If you are looking for a day outing from Mysore, you can plan your visit to Dzongkar Choede Monastery near Hunsur. Its about 57kms from Mysore and about 12kms from Hunsur town.
Dzongkar Choede Monastery is a Tibetian monastery and settlement on the way to coorg, near Hunsur. You will have to take a left on the SH86 to reach here form the Main Hunsur city. It will take you about 20 mins to reach here form Hunsur
With the help of Dalai Lama and Government of India, this tibetian settlement was established in 1971.
Timings of Puja : 5 AM to 6 AM and 5PM to 6PM
No parking charges
No entry fee
This is an active cultural center open to everyone. They have monastic study programs that are Dzongkar Choede’s unique heritage: They have courses like
- Tibetan monastic chanting
- Tibetan monastic ritual mask-dance,
- the art of butter sculpture,
- sand mandala
The monastery also runs a small school for the young monks providing modern education. There is also a small traditional Tibetan painting class and traditional incense-making centre to preserve and promote Traditional Tibetan art and also to offer the job opportunity to young unemployed Tibetans.
