The only thing I would add would be the Adventure Medical Kit .5 First Aid kit. It's about $23, and has everything in it you'd need with little to add to it other than your own personal meds you may need to take.

Really nice list. I think all excellent choices so its pretty much personal preference after that. One of the only things I'd change would be the REI Flash 55 pack. Its sub-$200 and even less on sale and I think its one of the best "works great for pretty much everyone" packs. Its my go to "I want to get started" or "I'm looking to upgrade..." recommendation. That and I've also started leaning toward wider pots vs the tall cup style. I think to someone starting, unless they know they'll be 100% boil water cooking, a wider pot gives them some more options. Works great for boiling water but also gives you more "I can bring random stuff from the kitchen" flexibility. Toaks makes a 900ml pot that's excellent at a good price. List like these are great resources but the main thing is , get out there. As long as you have the basics covered, you'll probably be ok to get started.

With some changes that I have written to REI about, I believe that the Flash 55 could compete well with cottage companies even with it being nylon. Yes, that pack is that good.

I think some people get caught up in the term "budget". If someone is wanting to get gear for backpacking long term, this is a great list. If someone isn't sure they want to go backpacking, then of course people may try cheaper stuff...or better yet, borrow gear from someone to see if the backpacking bug bites you. But we all have different opinions of "budget" due to our financial situations and commitment to backpacking.

Great video I would suggest the Lanshan 2 for the tent A market proven tent Full acceptance by campers and folk that know Slice at least $100 of the price of a sleeping bag Get a synthetic fill, much less finicky than down for beginners and way more resistant to wet and damp Well done discussing less expensive gear with no compromise in quality

I would upgrade the tent a bit. You can save almost a full pound with gossamer gear the two for about $125 more and can make up over half of that cost by getting the granite gear crown 2 pack on sale which it regularly is. And that saves another 9 ounces. So for roughly $40 ish dollars with the pack being on sale, you can save 1.5 pounds. I actually helped a buddy get that pack new for about $80 this year on sale so he could save that 1.5 pounds for free.

Cool set up for great value. When we have new customers looking to fully outfit we generally say around $1000 dollars. But to help out with that we rent packs, tents and sleeping pads.

This is a seriously great list of budget minded items! Emphasis on quality. I was thinking a grease pot, bamboo spoon and grocery store headlamp would save about $50, but your items will last a lot longer. The tricky thing about a “getting started” list is defining the theoretical person. This $1,000 list is really great if this person was definitely going to continue backpacking for multiple years. But I feel like most people getting started with backpacking are still deciding if they like it or not, which makes that $ sum harder to swallow. Too many variables for something like this though. 😂 At least this list is also really solid if they wind up just camping!

So many variables and options it can almost be paralyzing. I think sometimes “getting started” gets viewed from a cookie cutter standpoint. Which that isn’t always true. The way someone gets started is going to have many different approaches. A first time thru hiker will approach getting started differently than the weekend hiker exploring local trails near home. Always appreciate your sound comments on my videos! 👊🏻

Granite gear crown 3 60L is a great budget pack as well. They often go on sale and are very lightweight.

I personally struggle with the Granite Gear packs. They often feel like I’m strapped to a backboard anytime I’ve worn one.

I bought three slightly used (one still had tags on it) Osprey backpacks on ebay for about $300 for all of them. It took looking for a few months to find someone who used them only a few times. Bought a used (one time) Luxe Minipeak 2 for $80. Got a new Static V pad for $35 on sale. My kids bought their own sleeping pads. One bought a Static V. The other got a Neo Air. It’s not the best but we only hike for a few days a year. It works. Stove is a Jetboil Mighty Mo burner and a aluminum grease pot or a diy Caldera cone with a alcohol burner with a Trangia 27 pot.

Pretty good list IMO, but to get started you don't need a long titanium spoon (one from your kitchen will work just fine) and you could go with purification tablets and some empty soda bottles. Also - in the boy scouts we pretty much used tarps all the time when backpacking. Some rope and a plastic tarp don't cost much if you don't have it already but require some skill for setting up.

I agree and disagree. The spoon, sure that’s something you’ve already got. I guide new backpackers in the field a lot, and the common comment I get from students is that they want to feel secure and confident. Sleeping under a tarp doesn’t typically give people a lot of confidence that they are protected.

I also disagree with the filter. The tabs take awhile to work. If you run out of water you will be tempted at the next source to drink without treatment. And the tabs do have a cost. The concern bag is optional because it fits on the water bottles. For most everyone the filter is worth the cheap investment.

@@BackcountryExposure I did start by saying it's a pretty good list. My point really was that if you're new and don't know if hiking is for you then $1000 is a lot to find out if you like it. IMO a tarp can be a great option for groups with experienced leaders (like in the boy scouts) and below tree line. If you go out alone without experience then I totally agree that a tent probably is a better option.

Would be fun for there to be a 5 tier's of gear video series.. "Thrift/Outdoor Consignment Store", "Dirt Bag", "Budget" (this video), "Yeah, I go backpacking", and "Hyperlite Mountain Gear". Would really be able to highlight the difference between old, super cheap, reasonable, and addict levels of gear. Lots of people who recommend Consignment stores don't quite realize that decade old Gerry bags that weigh a brick, are covered in tears, are still being sold there for $200.

Here in Colorado Springs we have a few consignment stores where you can get some great deals on used gear. Also, Goodwill and Salvation Army stores routinely get named brand outdoor clothing on their racks. The pawn shops are a good place to check, you'd be surprised at what turns up there.

@@TheWillRogers oh, it is location dependant but check out those places. You need a synthetic shirt, base or mid layer? Goodwill. Need some shorts to hike in? Salvation Army. Pick up a hiking shirt from a consignment shop.

I've got all my gear second-hand . my tent ⛺️ i got on sale that is military second hand i checked it out for holes and where and tear and water proofed it myself once i bought it. The sleep system is definitely something to sort. i like to be pretty comfortable . I like to carry a pretty nice second-hand buck knife in a sheath . Just my personal preference i use it for cooking and have used it for lot's of different types of things.

Nice list of solid items. I'd probably start off with gear half the price and work my way up replacing items. It took me a while to finally pull the trigger on a $400 Garmin Inreach Mini 2 when my first big 3 combined was a lot less than that. That's definitely the most expensive single item I carry but everything opened up from there.

I'm seeing a lot of videos coming out on budget gear, which is a good thing. Nothing irks me more about "influencers" are the ones that make you think you have to spend a lot of $$$ to get on trail. In fact, most of them I see on Instagram are just posers but the uninformed think they're knowledgeable. Good list Devin, not too cheap but not breaking the bank. Hopefully there are some Christmas gift ideas in the video for people.

I’ve been guilty of sharing a good amount of expensive gear items. But lately I’ve really enjoyed widening the options back into items easier on the wallet.

@@BackcountryExposure Keep it up. I truly believe a show stopper for a lot of people is thinking you need to buy a bunch of expensive gear to backpack. I met a guy on the AT that was hiking with a Walmart backpack and sleeping bag.

$500 to start backpacking is crazy considering otzi the iceman made all his gear from grass, sticks and stones. And he could probably go further than any of us. It basically goes from bushcrafting to full blown overlanding

Seem like great gear for an entry level hiker! Lightweight, but not ultralight. Budget, but not cheap. Most likely fair quality, but not bullet proof. In short, a nice balance between weight, price and quality.

100% agree. Ive used the Paria recharge down to 13 degrees F and have slept warm. Love it. Only gripe about it is that its only 23 inches wide. Not a big deal if you dont move around at night.

Ha ha! Those gloves always get comments. Those exact gloves aren't made anymore. But the closest thing now are the Outdoor Designs Diablo Tec gloves. Which the ones im wearing are the Diablo GTT. The pants are the LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pants.

Ive been using the fire maple Polaris non remote version. Weight is a little more than the pocket rocket 2 but performance is closer to the deluxe maybe better

I almost caused a worker from REI when I explained that a "New Backpacker" should consider buying some items at Walmart. Her head exploded with disbelief that anyone would refuse to pay REI prices, then HATE backpacking and quit. Do your homework then buy what you need.

It’s hard when there are a lot of opinions tossed around on what you should get to get started. This video being one of those opinions. But yes, doing as much homework as you know how to do before buying is important. It’s also important to just get out there with your gear and use it. That’s how you’re going to learn what’s going to work or not work and how to better your experience.

Thanks! Ah the gloves… every time I wear them I get comments asking about them. They are unfortunately not available anymore. They were the Outdoor Designs Diablo GTT. The closest thing to them now is the Diablo Tec Softshell, also Outdoor Designs.

Those are a discontinued pair of Outdoor Designs Diablo GTT gloves. Closest thing to them now are the Outdoor Designs Diablo Tec gloves.

So does a full zipper on the outside of a pack deter anyone else? It just seems a little risky if that zipper would blow out. I'm set on my packs but I don't think I'd want that on a pack.

It for sure can be a fail point on the pack. But a lot of packs have the duffle style zipper opening to the body of the pack, and from what I've seen, rarely do they fail. But that shouldn't be a reason to not be cautious and be sure to take care of it. :)

I don’t really understand this list. There are better and lighter options for equivalent prices. The REI Flash 55 is lighter, carries exceptionally well, and is only $10 more when full price (and can often be found for 30% off!). The durston xmid is literally half the weight of the tent you selected for only a slight increase in price.

This list wasn’t meant to be gospel for “the best” gear at the price point. There are dozens of other options in all categories. My point was to share some of the options within the range of prices that people agree are budget friendly. I think it’s important to share a variety of options.

But to be honest, this list feels different just for different's sake, not because you're offering particularly great alternatives to otherwise really accessible and pretty well known options. Just my opinion, obviously. This video was just a miss for me. I love lots of your other videos!
