? Look no further than the records BTS set in Japan. All of them were set before they even debuted and no other Kpop artist was able to come close or surpass all that boom the handful of kpop artists experienced ages ago. Japanese market had shrunken considerably, making kpop companies' lives even worse after the Chinese floodgates closed as well. BTS not only revided the kpop presence in Japan, but are the ones that have gained mainstream consciousness as GLOBAL POP artists. They outstreamed Japanese artists and outsold japanese groups in their home market. So yes, even if people hate to admit it, BTS gave kpop its 'shine' and avenues in both the top 2 biggest music markets in the world: US and Japan. What Psy and these artists have done in US and Japan is not what helped 3rd and 4th and 5th generations stand a chance in US and Japan, because BOTH markets were dead or already stale BEFORE BTS came in. Those artists not only didn't help their own companies junior artists, but reached a point where they weren't even helping themselves. -And not only did BTS revive kpop in 2016-2019, but they also saved it in 2020/21. When pandemic came, no kpop companies were ready and equipped to cope with the loss of events revenue and no audience policy. It was BTS & ARMY who showed everyone that online concerts were a thing as long as you had the demand and the know how. BH had been experimenting with the online streaming since 2017 and they used ARMY for trial & error, as well as for gauging global demand. It was BTS that showed everyone that pre-recorded contents could be a way to not only maintain visibility, but also engage new audiences. BTS literally gave everyone the recipe to survive through and post pandemic, opened again avenues for all the other groups because they created a bridge and network toward US entertainment / media industry that didn't exist before. Everything 4th and 5th generation kpop groups and their companies have been born into is something BTS took the brunt for experimenting first. And yes, something ARMY was the guinea pig for. It was the power of ARMy that opened a world of opportunities that all these companies and their idols and their fandoms would have never been given, unless we demonstrated it was fesible and lucrative for all parties involved.

After five years in this fandom, I do believe the armys who waste tweets trying to prove BTS is better than xyz groups and use the fact that BTS paved the way to downgrade others are useless for the fandom. Armys should focus on bangtan. And the rest should accept that BTS paving the way doesn't mean their favs' achievements are not valid. Fans need to stop being so insecure about their idols' success.

Thank you so much, as always. The behaviour of the big agencies actually works against their artists hopes in the west. They over-control the artists and their images, as well as the material they perform. Only when they learn how to find and trust genuine talent, let them find and exercise their voice and their own creativity, offer them support and guidance rather than control, will they have any chance of seeing similar international impact. It is as if they just have no idea how BTS made it happen. Those guys who pointed out that the existence of BTS calls into question the whole existence of those agencies, were absolutely correct. The fact that those agencies seem to have made no change in how they operate is frankly quite weird.
