David van Laar... Just discovered him on youtube. Fantastic musicality, finesse, fine resonance and first of all... his voice has very detectable masculine traits which are rare in countertenors. At some point countertenor singing was pushed into the corner to compete with female altos and sopranos. The result was a convincing female (ish) sound with difficulty to determine the gender. Yes, sounds a bit ridiculous. Andreas Scholl started sounding different more masculine, then it all was pushed forward by Jakub Orlinski whose all registers sound masculine. Nice to hear David van Laar seeking his own voice and sounding much more masculine than many countertenor super stars who sacrificed masculinity in their sound to the female sounding side.
