That was my favorite part. God gave every human/creature 6 primal instincts: Hunt, Gather, Defend, Protect, Migrate, & Procreate. Ol "Coondog" was just practicing the "Defend & Protect" instincts. For those of you who do not see the difference between "Defend" and "Protect," well... the "looking around" and making a semi-circle is his practice for "Defending." When he urinated in the semi-circle, well... that's the "Protect" aspect.

That is one gorgeous buck. Seeing things like this is why I love hunting. I never appreciated nature until I sat in a treestand and observed. I no longer measure the success of my hunts based on if I harvested a deer or not. I measure it based on what I see and feel. I went hunting a couple weeks ago and saw a black bear for the first time that was HUGE. Then I saw a porcupine waddling around. Seeing both made my entire trip.

Jim was awesome. My dad worked at an ABC affiliate station that carried Wild Kingdom and Jim came a few times in the early 80’s when Marlin Perkins was still the host. He always brought animals, so it was a big deal for the kids of the employees when he showed up. My best memory was when he walked in with a wolf on a leash. A WOLF. It was a huge lanky canine with piercing eyes. My dad was 6’4 but Jim was at least an inch maybe two taller. They seemed like giants standing there with that big wolf... Of all the tv and movie stars I’ve ever met, only Jim Fowler and Lorne Greene had me “starstruck”. Lorne was the Commander of the Battlestar Galactica, and of course had been Ben Cartwright on Bonanza in syndication. Ok, I was also starstruck by Jenna Jameson when she said Hi and asked some questions while I was paddleboarding past her house in Huntington Beach. I didn’t know it was her until Tito Ortiz walked out to say something to her, at which point I became a stuttering idiot...

My apartment complex at the edge of town has a courtyard and a fence separating us from the barbecue ribs restaurant next door. Between the both buildings operating on the property, we have 2 dumpsters at opposite ends of it. We don't get deer but we have a hoard of ~19 raccoons and 3.5 bears who come to compete for the chance at garbage to eat. The smaller furballs also fight among each other, as do bears go head to head. But they always get into it with each other--even when the restaurant locks their dumpster during business hours and no trash can be gotten. We always lock our dumpster. But wild animals will always try. They always fight.

I have deer, mostly they are sweet and appreciative for the corn, except for one big buck. He does not like me, or my cats, or any of the other males. It took a few times yelling, swinging a 2x4 and even a few bumps to establish I was the boss. Thankfully, the cats knew him and stayed away. Over time the other deer realized I was not going after them and downright appreciated me walking outside to drop some corn. Big buck stands off now, up on a hill sulking while the other deer eat “his” corn. When they are done I go back inside and he comes down, most likely cussing me. He has learned the squeak on my door means go away, but the other deer learned it means snack time. I admire him. He’s beautiful.

Then i threw rocks, then i used a sling shot with rocks, finally I built a damn "spear" out of a bit of metal conduit with a cork and a small nail (i didnt want to kill him just sting him) and when i hit him with that i figured he was done for good- heck no!
