Just finished listening to "That'll be the Day", and the lead singer sounds a lot like Buddy Holly, though it's not Buddy of course. Thanks for these clips!

They should lower "Buddy's" mic a a little. It makes him look shorter because his is face is so covered up. He sounds great.

I'm real late to the party here, but I perform with that same microphone type. It's authentic to the era but the sweet spot is right in the middle such as shown here. As a result, it hides your face a bit more than modern microphones. You *can* lean it towards the audience a little bit which helps a little bit, but that's not exactly authentic. This performer is using the microphone as it is meant to be used.

You can't please everyone but tribute bands keeps music from days gone by going if everyone did their own thing music from the past would just be forgotten.
