@anythingnew I'm lead to the belief that Buddhism is very much a religion that's open to interpretations and is pretty different to each individual and their own path. You don't have to be bound to every single word that a book, or person says is the right way to live your own life... that's how i feel! Of course, not everybody is the same though. If you don't like this religion you should research other ones, whichever one makes you feel you can express love in the easiest way

@anythingnew well see, the thing is that there are many different forms of Buddhism. This particular form of Buddhism--Pure Land Buddhism--was designed for the peasants in China who were always working and had no time to meditate, or go to the temples, etc. It was a way to help these average, not-so-smart peasants cultivate the dharma and good actions and thoughts as well. For the most part, branches like Theravada & Zen often rely on "self-power", as opposed to "other-power". Don't give up!

@anythingnew Yeah, man. This is just one of many many branches of Buddhism. I encourage you to keep that in mind. Different forms of Buddhism were tailored to the needs of the people at the time. Theravada and Zen are well-known for their "self-salvation" way. I myself practice Zen, and we don't rely on Amitabha at all!

Zen is not about self salvation that may be in wester secular zen, read three pillars of zen yasutsani roshi nevers speak of self salvation though he refers on non egoistic merits for achieving life on heavens or having sufficient knowledge an all 6 realms

Nichiren is not a buddhist religion partition is a philosophy set up by an ambitious monk, in nichiren all themes discussed on sutras are ignored

@anythingnew I don't believe that to be true. I see the Buddha as being a figurehead, an ideal of sorts of which to be attained. Before him, there was only Hinduism, so he was considered a perfect example of his own following. You have to find your own way to enlightenment
