Weekend # 2 of watching trying to lure in a old 7 point buck. After over 5 hours in a blind, I give up the bow shot and take this buck at 280 yards with a 30-06.

Thanks for the comments. Scope is a 20+ year old Bushnell Banner, 3x9 I think. Cheap scope, but has held it's zero all those years. 25 years to be exact...father gave me the gun when I was 18, and I'm 43 now! I still have one box (of 3) shells he gave me...price tag is $6.99.

MrCurdog92 you are 51 now, do you still use the gun? If so, that’s cool

This midday whitetail behavior is just so fundamentally different from the blacktail I hunt in the Puget Sound region. Nice shot. My only critique is that, even in the PNW - where most shots will be within 100yds (and many much less than that - this year's buck was 10 yds, last year's was 15), it is common practice to zero in at 200 yds in order to take better of advantage of the full distance of the MPBR range of typical hunting cartridges.

Nice buck for sure, good shot. Tip: know what your rifle does BEFORE going out in the field. Technology is a good thing but nothing beats good old fashioned practice and knowledge. From those two things comes all the confidence in the world pard. 30/06 is a great choice for just about anything we can hunt in the US and doesn't cost a fortune to shoot either. Ballistics are excellent in most bullet weights too, doesn't get much better for an all around hunting rifle. That buck went down in good order. I love the old: "BOOM/FLOP" scenario.

Great Job and way to be patient. Most all of your ammunition boxes list bullet drop tables on the box. It will vary with the the of grain you are using.

30-06 doesn't have much drop at 300 yds
