"YOU CAN HOLD BACK FROM THE SUFFERING OF THE WORLD. YOU HAVE FREE PERMISSION TO DO SO, AND IT IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH YOUR NATURE. BUT PERHAPS THE HOLDING BACK IS THE ONE SUFFERING YOU COULD HAVE AVOIDED. Hmm. Fonzie Kafka."

I think about this every day. The first few times I heard it I thought nothing of it, then one day I understood and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Same message as the best scene in Good Will Hunting. You can avoid suffering, but you're also avoiding experiences that make life meaningful. Getting high all the time can make you feel euphoria in the moment, but it won't give you lasting happiness or the full range of life in the end. I once heard about an experiment where researchers made a button that a rat could press that would flood its brain with dopamine. The rats pressed the button constantly, without eating or sleeping or anything else, until they died. I find myself living like this sometimes and I really used to think it was the ideal life--short, easy, euphoric. But it just ain't like that. You need all of it, the good, the bad, and the ugly, to give life meaning

Someone make a supercut of Bubbles and Mike Fletcher. Those scenes are really underrated

I only really noticed and digested this quote on my second viewing of The Wire. This by far is one of the greatest insights ever written and I think about it all the time.

That quote is also the first line of David Simon’s book The Corner

Troy T He’s more known for The Trial though. Also, look up the term “Kafkatrapped.”

@timhorgs This pretty much is David Simon's way of summing up Bubbles character to every audience watching the show.

I love this shit. Those directly relevant to the words don't employ it as far as we are concerned, but it actually involves so much that is elsewhere in the series.
