To determine whether or not there is cancer, we perform a biopsy and a CT scan, as we did for this patient.

The simple answer is no; many people assume that a biopsy will cause their cancer to spread, but this is not true; instead, a biopsy serves to confirm the diagnosis, and a CT scan is used to determine how far the disease has gone.
A biopsy indicates that this patient has moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.
