Buakaw's left kicks shut down his opponents right hand. Clever way to control your opponent by forcing him to protect his body with his power hand

So true ! I would add that sometimes they even program the opponent to have some wrong reaction when faking the left kick and put a powerful punch to the Jaw to get a KO !

Buakao is something else to watch. I trained in kick boxing most of my life, then I trained in Muay Thai. I tell you that thigh length bruise I got first week while holding the body shield showed me how far out our comfort zone kick boxers are when it comes to Muay Thai. Absolute respect for everyone in that sport. Taking a full force thigh or shin kick and staying on your feet takes a long time training. Most crumple. On that note, the amount of cuts, bruises and scrapes I've had on my shins and absolutely no idea where they come from shows how tough the legs get over the years 🙏

Culturally, there has been a historical tendency for the Japanese to see themselves superior to the other Asian nations (I believe this pride in national identity is also found in China & Korea). I spent three years in Thailand, and afterward met a Japanese teen in the states, who, when I told him that I lived in Thailand, went out of his way to tell me how backward Thais are. *Thee* greatest Thai boxer of all time. Buakaw is the goat. He’s won every major world title there is. He won the K1 world max championship (thee biggest title/stage there was) twice in 2004 & 2006; the first fighter to ever do so. And he should’ve won it 3 more times; but “controversial split decisions” completely cheated him out twice, and then he didn’t compete in the championship at all in 2010 after dismantling everybody on the way to it, because of some stupid changes they were trying to force. The only reason he lost one of those was from a completely stupid DQ after dismantling Kehl for the 2013/2014 K1 world max title…. But he won the Thai Fight world championship back to back in 2011 & 2012.. He’s won every major title out there. Lumpinee & Omnoi stadium champion, everything. He is the goat.

And it's amazing to see how tough Kozo is as an opponent, taking Buakaw 5 rounds to determine the winner.

There is no Thai " clinch " in the Muay Thai word. The word clinch came from foreigner from western boxing. In Thai, we call it " wrest " we never ever call it " clinch ". Thai boxers practice wrestling nearly every day. it is a standing wrest to throw the knees or thrust the elbows or throw the opponent on the floor. Sometimes they catch and bend the enemy to thrust the knees or jerk them or pull them to fall to the floor to take advantage. Muay Thai originates in the army for the war, not a sport. This was a serious business not to hug or clinch the enemy only wrest if they have to get close. In Thai words, they called it " plum tee " which means wrest and hit. Please kindly accept my Muay Thai explanation. Thank you.

Rounds 1 2 and 3 were 50/50 in my opinion. Draw was the right decision. Buakaw dominated roundhouse kicks, Kozo dominated low kicks and landed a bit more cleanly with the boxing. It was the superior conditioning that won Buakaw the fight in the end. Never a good idea to extend a fight with a Muay Thai warrior. They can go on forever.

Kozo's right arm took a lot of damage. He tried to ignore the pain, but you can clearly see that it bothered him every time he gets kick there.

Lots of great fights and amazing fighters in K-1's peak days, but no non-Japanese fighter could ever afford to let it go to a judges' decision, because the judges were, frankly, a disgrace.

This is so true. They are unforgivably biased. If you're a fan of Buakaw you know what I'm talking about.
