The more they cut, the less efficient things get. Public servants don't WANT to stop doing things they know are important, and central government are very careful never to say what they think SHOULD be cut, so they can blame departments and local authorities for bad decisions and label them as resistant or playing politics. And that's right: what should be cut IS a political decision, and public sector shouldn't be making that decision. And they don't want to - that's not why they're there. But the political class provide only a facsimile of policy to keep things nice and vague to run as cover for themselves. By providing only a poor facsimile of policies and abdicating their responsibility for making detailed policy, they get to blame the people who are meant to be neutral for having to make the decision, and then when front line public sector workers run themselves into the ground trying to 'do more with less', they're then accused of being inefficient. And if they protest that their pay and conditions and pensions are not sufficient compensation for that treatment, suddenly they *all* (rather than vanishingly few now) have 'gold plated pensions' (handily distracting everyone else into being jealous of those lucky few civil servants instead of being very very angry that their own pensions are entirely inadequate and insisting they deserve better). And the public fall for it again and again. Public sector workers are not the public's enemy. Lies, obfuscation and abdication, if not straightforward dereliction, of political responsibility are.

@@Gary-le7dz New Labour copied conservative economics policies in their first term and enjoyed a booming global economy. The NHS has long been unproductive but there’s no incentive for the public sector to innovate because the unions will strike in protest over any job losses. I’d rather have a public private hybrid system like many European countries have. The conservatives have implemented austerity to reduce the budget deficit. I’d rather the deficit was cut further to achieve a budget surplus but labour opposed measures to cut the deficit. Debt also went up because of covid and infrastructure projects like HS2, those are capital investments which don’t fall under austerity as austerity is about cutting day to day spending. There’s no more money because Covid led to a surge in borrowing. The cost of servicing debt is going up thanks to inflation and a quarter of government debt is made up of index liked gilts. We can’t continue borrowing more money and no party has a serious plan to cut the deficit.
