They absolutely have. In his day his skill and influence made him stand out so hard compared to everyone else but in the modern era he’d be just another great drummer, not the absolute pinnacle of drumming ability. It’s the same with a lot of things people like the nostalgia and influence that their heroes have, no one likes to admit that there’s guys sitting in front of a camera on KZbin at the same level as their old heroes

Buddy rich was dead wrong about trad being better. It’s all up to preference both can essentially achieve the same results
@liamdempsey7072
@liamdempsey7072 7 ай бұрын
There’s a couple reasons why for buddy’s playing style, it was arguably better. Buddy often played large kits with big floor toms, having the stick at that 35* ish angle to the wrist, gives you greater access to parts of the kit to your right side. Buddy’s signature single stroke roll was also heavily contributed to his ability to play traditional grip. I’d also argue holding the stick from beneath the shaft allows to for a more open tone as there is less tension on the wood. These are all signature elements of what made buddy so great.

@@liamdempsey7072 Nobody plays traditional because it's "better". They only play that way because it was how they were taught, and they got used to it. The only reason it was invented was because it used to be necessary, not for any practical reasons with regard to playing. It used to be tradition to write on papyrus with carved reeds. Just because there are people who did it well doesn't mean it was better or makes any sense today.
@liamdempsey7072
@liamdempsey7072 6 ай бұрын
@@travisjohnson7065 I’ve just listed multiple reasons why it’s different. And for those reasons it is subjectively better. I was taught match but learned trad because it makes me approach the kit differently. There is different language that comes to mind whilst holding the stick differently. What I’m saying is it ends up sounding different. And buddy wouldn’t be who he was without it.
@travisjohnson7065
@travisjohnson7065 6 ай бұрын
@@liamdempsey7072There are all sorts of ways you can approach the kit differently. You could mount the drums above you, tilt them down, and play them from below. That would be a different approach with a different feel and sound, but that doesn't make it better or change the fact that it's nonsensical. By the same logic, someone who got used to playing that way would say it is subjectively better, because it's what they are used to. Or they would say it is better because it sounds different, which it may or may not, but it's still just adapting your playing to something unnatural. With traditional, it's unnatural because of the reason it exists in the first place, out of necessity when playing a drum off to the side. Otherwise, nobody would have ever thought to play that way. If it was better, it would have come about on its own, not out of necessity.
@liamdempsey7072
@liamdempsey7072 6 ай бұрын
@@travisjohnson7065 yeah well I’m not sure the argument was if it is better or worse. Clearly both of capable. I just believe personally that the traditional grip is more applicable then you’d think. Actually in the same way that it was for marching snare. I believe the first iterations of the drum set seen in the early 1900s suit the style of traditional grip better then match. It was more important to have a strong right hand and a soft left. Comping on the snare you certainly are able to play more colourful notes with the left and a strong ride pulse on the right. Like I said in my other comment you have greater reach to the right of the kit also. Do I think you should play math metal traditional grip? Hell no.
@adam.august
@adam.august 2 ай бұрын
Can we just agree that they each have different purposes and applications and they're equal? Like traditional is perfect for jazz and bop if you wanna do snare comping, but match grip is better for funk and getting rim shots.

So I spent first 2 years of my time drumming playing matched as most do, picked up trad after seeking to learn from some of my hero’s. Never looked back. The benefits to having the hand below the stick are enormous. Playing from the snare to the floor Tom i was no longer having to rotate my core. Having a more flexible fulcrum in the left hand has allowed for greater dynamic use of the stick. It’s not always better. But it mostly is.
@doomentrnal5625

Ok first thing first they used traditional grip because they had a strap around there shoulder and the drum ended on the left side which was really uncomfortable for drummers so they used traditional to hold the stick better and later in the years the drum is in the center normally and they use a modern grip but people still use it because it just looks good. It doesn’t really matter which grip u chose

What a totally stupid comment. Sounds like a dried up, crusty, very insecure person. Plus gorillas are mainly vegetarian, and some also eat insects. Not gazelles. But I’ve heard they do get upset when someone suggests holding their sticks a different way… 🤔
@travisjohnson7065

Right, it's called traditional because that's the only reason it exists: tradition. The only reason it was invented was because it used to be necessary. Now it is unnecessary and nonsensical, and the only reason you or anyone else plays it is because you got used to the way you were taught. And the only reason your teachers taught you that way is because it was how they were taught. A long line of people who can't think for themselves.

A good drummer - maybe even great - but he sucked at drum history. The so-called traditional grip comes from field/military drumming where the drum is slung over a shoulder and tilted to one side. This made it almost impossible to use a matched grip with any facility. Buddy Rich thought everything he did was the right way - he was a pain in the ass to work with.
@brandoncaudill6864
@brandoncaudill6864 10 ай бұрын
While it's true traditional grip came from marching drums (which I'm sure Buddy knew) the inverse is true for the drum kit. The classic kit setup was designed around using traditional grip. So it's fair to think using traditional grip on the kit is the "right" way to do it, because that's what the kit was designed to accommodate. All that said, just use whichever grip you prefer (or reconfigure your kit so the snare is in the middle, which plenty of modern players do).

Traditional grip and matched grip have absolutely no benefits over each other. If your snare is mounted a certain way, it's just easier to play trad.
