The previous bass singer, Avi, left in 2017 because he was struggling to keep up with PTX’s demanding schedule and a family member had a serious health issue. PTX had a “secret” audition (advertised for a bass without naming the group), and looked at about 80 basses before choosing Matt. They did a short trial run with Matt (1 Christmas music video & a holiday tour) before making him an official member in 2018. Only lineup change in the group’s 10 year history.

@@totahsam8293 Not sure how that story got started, but NO he didn't. That rumor has been debunked by both Ben Bram (who was ACTUALLY in charge of the auditions and hired a talent scout to conduct them) and in a recent TikTok by Scott & Kirstie. Avi wasn't involved in the audition process at all. Nice story...TOTALLY untrue.

Pentatonix just dropped 5 new originals at midnight yesterday! All are amazing and all are completely different! Only one Midnight In Tokyo featuring Little Glee Monsters includes a video currently! They have 2 versions of Midnight In Tokyo- the one w/LGM and one with just Pentatonix that doesn't have a video! Both are equally amazing! They also dropped a new collaboration with Ahteez of their original song Titled A Little Space and it's amazing! Also they did a live July 4th rooftop performance of the Broadway song from the Broadway show Rent called Seasons of Love and Kirsti killed it! Another recommendation is Mitch's cover of Billie Eilish's song Your Power! It is breathtakingly beautiful and so haunting 😊😯

So yes, Matt Sallee replaced Avi Kaplan at the end of 2017, IIRC, so he's not exactly new. Yeah, I was sad that Mitch didn;t rap, he's good at it. Matt was a huge fan of the group before he ever auditioned - he drove his roomies nuts learning all the PTX bass parts he could get hold of. "Vocal percussion" and "vocal bass" are the terms I've heard. Yes, this was a mash-up of two BTS hits, and wow, if you haven't seen Matt before, you have a lots of great music to come. In addition to the new videos mentioned by others, try Shallow, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Sounds of Silence, Amazing Grace, Blinding Lights, Happy Now ... and that's just a start.

Matt had some experience with being in an A Capella group before this, too, so that had to help. He was a member of the San Francisco based group The House Jacks, from 2015-2016 I think. Deke Sharon, founder of the House Jacks, produced and consulted on the Sing Off. It’s like the A Capella six degrees of separation theory.

The new guy Matt, replace Avi (long hair) as the bass in 2017. He went through several auditions and from hearing him in an interview he didn’t know what he was auditioning for until almost the end. 🌺

The color part was Dynamite, the black and white was Butter...please check out their new releases from their original album "The Lucky Ones"...so many new originals to choose from!!! You haven't seen them in a while. Avi left in 2017. Matt took over the bass after that. There's been some confusion on how Matt got the job. People were saying Avi helped get him for Pentatonix but what happened is PTX went through an agency to find a new bass singer. Matt made through to the final round and came well prepared. He had learned all their songs and was chosen as the new bass singer. He has a great range in his voice.

😀👉Matt Sallee replaced Avi Kaplan in late 2017 as bass!! Avi left on good terms. Matt was found by PTX arranger Ben Bram. FUN FACT: Matt was already a HUGE PENTATONIX fan and had seen them in concert on his high school senior year. His choir was invited to the concert. This was very early in PENTATONIX career So Matt is a few years younger then the original members. He even got to meet them back stage. As Matt says DREAMS COME TRUE!! Also they ALL have rapping skills!!!

They didn't hire Matt because he could rap. In fact, this is the first recording he has rapped in, although he raps in their concerts. The audition process included MANY bass singers (I've heard as many as 80), and none of them knew what they were auditioning for. By the time they got down to the finalists, the singers were finally told who they were auditioning for. Matt learned the bass parts for EVERY Pentatonix song over a weekend and came to the final audition well prepared. He was already a BIG Pentatonix fan and had already met the group at one of their concerts a few years earlier, and the group members remembered him (Mitch had borrowed Matt's sunglasses and wore them on stage for the show). He was brought in on a probational basis for their 2017 Christmas tour, appeared on their Christmas TV special that year (as a "special guest"), then was hire permanently in March 2018.

So before I forget I found you guys today and after this have watched all of your PTX reactions but the end of the last video was the first time I heard you guys say his name is dayven. My son's name is pronounced the same but it's Davin. We should have spelled it like yours because everyone says it wrong 😂 you guys are great reactors though.
