Disagree with your style comments. I’ve thought the car attractive since its release. The interior is comfortable and made with high end materials that have stood the test of time and 156,000 miles. And we put our 3 and 12 year olds in the back all the time…for short trips. The SC430 is quick but not fast, unique but not glitzy and comfortable but not dull.

Glad to see u here mate...So many untrue comments on the car like the wood etc. I use mine as a 4 seater all the time 🤷‍♂️😁 mine has 155,000 miles on it and it drives better than my brand-new Mercedes...again 6.4 secs is wrong lol so many magazines have tested them at 5.8 secs..I have beaten cars that do 60 in 6 secs so many times. Again the power is between 288bhp to 305BHP depending on age and torque goes up to 325lb-ft 🤦‍♂️ such a bad review lol the styling is not bad if u make a few little tweaks which I have done and it looks like a newer car to the point it gets stopped at petrol stations for a chat

Everything works as it should and couldn't ask for anything more or less. The sc430 is still a head-turner and the compliment never stops coming each i pull it off from my garage.!

The following is from a respected SC430 owner on facebook who asked me to putit up here Some comments answered:- "the mirrors stick out" well how else would you see behind, name a car where the mirrors don't stick out. "Fake wood" it is in fact real wood stuck to plastic to make it durable. "tip run car" a comment like that tells me your not acting stupid.... This car was not designed to do that job, review a Volvo estate or a transit van for that. "Small inside" go to speck savers. "dated infotainment" Well it was designed when you were still in your dads balls. What are you 17 18? "tape player" so what? "dash top not the same colour as the rest of the interior" its to defuse the light so you can see where your going. IT IS NOT A GT. This car looks well abused, the leather bit is the only one iv ever seen fall off yet you say they like to fall off. Both the little boys in this video seem to set out to take the micky before they started. The seats in the back is to dodge the US laws, cheaper to insure as a 4 seater, cleaver marketing from Lexus as these cars were aimed at the American market. You finding this car big lol well you would after your boy racer hatch back. As for looking at your "merch" I take it you mean merchandise? learn the language. I'm hated on this group for speaking my mind but people like you make my blood boil. Go buy a Vauxhall.

Hi there, nameless respected SC430 owner from Facebook! Thank you for your comments, I hope you allow me the chance to respond - after all, we are all entitled to our own opinions! In comparison to the cabin of the car, which tapers in quite sharply from the sides, the mirrors do stick out quite a lot - when coupled with the large haunches of the car, they look odd. I am, of course, well aware that wing mirrors do have to stick out, I just believe that these particular ones could have been better designed. A real-wood veneer stuck onto plastic and then doused in a resin coating loses the “wooden” properties it had and feels quite cheap, in my opinion. With regards to the car being used for a tip run, it is a quite feasible scenario that is often something people consider when buying a car - practicality is important. This car was not designed to be tip-run-practical (a fact of which I am well aware,) but nonetheless it is a point worth mentioning. “Small inside”? I believe I said it feels quite small, and this is because in comparison to the large dimensions of the car, the cabin is small. (And, just an FYI, I prefer Boots Opticians to Specsavers 😉). Of course a vehicle designed around the turn of the millennium will have dated infotainment when reviewed in 2021, but I am reviewing the car as a used purchase, not a new vehicle, so the system is outdated. Additionally, I am 23, so it is likely that the car was mainly designed in my infancy. CDs were available globally from 1983, so a luxury car released post-2000 with a tape deck as standard was a little silly. I am aware that a darker dash can help absorb light to aid visibility, but I was making a point about how it clashed with the rest of the interior. I know not everything you read on the internet is true, though given a quick search of multiple websites suggest the car is a grand tourer, I’ll leave that one up to you to argue. This car is admittedly not in the best shape but having a popper at either end of the seatbelt-retaining leather strap is poor design. Your attachments not detaching does not mean this might be an issue - equally this one coming off did not lead me to imply they all would. Irrespective of US laws and insurance policies, putting such unusable seats in the back of a small cabin was a poor design choice - making the cabin more of a coupé and increasing rear leg room would have been better, and probably improved the styling, too. Seeing the bulbous bonnet in front of you does, indeed, make the car feel large, and at 4.5 metres long it’s hardly compact (admittedly not massive, but given it only really seats two people, it’s a pretty poor use of space). Strangely enough, “merch” is a widely accepted (albeit informal) abbreviation of merchandise, so you were clearly able to understand what I was saying. I also find you suggesting I “learn the language” ironic given how poorly written your comments thus far have been. The joy of the internet is everyone can say what they want, though car owners can often be very defensive about their own cars and fail to see what pretty large flaws they have. Strangely enough I did buy a Vauxhall over two years ago, and I don’t think it’s that great. I wouldn’t say my review of the SC430 was overly negative: like every car, it has its issues, but my takeaway was it was a pretty compelling package, though I’ll forgive you for missing that through your defensive blinkers. Your feedback was gratefully received and will be considered in all future SC430 videos. I hope you have a good evening. 😊

A car ahead of its time. If you want a classic you look for several things. Reliable, rare, unique design, build quality and an awesome engine and gearbox. Tick on all of those and it will be a classic. There are so many great features in this car its greatness is guaranteed. Everyone knows you do not buy one of these for the legless back seats so why make a big deal about it. For those who know its a luxury storage area when the boot is full of roof. As a GT it must be silky smooth with a normally aspirated V8. The engine in this car is so good it will last you a million kms if well treated.

This might shock you but the reason a Lamborghini Countach or Ferrari Dayton are classics is not because of reliability. The SC430 isn't rare, they made over 72,000 of them. Just because a design is unique doesn't mean it will come to be universally revered, no one is paying more for a Fiat Multipla or Nissan S-Cargo. Again build quality is in no way a prerequisite to being a classic, if you change gears too quickly in a Ferrari Daytona before it's warmed up the gearbox explodes, and yet it's an incredibly desirable car. Also a GT car should have a big usable boot, that's sort of the point, it's something both Mercedes and Jaguar got right in the same era and both of their cars are far more likely to gain classic status.

I drive this car since 12 years (the best car I ever had) and so I might be a bit biased - but there are so many mistakes in the video, it is incredible. For example, the wooden Interior is no fake!! It is super expensive wood :-) :-) If the car looks for you like inflated is a matter of taste - I love the design. But I would have definitely washed a car before making a video.

A little more info about the rear seats. The headrests have steel hoops in them which are there to provide protection in case of a rollover. That’s also why they are very upright.

I quite enjoyed this review from Jasper but a bit of feedback if I may. It's very easy to fall into the trap of condemning the car you're testing if it's not one that appeals to you or one you see the point in. I speak from experience in that regard. Also rather than (albeit correctly) pointing out how dated some parts of it are, try to instead highlight how it may still appeal to people in the present day. I personally enjoy reviews of old cars more when they aren't compared to modern day cars. You still made some good points though and I look forward to more.

The wood in the SC 430 is real. The top of the dash is black, as all cars should be, to reduce reflections in the windshield. The rear seat was added to change its category from sports car to sporty car to reduce the insurance rate. I don’t know why you’d review this beautiful car, with your attitude. Do you think criticizing someone els’s design elevates you in some way? I’ve had one for 21 years, and LOVE it!

I own an 04 SC, and it has been a terrific car. I agree with Beate H. that you come across as a bit mean-spirited, ignorant and biased. The wood in the SC was designed and created by Yamaha Pianos of Japan - it's real - it's not a veneer. The SC also had the highest resale value of ANY car during its production years per KBB. Lexus referred to it as "The Crown Jewel of Lexus." Some call the SC a baby Bentley. Maybe you'll do better with your next video if you bother doing some research and speak with some owners about their cars. Though, I won't be watching...

Hi Wayne, thanks for the feedback. Not sure if you missed it but I did actually say that the car is a pretty good all-round package. The only thing I was quite critical of really was the styling, though this is entirely subjective and, given you own one, I imagine you are biased in favour of it. Yamaha did make the real wood *veneer* (admittedly an error where I called it fake), though it's not overly real-feeling given how much lacquer has been put over the thin layer of veneer. Resale values may well have been strong years ago but now in 2021 these cars are not worth much at all. Some people may have called it a baby Bentley, but others have called it hideous. It does drive very well and is very smooth, but even in comparison to similar cars at the time it wasn't overly compelling - now used prices are so low it is more attractive. I do hope future videos are more to your taste (I imagine they will be, because I won't potentially have negative points to make about a car you own), and before filming I do always perform research and discuss the cars with their owners. If you do want to keep watching that would be great, though if you don't I thInk I'll manage to cope without your viewing 😉

Jasper the styling in large part was dictated by the exquisite aerodynamics of the car with a drag coefficient of just .30 you can actually carry on a conversation in the car while cruising at 65 MPH. I think the car is beautiful, it functions as a car should unlike the Brits Jaguars which were all style and poor quality and performance. Car "pundits" like to trash Toyota styling as stodgy, but they are the most reliable cars on the market. Forgive me but I will take a car that is dependable, comfortable and easily runs for 300,000 miles.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I’m afraid that a low drag coefficient does not equal good looks. You can have conversations at speed in many cars in this class, so not sure that’s something to boast about. Weird you admit that Jags have style and performance but frame it as a negative? I thought those would be two quite important aspects in the luxury sports car market. And yes, the build quality is never going to compete with Lexus, but the SC430 has all the charisma of Andy Murray. I fear you might not know who that is as I suspect you’re from the US, but trust me, he’s the least exciting man on earth. Plus at this point in time, Jag were run by Ford. So you might want to point the quality finger in your own back yard before you do it to us. Forgive me but I will take a car that is joyful, doesn’t ride like a bouncy castle and goes like a stabbed rat.

Tata Motors has owned Jaguar since 2008 not Ford. I do not and did not frame style or performance as a negative but since cars are transportation and designed to get one from point A to point B, reliability in my humble opinion takes precedence over style, sports car handling or speed. Jags are rated as to have a life of between 125K miles and 150K with annual repairs estimated at $1,250 and that is for newer vintage Jaguars. The SC 430 has a life span 300K miles and annual repair costs of $475. Finally the SC 430 is not a sports car but a touring car designed for comfort and reliability and quality of materials. I have a friend here in the states that has owned both an XK8 and an SC 430. He also happens to be a fairly good mechanic. His take, the SC 430 looks a bit "pudgy" to him but it is very reliable, extremely quiet with the top up or down and the materials and finish are superb, the ride is a bit "squishy" as one would expect in a touring car. His XK8 he feels is " very sexy" and fast and at its best when parked in his garage. As he put it, it is difficult enjoying a long drive in a Jag with those annoying red light alarms that keep coning on. Be less dramatic in your video presentation. I'm sorry but I found your video over the top and needed to be tempered with a bit of Andy Murray. Just sayin'.

Both the XK8 (released 1996) and the XK (released 2006) were designed during Ford's tenure over Jaguar then. Really the whole point of being a car enthusiast is to see cars as more than "jUsT tRaNsPoRt" but sure, if having a reliable car is what gets you to sleep at night then you do you boo.

OWN 4, WANT MORE! I am fortunate to own 4 SC430s. Since I retired a few years ago the SC has become a passion for me. Mine are all gorgeous, always well maintained, and now pampered more than ever. They are: A -- 2002 with black--saddle colors and pie-plate hubs (which I love), 63k miles, dark walnut wood. B -- 2004 with white--ecru (ivory) colors and 5-spoke wheels, 53k miles, yellow birdseye maple wood (my favorite). C -- 2004, the coveted original Pebble Beach Edition, with azure (light blue)-ecru colors and 10-spoke Niche Essen wheels, ebony (black) wood, 97k miles. D -- 2007 with chardannay--camel colors and 5-spoke wheels, dark walnut wood, 68k miles. All purr like a kitten and roar like a lion! The plan is to drive them just enough to keep them in top condition. I think they are budding classics, and future prices are likely to generate a hefty ROI -- while having a blast along the way! (Englishmen Jeremy Clarkson and James May ... go pound sand! 😁)

The difference between the two is that laminate is a material other than wood with a coating made to look like wood, while veneer is actual, thin slice of wood that is pressed onto the surface of a furniture piece.

@@BuckleUpShow Not to belabor the point, but I was just watching a YT video about wood that is used in Rolls-Royce autos - the gentleman was illustrating the different 'veneers' that they offer. I think the confusion here is between solid wood and veneer. I don't believe anyone uses solid wood anymore, and haven't for decades, for multiple reasons that are two lengthy to discuss here.

Yes, there is in fact real wood used in Lexus' veneer here. We have had this fact pointed out by many commenters. However, due to the sheer amount of lacquer then placed over the wood, it loses any semblance of the original material. Therefore, to describe it as overly plasticky or fake is still an accurate representation of what it looks and feels like. There may well be sctual wood veneer in there, but it certainly doesn't look or feel like it.

This review is far too long and just doesn't quite sound right. It's not aged well, but it may not have been good to begin with. Even from the rear, it's not a nice viewing experience. This was a refreshing take on a great car! I really, actually, didn't watch more than just the part about how bad you think the car looks. I stopped, excited to join the fun and write a comment. Just bought a 2003 SC430 with 86k miles, paid peanuts. It's my 3rd classic Lexus in ownership for 16 years. Lexus is Toyota's Luxury EXport for the US. The duo of designers of the SC, Italian/Japanese found inspiration in the yachts of Southern France. Fluid aerodynamics are the basis of the styling and the efficiency of airflow, meaning a quiet and non hair raising experience with the hood down. It is a 2+2, so the rear perhaps for young grandchildren, but as a couples touring car, the rear bench is great for 3 suitcases (maybe a guitar too), along with a soft diving bag in the boot. Controls and comfort are pure Lexus and driving 8 hours a day are it's core value. Arrive rested and untwisted, unlike many other marques. I'll easily add another 100k and will enjoy every one of them. I will agree it is definitely Marmite. Oh, added bonus, this 2003 car with the legendary 3UZ-FE engine is ULEZ compliant, unlike the XK8.

You know, what people call fake teeth. The workmanship is not the best in the world. Have you heard of Rolls Royce or Bentley? Might want to check those guys out. The car is big. Very big. I have no problem driving through small villages and narrow country lanes , perhaps you need to go to Spec Savers . . . It has rear seats to keep insurance cost down as it’s classed as a 4 seater . I use rear seats to carry extra luggage and our dog , you can’t do that in a small 2 seater . Its design is quite unique , and , judging by the number of compliments the car gets when I park up , makes me proud to be an SC430 owner . Quality and class never go out of fashion . Oh , and Jasper , do grow up , your replies in the comments section are bordering on infantile for a so called Journalist . Not a good look . Since you mentio-, groaned about it not one, twice, but three times about the rear seats, they only put them there for insurance purposes. If they only had two seats then it would be classified as a sports car/coupe, which is 2x the insurance costs and therefore much higher MSRP.

We've had that pointed out to us several times over at this stage! Even if the wooden veneer is real, it's a very thin layer of wood mounted on a thick layer of plastic, coated with a thick layer of epoxy resin. Any semblance of real wood vanished when they did the lacquering process. :)

You just like to criticize do you? Show me the better car then this one please. Nothing comes even close to this car. Twenty years old, everything still functions like the Mercedes and BMW should in at least their first year. Quality of every part is just amazing. V8, hard top, 300hp. Those 'Top gear" bozos are probably collecting them all over the GB. I have 2003 with 140k miles and no issues. Also LS430 2001 with 330k miles and 2004 with 220k miles. I don't know any mechanics and I am not getting Christmas cards from them...Synthetic Oil change once or twice a year and that is all. And gasoline of course. I just need to build another garage and buy at least couple of more these SC430's.

If you could put the body on all whats under the SC I might agree! I bought one yesterday dark gray with camel int. It grew on me I guess? It’s one of the classiest Grand Touring cars on the road! Rides almost like my 04 LS, 14 yr old Grandson just saw it! He thinks it’s the coolest car! LOL, Kids got taste! 🙂
