Excellent playing on this chart Joe! Wonderful left hand feel and very musical. This is the way Big Band drumming should be,which is a lost art today. Keep on swinging my man!

It`s very rare today for a drummer to lead a swinging Big Band because of all the work it takes to put one together. But I do want to keep this Big Band music alive today for people who have never heard a Big Band in person. I get so many young people who say when they see my Big Band for the first time,they become fans of this music and I keep seeing them come back which is a great feeling for me. Thanks to drummers like Joe Nocella who want to play this music and he does a great job of playing this chart,more drummers will want to learn this style of drumming and be better players because of it.

@@KenLoomer I wish I could. When I was younger, I played in rock bands, later worship teams. I took a few lessons at Roselle Music in 1988, from Les DeMerle, who said I played like "an LA studio musician". Arthritis and several age-related issues are cramping my style, and destroying my desire to look into jazz drumming. At least I can enjoy greats like Joe Nocella. By the way, I found you, Joe, by searching "Buddy Rich Drum Cover".

Been watching your vids for years. That’s the best Buddy Rich cover I’ve ever seen, and for this tune, one of my faves. Your finger control is awesome. Got to see Buddy live many times, especially in nightclubs in Philly. Though he always said ‘Any requests, forget ‘em, its my band, I’ll play what I want!” Since I had all his albums, I’d yell out something from his book and he’d always do it. First one I asked for was Love For Sale, after that up tempo thing I asked for Groovin’ Hard and he did them both. I always get a kick out of some of the knot heads that mentioned other drummers as better. Hope you’re still playing. Take care.

Thanks for watching Joe. I saw Buddy a few times myself. The last time I saw him was at beach club in Sea Bright, NJ. The whole band was in tee-shirts & shorts. Buddy was great as usual. I've been playing out more now than in the past few yrs. which is why I haven't been doing too many videos. I'll get back to it soon. Thanks & stay well...

Great job! Those 16ths during the drum break at that tempo are not easy to pull off. Just wish there was a music minus one version as it is just impossible to pull Buddy's drums down enough so you don't hear them.
@JoeNocella3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That single stroke roll is definitely not easy to play. I barely make it. It's not humanly possible to play it cleanly the way Buddy did. For Buddy, it was right in his wheel house. Even Dave Weckl resorted to double strokes when he played this with the Buddy Rich Big Band a few yrs ago at Ronnie Scott's. I was curious to see if he would go for the singles and he didn't.
@alkohn18443 жыл бұрын
@@JoeNocella I've been able to do it at the original tempo marking of 200bpm but as you know Buddy's tempo started out at around 220 and through the years increased to upwards of 240bpm and he still pulled them off. There will never be another like him. You did a great job considering you had to play on top of the original track.

I recently played that song several times working thru the kicks, pushes nuances. That kind of drumming almost a lost art. It's hard as hell and I've been playing all types of music since I was a kid including big band jazz. Surprisingly when the song opens up big and rich and yourself do that left hand shuffle deal took me a while. Almost like learning the Rosanna Purdie shuffle just cool. Great job one of best I've heard other than Rich himself. Very cool.

im playing this chart in my jazz band next month! sounds awesome! any advice on exercises that i could work on? i really want to have the left hand as independent as i can, and you do an amazing job at that. Advice would help a lot!
@JoeNocella8 жыл бұрын
+angel ramos Thanks. I would practice uptempo swing and play different patterns with your left hand. If you have Ted Reed's Syncopation, play the exercises with your left hand against the right hand swing pattern. I recently bought John Riley's "The Art of Bop Drumming". For under $20, it's definitely worth the price. It will definitely help with your swing playing. Also, Jim Chapin's book is very good.Go to: www.amazon.com/Advanced-Techniques-Modern-Drummer-Independence/dp/0757995403/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1458744393&sr=1-1&keywords=jim+chapin+drummer Look Inside and practice the first few pages as fast as you can. Good luck.
