Thanks for a very enjoyable set of videos. That cable back hoe is probably pretty rare. It looks like it would take a good paint job, with some big time rust removal. You were blessed that the water getting in through the exhaust, and of course freezing, didn't burst your block, or cylinder walls. It is hard to beat the satisfaction of getting, first an old engine running again, and then restoring the other functions.

@@rudyschwab7709 No doubt. Men were tough and rugged back in those days. They worked hard and was proud of the work they did. The young people today wouldn't know what a "real days work" is. We had a RB17 at the brickworks where I worked, and I got the foreman to let me read up the handbook. Once you get the hang of the multi-function levers she's quite easy to operate. We had the machine set up as crowd shovel, working the quarry. Sorry to see her go eventually when the business closed down, but I bet she's still running now after forty years! Incidentally, releasing the main clutch, then pressing a pedal on the left, then re-engaging the clutch, enabled you to fast-track forwards. Main clutch must not be disengaged for more than three minutes or so. Disengage to start up,then release the lever forward to operate. Two levers to the left convert from operating to tracking, depending on their position. Slew lever becomes tracking lever, lever to the left of that is steering lever. Do not operate both together.

That was the worst part of driving a tracked machine, loading it on a low loader (Low boy) especially on a frosty morning, Cranes that run on rail tracks were even worse, and the ground was never level so we often took a run at it. Tracked machines gave me great training for when I bought a twin engine boat, she could 360 in her own length putting one forward and the other in reverse. Plus mooring was a doddle keeping the rudder amidships and then steering with the engines.

In 1971 I took my exam as a crane operator with a bucyrus in the Belgian army, I had to dig 11 meters of ditch in an hour. HEY! After watching your series for the 5th time I noticed something, your boom hoist clutch is stuck! Watch at 1:20 when you lock in the main clutch, that hook that’s on the boom hoist jumped and pulled tight, you need to investigate that, you don’t need that spinning and burning up the drum. Plus is robbing the rest of the machine of power, the engine dogged hard when you locked it in
