I can't believe it took me 10 years to stumble across this. My dad raised me on Buddy Guy and similar music, and I lived in a part of Japan known for shamisen music. This is fantastic.

im discovering today! im living in Japan and play blues and play some shamisen....I was thinking play the shamisen without the bashi was a blasphemy......I only tried at home with a guitar pick and sounds wonderful, incredible!

Japan has managed to imprint some of its cultural identity onto wester/European culture like no other asian country. While a lot of western cultural import has changed Japanese life, it still has a distinctly different makeup without being artificial. - I think it has been a Japanese tradition to adapt and assimilate outside influence much easier than China for example. Chinese tradition has been mostly eradicated and resembles a facade, a bad carbon copy if you will, at the moment. The unhealthy competitive industrial mindset combined with an authoritarian rule destroys the finer nuances of cultural life and creates a dystopian monoculture that leaves little place for (personal) growth. - Maybe Japan has only narrowly escaped that fate by loosing in WW2? It had to reflect on a lot of political and cultural staples. But unlike Germany, Japan has maintained a self-appreciation and patriotism that Germany had lost. - I think culture is worth preserving a well as accepting change. There may be a balance in preservation and exchange that i can not really grasp. *In the end, i am happy that i can watch videos like the above, where culture clashes in a good way* 😛
One of the best jams on YT, thanks guys for bringing back this amazing memory.
