Well that was interesting. I have a 124 and the Esee. I had a 124 and a Swiss Champ on my first camping trip out of Canada, across the USA to the bottom of Mexico back in the 80's. I'm a retired Carpenter and I don't push tools to their limits. If I have a hollow ground knife I'm not going to try and split wood with it. For me every knife has a different purpose. Example I have 22 hammers one for every size nail whereas my friend has one hammer for every nail that exists. He's also the friend that I don't loan tools to, ha.

That buck with the hollow grind is why it gives troubles trying to Batton. Even Esee with their full flat will sometimes bog down as well. Part of the reason why I love a mid to high sabre grind. They split alot better

Totally agree with this statement it's all down to the grind in my experience. & the heat treat of the steel. I've got a buck 124 & for wot it is I actually think its a great knife & would not hesitate taking it out with me for bushcraft for a weekend or more. & really one should use the correct tool for the right job

I was impressed most that the buck held up with the “weaker” of these tangs, and also keeping an edge without rolls 👍🏼 makes me miss my kalinga even more

I tried splitting wood with knives, my hatch or machete seems to work better. My chain saws, eats everything. Right tool for the right job. Knives cut, dont abuse them. Btw i always liked bucks, the handles are comfortable. It will matter if you need to grip it for awhile.

Interesting results. The Buck is definitely at a disadvantage with its hollow grind for doing really hard use/abusive tasks like chopping and batoning through knot filled logs. If I had to use my Buck 124 to baton or chop, I would avoid going directly through knots as best I could. However, that Benchmade really impressed me though. I may have to get me one of those. Thanks for this video and Cheers!

I agree that the buck is at a disadvantage. That’s why if they replaced the hollow grind with a flat like the benchmade it would be excellent. Even with the 420hc. Even better with 3v lol

Great video and comparison of those three knives. That Benchmade really surprised me as it looks like a more tactical knife than a survival type knife. What is the steel type...d2? Thanks for the great review and testing. 🗡️👍🔪

When you chop near an end or other cut, chips can release so it’s easier

The buck being hollow grind. The chance of chipping out is very real. Especially trying to twist a notch out. But the Esse and BM are almost bulletproof

Chances of the buck chipping compared to the other 2 yes as its a hollow grind but the 124 was designed as a traditional hunting knife which is wot it excells at but they made it full tang so you could also do basic camp chores with it & does it very well. I've had mine years & used it for everything. But if I wanted to baton through a 6 inch thick log then I would chose something else designed for that task. There's no such thing as a do all knife but the 124 does hold its own very well doing everything else. The boss heat treat buck uses is superb but it don't mean it won't break or chip that's down to the user & the job the user decides to do with it.

Very good presentation. But, I wouldn't use a Saber Hollow Ground Blade for that; the Buck is a Hunter, not so much a Wood Crafter... It has a grind that's meant for cutting and skinning game. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
