Bud Powell - "Sweet and Lovely" France (1960)

1st Festival Jazz d'Antibes Juan-les-Pins France July 13, 1960
Bud Playing a beautiful solo piano version of the standard "Sweet and Lovely". Based on the personnel from the rest of the concert, im guessing that bud is sitting in with Mingus's band, since bud was living in paris at this time!

It's nice. Very Monkesque. I saw Monk in 1965. Had to go twice. He forgot to show up the first time. He was soo stoned that the skin on his face was tight. What a performance!

They were best friends and they could imitate each other. Monk wrote tune called In Walked Bud recalling when he first met Bud at a session. Monk would stay at Buds house all day and night. He'd sleep there. They admired each other greatly

@@kajgenell you're right, I have noticed Bud often had a sideways (non symmetrical posture), aiming the body about 1/2-1 octave above middle C. We do not play jazz piano symmetrically (ie not much use of the bottom third of the piano in bebop), I think this posture helps the right hand relax in the mid register. He also looks to be very high on the seat although not sure.
