To me looks safer and cleaner then most of the "advanced" capitals of europe such as London, Paris, Rome and Munich... seems like more money doesn't mean much safety and cleaner citys. Ex and I stayed at the Marriott in Bucharest in 2001 when we adopted our daughter. Back then the currency was virtually worthless, if I remember correctly it was 128,000 lei to the dollar... I do remember putting my card in an ATM and drawing out fifty dollars and having a million lei in my hand. The shopkeepers would tell us the smaller denominations weren't worth the paper they were printed on. Nice to see the city has improved somewhat.

Bucharest was pretty depressing back there, in the 90ths . Ro still didnt recover yet after 42 years of forced communism :( Now it looks way way better for the most part ! in some areas u wont even reconigze it anymore ^^ but still work to be done not as good as is suppose to be yet , but its getting there slowly year by year the infrasctructure here its getting refurbished or improved. Whole Ro its like a huge construction yard in the last 7-8 y or so .
