You can see that Steve leaving set him back in his recovery. But now Sam has helped him see that he doesn't have to have Steve to be a good person, he can be someone beyond the person Steve expected him to be. I think they've both learned that throughout the series. Its also amazing how Sam went from wondering if they could save him at all, to inviting him into his family with open arms. Its exactly what Bucky needed.
