Dereks closing words at the end of the video... that's a real motivation speech. I replayed that 10 times... he's right, how many projects never start or finish just because someone can't afford to make it look or run like a car that's had 10's of thousands of dollars dumped into it. I know that's prevented me in the past every time, I didn't have the money so why start it?

Yes Derek's videos are great for helping someone get through some rough times. I'm going through rough times myself currently and there are times when an emotional lift me up is vital. In fact, his videos including some that are pretty old, and some videos from a few very select others where on KZbin, have been priceless and have been helping immensely with my healing and recovery for most of the last 3 months of hell, and I credit those select few channels with my progress on relearning how to walk again. (I made a phone holder that fits on my walker so I can watch and increase my determination to succeed at walking because being able to walk and stand is the only way I can get back to being able to work on a couple of car projects of mine.

My dad passed away about 5 years ago. He would have loved your channel. He grew up in the Depression and had learn how to fix things with whatever was available. He took pride in a grey 2wd Chevy that had some "weight reduction areas" that he "fixed" with grey duct tape and spray paint. He was also proud that the rims on the passenger side didn't match the rims on the driver side. He just liked driving his old pickup. Didn't care a bit about what anyone thought. He and my Mom grew up in North Dakota so I know all about "Uff-da", also! 😊

For anybody that plans to remove their headliner and hopefully replace it some day with a new one - each of those bows in the headliner have a unique position in the car. Most of the time, they aren't labeled where they go, so be sure to label each of them so that they go back in the right spot.

I think one of the biggest flaws was the overly long crankshaft limits it's potential somewhat, but if modern metalurgy could fix that, then you need to be able to design a car that can accomodate that long of an engine. That said, any car that has one is instantly cool.

You can always "unpatina" a car but you can't create real patina after it's been painted. I have an old F150 with a lot of surface rust. The plan is to scrub-pad it down then matte clear-coat. Maybe in a year or so I'll give it a new paint job.

@@boyracer3477 I think I would like the matte more tbh. That's definitely a great idea tho to keep the surface locked in until you decide.

Yes, loved the episode but not so much the patina. Would've preferred he removed/treated as much rust as was reasonable, applied some sort of color match paint to the larger bare metal areas, and then distressed it to a matching matte finish. Finally, apply his shine juice making the Packard look its age but with a well cared for luster.

I'm glad I found this channel, I sadly just inherited my dad's 2nd gen dakota and it wasn't the truck he had the longest but his last truck. I've been working on some of the rust underneath and learned some great tricks from here. It feels to much sometimes but it's sentimental to me. Keep up the amazing work!

If he actually created it yes, I just hope he hasn't just rebranded a generic product which is the most likely situation. Can't blame a fella but I do hate to see him selling out.

@@Teredifa I just don't think he's wired that way. Best scenario is he showed his mix to some chemists and told them what he wanted. I hear you though, I just think his morals are pretty solid. Time may prove me wring, but I hope not. I don't want to be watching "The TRUTH behind the criminal life of VICE GRIP GARAGE" someday on youtube. I would be sad.

I learned to be a shade tree mechanic from my dad. When he passed in 2001 I brought home a 65 Monterey convertible that was rough. The only saving grace was good floors and good trunk. Put in a good solid year of work and built a nice cruiser. Watching you do your Roadworthy Rescues reminds me of all the same tricks I used back then. Still have and drive the Merc to this day. God Bless you and your family and all the people you inspire.

My Dad's family had a 1948 Packard straight 8 that they purchased brand new and that car was an American version of a Rolls Royce when it came to fit, finish and engine smoothness. It was a beautiful and comfortable touring car, I still remember riding in it when I was only five years old.

Wish more car guys thought like you with your style here. Well done. Preserving patina the best way. Good reminding people; you don’t have to put a ton on money into an old car. It is often better as a survivor with the bumps and bruises that show individuality. And that is the stuff people notice. Allows more conversation, and there is no comparing of individuality 👍🏼

Derek thanks for the awesome content over the years brother! I showed this channel to my brother over Christmas, and he got so into it he's finally helping my dad with his '67 Chevelle. I spent a number of years wrenching with my dad where I could, but to hear my pops tell me with excitement my brother is getting into it too was really a joy to hear. My brother calls you the Bob Ross of auto channels, and I really think that sums you up. It's fun to watch, thanks and keep it up!
