Budget Day: What’s Inside?

FEDERAL BUDGET
Today is budget day, which means the government will announce how it plans to spend Australia's money. Yep, brace yourself for a whole lot of numbers, a whole lot of news reports, and whole lot of this guy, Australia's treasurer Jim Chalmers, whose job it is to create the budget. The budget is a plan outlining how the federal government is going to spend Australia's money on things like defence, education, health, welfare, and infrastructure. But it's on a huge scale. We're talking hundreds of billions of dollars that mainly come from taxes. While the full budget won't be released until a bit later tonight, we've got some idea of what's to come. Yeah, cost of living is front and centre this year with help for students, tax cuts, a drought fund to help farmers, and money to tackle the issue of violence against women already announced. We can also expect to see something else, a surplus for the second year in a row. A surplus means the government is making more money than it's spending, and paying off its debts, and this year's surplus is $9.3 billion. Lots of people are waiting to see who the big winners and losers are of this year's budget, but one thing's for sure, the government will be trying to keep as many people as happy as possible, especially with an election coming up next year.
BUNBURY TORNADO
People in Bunbury in Western Australia are starting to return to their homes after a freak tornado ripped through the area last week. The storm hit on Friday afternoon, damaging more than 200 homes and completely destroying at least nine. Now, locals are assessing the damage, and starting to clean up as much as possible before more bad weather heads their way on the weekend.

Yep Aussie Alex De Minaur has served his way through to the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters after beating Canadian Felix Auger-Alliasime. It was a rocky start for the Aussie after losing the first set. But it wasn't long before he slid back into rhythm to take the win. He'll now take on Stefanos Tsitispas in the next round.
JUNIOR WORLD SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP
Now to El Salvador, where Team Australia has won the ISA Junior World Surfing Championship! The team was made up of 12 young Aussie surfers who racked up a total of 7098 points, overtaking Hawaii to finish with gold. Meanwhile in the individuals, Dane Henry took out the under 18 boys division becoming the first Aussie to win the event in 15 years. While 15-year-old Ziggy Mackenzie won the under 16 girls comp.
SPEED GOLF
And finally to England, where things are getting speedy. Nope its not a marathon, this is the British Speed Golf Pairs Championships. Pairs share a ball, take turns hitting it, and aim for the lowest score and fastest time. This year the title was taken by Luke Bone and Luke Willett, setting an 'unofficial' world record for the fastest 18-hole Speedgolf round in just 37 minutes and 43 seconds

First up, to the creators of Chat GPT who've just released a new version of their AI chatbot that can actually chat! GPT-4o is what they're calling it, and it's capable of having a real time conversation with its users, you can even interrupt it mid-sentence and it'll have no problem carrying on the conversation.
APPLE AD
Now to Apple's new ad which has upset people online. It shows a bunch of musical instruments, cameras, and various other creative apparatus getting crushed by a hydraulic press, only to reveal an iPad. But some people reckon it reminds them of the fears a lot of creatives have at the moment, with their crafts being threatened by the rise of AI and technological advancements. Apple has said sorry for the ad, and that it wasn't the message they were going for.
VIRTUAL PORTAL
And finally, to a digital portal linking Dublin in Ireland with New York City in the US! Two sets of cameras and screens popped up late last week, connecting the cities which are separated by about 5000 kilometers of ocean and it's quickly become a social media phenomenon. From waving "goodmorning!" to people on your way to work to saying hello to old friends.
