Because I'm a glutton for punishment, and because I felt this movie really needed an analytical explanation in between all of the funny memes... I watched Tariq Nasheed's Buck Breaking movie.
I wouldn't recommend it.
It's just as bad as you imagined. Further, it made me take some time to assess how and why this movie found an audience. What does it say about cis-het black men, hotep culture, and some of the unique elements of black homophobia? I try to process it as best i can on this episode of the Black Media Breakdown.

I lost two really close friends to the myth that white men created black gay guys to destroy the black community. Because I'm gay, they told me I wasn't even a part of the black struggle anymore. This was coming from 2 str8 dudes I'd smoked with (weed) daily for like 2 years straight, using my room as a studio or dueling each other with my old Yu-Gi-Oh! cards for hours every other day. This happened like 2018 and we haven't spoken since. Both knew of my sexuality the entire time. The hotep shit came like a virus and when the illness sank into them, they turned on me like an ice skater.

What makes Tariq so vile is that, when you listen carefully, it becomes apparent that he KNOWS BETTER yet chooses to purposely misinform & manipulate. It's also what makes him so insidious. He's intelligent & informed, able to mix in fact w/ fiction, skillfully preying on the Black community by targeting our psyches where we're most vulnerable, confused, & desperate. He causes so much harm & all for his own personal benefit. A truly odious & sociopathic individual.

I don't know how much I believe that. This is a genuinely excellent video. I'm glad I found your channel as a fellow ex-hotep. I'm a little bit younger than you and agree with 99.9% of what you said. The ONLY quibble I have is about when you talked about how hotep homophobia is not churchy. The one thing I would point out is that a big part of hotep ideology is wrapped up in biblical origin mythology (for example, the Hebrew Isrealite ideology), Kemetic spiritual revivalism, as well as in the Nation of Islam and its derivatives (5%ers etc.). The general hotep obsession with Ancient Egypt/Kemet (and that region of the world more broadly) has a lot to do with it's presence in Abrahamic religious texts. So while their homophobia may not be directly derived from Protestant theology, their playbook is DEEPLY rooted in Abrahamic ideas of gender and sexuality. It is easy to write it off as a subconscious desire for inclusion into the patriarchy, but its a bit deeper than that. There's a religious (and sometimes quasi-religious) basis for it as well that cuts across all Abrahamic religions as well as in the hotep interpretation of Ancient Egyptian religion. The only other thing you didn't talk about (and perhaps it's a subject for another video that I'd love to watch as well), is the influence of prison culture on mainstream African American culture for cis-het black men. As we understand the carceral state to be an extension of slavery, we should be aware and sensitive to the fact that a significant amount of black men have been through incarceration and, given the prevalence of rape and sexual assault in that institution (at least historically), it stands to reason that their views on homosexuality may be informed by that. I suspect that a big part of what motivates the Buck Breaking apocrypha is a desire to disclose what has happened to a significant number of black men at the hands of corrections officers (and other inmates at the tacit behest of the institution) in recent years from a "safer" historical vantage point. That is of course NO justification for queerphobia, but in addressing the homophobia I was taught growing up, I became very aware at how often authority figures constructed homosexuality as it pertained to black men as an intrinsic part of prison and how unique the prevalence of that version of homophobia was in black communities. When I have tried to help other cis-het black men address and deconstruct their homophobia, that theme always comes up; it touches a deep nerve. Because of how common incarceration is for black men, in some of us there's a crosswiring or conflation of a valid fear of sexual assault in prison with an irrational fear of LGBTQ people. It's of course incorrect, but it also presents a HUGE opportunity to build bridges and empathy. Once I cleared that part up in myself, I was off to the races (pardon the pun). LGBTQ people are not existential rapists, and they actually face an increased risk of sexual assault in prison (and in general society). I simply point out that carceral strain of homophobia because homophobia in black communities has such a unique cultural, social, and historical context which can make it harder to address if not accounted for.
@FDSignifire
@FDSignifire 3 жыл бұрын
that's a great point to explore. I don't think it explains the whole of it but it definitely connects to the irrational fear of being emasculated. Prison rape and being "punked" in jail is a long standing spectre in the minds of black men, especially in my age group and it speaks to soooo many other insecurities. I'll definitely find a way to investigate this more in the future. Thanks so much for this useful critique!

You make several amazing points. The one that stands out for me is how the decades long mass incarceration due to the war on drugs has influenced the black psyche in this country. I think it has had just as much an affect on us as slavery and Jim Crowe. It has also influenced government and policies. There are huge gaps in the way basic civil rights are observed for white people vs those of black people..Think about stop and frisk. If it was done in the name of getting drugs off the street, then so be it. Contrast that to the way the government has approached the opioid epidemic.There is this new found compassion all of a sudden.

The funny thing about some of us as black males "reaching 40." We have to face the reality of the failure of what the system is doing to us mentally and physically. We have done what we're "supposed to do." Either in opening a business, getting their college degree, earning a trade skill, join the military blah blah blah. The insistence use of the failure of what's "acceptable" to capitalism in blackface. However, for any black male reaching 40, we have no excuses to not understand what's happening in the changing of human society. With all of history and commentary from our freedom fighters from the last few decades who were black women, black LGBT+ or others who weren't on this "Hotep" thing got ignored. Claudia Jones, a black woman who was also a "commie" had commentary on white supremacy and the exploitative nature in the 1940s. Audre Lorde, a black lesbian, went into racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia well into the peak of the CRM. James Baldwin, an openly black gay male, was followed by the FB Eye for his commentary on the United States. E Frankin Frazier had his commentary on the Black Bourgeoisie in 1957 titled ironically "Black Bourgeoisie."

Dude, I am so TIRED of people lying and saying Marsha started the first Stonewall Riot. That is simply not true. People parrot it through ignorance or malice. The woman who started the first Stonewall Riot was Stormé DeLarverie, a black lesbian. And, not just her, but the black and white gay men who went to her aid. Marsha didn't show up until the next day, according to her own testimony. Really tired of people fucking around with my history.

@@thechocolatedelegate9830 I agree that its wise not to talk to tariq because, no matter what he thinks, nothing productive will come of it. Thank you for the breakdown. The movie "Nothing but a Man" depicts the struggle of black men and the hardships they face, just trying to get ahead and violence against women. I remember watching the movie (as a teen) with my Godfather, who also, talked a lot about his own struggles whilst living in the South and drank (heavily) to self-medicate. He lived with the pain and my Godmother lived with drinking. Long/short, most black women understand the struggle (which we too are experiencing). However, let's work together amongst ourselves for our community.

I’m a white heterosexual male from the south (specifically New Orleans, a city that is highly mixed in demographics yet still manages to be filled with right wingers) and I’d give anything to have just one single friend like F.D. here other than my wife. I came up in the punk scene in the 90s/2000s and thought I was on the same page as all my friends/family but when I came home from my version of college I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was different from everyone around me in ways that I felt good about and had no interest in changing, but it made me really think, like, my beliefs and values didn’t change, just my perspective and contextual understanding, so why do I not vibe with my people like I used to? That was 10+ years ago, and the last person from that group that I kept in touch with overdosed and died about a year ago, and I’ve decided that most of my people from when I came up were just kinda shitty, and, now that I understand the political and cultural landscape of the country/world better and therefore have more context for where my environment stands in a relative sense, I see that I was always different, I just didn’t understand why or chose not to acknowledge it. So yeah, now that my last friend is gone I really miss having someone clever, wise, and awake to talk to and flesh out my ideology and worldview with, but watching F.D.’s videos this year has helped to fill that void whilst simultaneously constantly highlighting it. Basically what I’m saying is, I hope more people listen to F.D. Signifier so meeting someone who thinks like he does (and like I do) down here in the south isn’t essentially like meeting a unicorn in downtown traffic. Basically, I wanna find other people that are more than just products of their environment, people that educate themselves and make efforts to decide their path rather than just follow the path that’s laid out for them, but without going full crazy conspiracy antivax qanon like most white ppl clever enough to question their masters but not clever enough to ask the right questions. You have virtue signalling privileged liberals on one hand and bigoted nazis on the other, and it often feels like the rest of us are living on small islands filled with those groups and unable to connect with each other and cooperate so we can have a shot at molding this society we are all stuck in together to better reflect our worldviews. Sorry for the rant, but it had to come out somewhere and the infinite void of KZbin under the banner of one of my generations greatest sociologists (seriously, f.d. Is the sociology GOAT as far as I’m concerned) is as good a place as any, and better’n some. So if nothing else here gets read, the thing I’d like you to take away is that f.d. is a hero and everyone would be looking up to him if they knew what was what. One love, keep struggling, and know you’re not alone even when it feels like way; if common sense were good sense it wouldn’t be so common.

9:55 I think what he's saying is "Paracelsian corpse phenomenon". Paracelsian means following the theories of Paracelsus, a 16th century Swiss physician who was, objectively, a loud man. I don't know the full context of the clip, but he's probably referring to the period of time when mummified bodies were used as medicine, which isn't uniquely a Paracelsian phenomenon. Nobody waited for Paracelsus to tell them to eat mummy. People like to throw Paracelsus' name around for the prestige. Or he could be referring to Paracelsus' request that his dead body be quartered and buried in manure so fermentation (a process given great significance in his theories) caused the parts to grow back together as if on their way to resurrection. They should have really explained this better. I don't blame you for being confused.

It's not really confirmed by anyone who exactly started the stonewall riot, either Marsha P Johnson, Stormé DeLarverie or Silvia Riviera. We love to mythologize a singular person but not even the people who were there know for sure what "one" person started it. I know you said it as a little aside, but I feel it's relevant to mention that Hatshepsut is debately considered FTM -or otherwise queer in some way- because despite Hatshepsut's assigned gender being well known Hatshepsut still insisted on being depicted as a male pharaoh in art, with a false beard, men's clothing and no breasts. This could've also been attributed to cultural norms like the pharoah being seen as a vessel of a male god, the false beard being seen as a sign of royalty, but it's something to bring up in reference to queerphobia and narratives that try to wash the queer out of black history. Also just for random trivia's sake Akhenaten was a very visibly intersex pharaoh who's also important to queer history and unfairly ignored, who also supports the point you were making in that aside. Idk if you knew about any of that but it seems like it'd be interesting to you if you hadn't, if you have just ignore me.

I will say that I spent 20 years in the military 15 + special warfare. Educated, travelled the world, now completing a career with the federal government. I would say 90% of the time I’m usually the only black person in a space, the only black person apart of the unit, or team. For the past ten years whenever we are engaged in guy talk or locker room talk I’ve been asked the question many different occasions What the FK is going on with black guys? What has happened? All you see is feminine black males. So it’s not just heterosexual black men saying this. Also in the early 90s black women consistently complained about the down low culture becoming a problem on every form of media that existed at the time. My theory is mass incarceration. Prison culture with the help of hip hop has become mainstream in the black community. White t shirts and sagging is not all that has spilled over from prison life. All of the acquired tastes have been adapted as well. Prison just as the military is a culture. Most of the brothers I know in my city outside of the military have spent significant time incarcerated. As a result most of the black neighborhoods operate under the same codes and principles as prison and are very dangerous. Also I think as a result we view the things that may be forced upon you in prison as the primary introduction into that particular lifestyle.

I personally think it's less about empathy and more about being forced to confront the issue in a personal way, in a way that feels real. When you hear about something on the news it just feels less real than having to deal with it in person, and people tend to create a narrative based on what they already know and believe. its like white feminists (not feminists who are white). They both show their hand in that their real agenda is to restructure social hierarchies so that they are at the top instead but everyone else is supporting them rather than eliminating the system all together.

and not only are their motivations antithetical to the greater social movements they call themselves following, its like they interpretted them as opportunities for a power grab instead of redistribution of power to groups that have been disempowered by the current social systems that these social movements *actually* represent.

Growing up Latino in a Mexican family there's a lot of patriarchal things ingrained into us that is so hard to get people to disengage from. And now having a son who's 5 and a daughter on the way I really have to wrestle with how I want to raise them. How similar I want their experiences to be. How to prepare them for how the world is going to see them and then how they move through that to not falling into the traps I did growing up. Not letting certain standards define who you are and what your interests should be. A lot of emotions I want them to be able to express that my generation was taught to suppress.

My realization to a lot of this was when my daughter was born and I had to reckon with how unkind this world is to black women and how I have participated in that. @@SCHRODINGERS_WHORE it's not a lack of confidence. It's an acknowledgement of larger forces at play. How do dismantle socetial messaging about Black women? How do I touch the other intangibles? I could kill the world if she were hurt like you suggest but that would be a reaction at best and not preventative or protective. I'm acknowledging that there are forces, concepts, and culture at play that I cannot attack or defend physically and they are great. I was a fan of Tariq Nasheed, Umar Johnson, and all of those hoteps 8+ years ago when I was 14 - 16. I was a young man angry at white supremacy and racial capitalism who tried to find a language for what I was feeling and how I felt. I ate up all their queerphobic trash and toxic patriarchal messages. Later on, I was so blessed to have met folks coming into young adulthood that challenged me and equipped me to critically think about the systems and environment around me, and helped me develop a language so I can understand what's going on. You have to love all black folks if you claim black power else you're a hypocrite and might as well be an agent. Thank you for this video.
