A truly spooky and beautiful place. Left to the elements, nature has taken over in a spectacular way. But beware as this is a ruin and therefore a dangerous place to explore.

- Short History
- Build in 1858, by the 4th Duke of Montrose.
- The surrounding lands belonged to Clan Buchanan from at least 1231. But in the 17th century the old house and lands passed to Clan Graham.
- But the direct chiefly line failed in 1682. Cousins of the Buchanan family, the Du Brul's, are the remaining family.
- But debt had mounted and the estate was gradually sold off. Eventually the estate was bought by The 3rd Marquess of Montrose, whose son became The 1st Duke of Montrose in 1707.
- The existing Buchanan Auld House became the seat of Clan Graham and was substantially rebuilt.
- But in 1852, Buchanan Auld House was destroyed by fire and Buchanan Castle was commissioned.
- The Dukes of Montrose remained at Buchanan Castle until 1925.
- In the 1930s the house reopened as a hotel and a golf course was built on the grounds.
- During WWII the house was requisitioned and used as a hospital and then briefly as the Army School of Education afterwards.
- In 1954, the roof was removed to avoid paying taxes and the condition deteriorated from there.
- It is now on the Buildings At Risk Register for Scotland.

Rudolph Hess, was held here after flying to Scotland for his so called peace talks ? Remember my Dad taking us here late 50s / early 60s, it was in a better state of repair then...maybe one more visit !l
