Rustoleum profesional in the gallon cans mixed with acetone will spray on super smooth and shiny with even the cheapest $14 harbor freight gun. Painted 2 cars and 8 race cars with it. Paint,acetone,and gun will run you about $75. Looks as good as if id spent $400 at the auto paint store. Rustoleum comes in many colors.

If you add a little hardner from clearcoat base coat paint right into the black it helps it retain its shine

I have gotten by with throwing garbage bags over tires for years while painting with no taping required....just a wedge taken out for the suspension and its worked like a charm for anyone looking for a shortcut on taping off a car

When I was growing up my dad owned a body shop in Mid Missouri, My aunt and Uncle lived in Park Hills for 25 years or so btw, and being in the middle of Farm Country we painted ALOT of fam equipment and used alot of Tractor paint, I've used Tractor paint on probally 75 cars over the years, I;ve even mixed it and created custom colors, When my baby sister turned 16 I gave her a 62 Galaxie that I bought in a package deal from a Real Estate Auction and we painted it International White and after we painted the main body I throw a 1/2 quart of New Holland and almost a full quart of Case Red in the 1/3 ish gallon of White I had left and threw it in the paint shaker and created a custom purple and sprayed the Roof and painted a custom pinstripe down the side, 13 years later she still has it. I will say over the last 20 years or so Tractor Paint has came a LONG way.

@@DEADCARRESCUE I use the Majic Brand Paint, and just buy their Hardner and Thinner that's made for specifically for tractor paint, I also use a 5 part paint and 1.5 part thinner, it makes it spray better and you don't get alot of egg shell/orange peel look so you don't have to cut it as much before you buff. The good thing about the Majic brand is it it's a single stage paint so no clear coat needed.

@@Snailmailtrucker well she's 21 years younger than me and like I said I got it in a package deal from a Real Estate Auction, I had to buy all three cars, the 62 Galaxie, 76 Nova and a 41 Dodge pickup, and had already sold the 41 Dodge Truck for more than what I paid for all 3 so i had already gotten my money back on the deal and she needed a car and my dad already had the paint so all it all REALLY cost me was for the tune up kit, new fluids, brake shoes and brake fluid and that was 14 years ago so what? 100 bucks? maybe 125 bucks back then, I was good with that.

It great to see work done cheap. The big buck restorations look fantastic, but the owners then shy away from driving the cars for fear of chipping the paint or even getting caught in the rain. Cars are made to be driven. "Car Collectors" hoard up their favorite cars, many never to see the light of day again. It is nice to have the money to collect cars, but most of us "collect" the affordable cars and drive the hell out of them (like they were built to be used). They may have the exotic collectables, but we get the enjoyment of being able to drive ours. Great video, great car, great guys.

I applaud the job you did and all the effort that went into the job. I think it looks great. You will realize a night and day difference once yku buff her out. The car look even better than it already does! I have an old 1968 4 door Chevelle that i intend to do exactly the same thing you did. My old 68 will never be worth much, so reality dictates a paint job done on the cheap like you did. What always makes the difference is paying close attention to the prep details like you did. Detailed prep is exactly what i intend to do too. The end result will not like like a show car, but the car will never be worth a paint job like that so, like you did, I will paint it on the cheap, make it look better, and be proud of the outcome again, just like you guys have done. I would love to see how it looks once done and polished out.

I use about 30% acetone and 1-2 ounces of hardener per pot ! The hardener makes it a 2k product and you can clear coat right over it . Or let it dry a few days and clear coat it.

I used to paint with PPG and Dupont, but the stuff got too dang expensive. Here's what I'm doing from now on. I'm using epoxy primer as the basecoat and putting 30 dollar a gallon u-pol clear coat over it. You can get white, black, grey or red epoxy primer and once you clear coat it, nobody will ever know it's primer. Doing it this way, you sand and mask one time, spray the epoxy primer, then put the clear over the wet epoxy, and you got yorself an easy paint job without having to sand the car, then primer, then sand primer, then remask. I used to use 3 stage PPG, where I sanded once, then sprayed epoxy primer, basecoat and clearcoat.

Not everyone wants or needs or can afford a perfect paint job. I just painted my 77 F-100 sb step side with rustoleum turbo cans and although not perfect I've had plenty of compliments and not 1 negative comment about it. It cost less $100 total. It's Allina the prep. OBTW, it's flat black with very little chrome.

Painted my 66 Chevy C10 with NAPA tractor paint (single stage enamel), Ford New Holland Red. Put on three coats, wet sanded with 1500 and buffed it out - looks pretty darn good. Cost me about $125.

Awesome job. I've heard the Rust-Oleum tractor paint does not even need a clear coat; is Rust-Oleum professional just as good? Can you get away with just a good buff and polish afterward?

Well we found out that the the tractor paint needs more than one coat. We were experimenting basically and once it dried it was very dull. Tried to buff it and went down to previous brown color :(. As far as clear coat goes I’m not sure.

I always liked the Biscayne, because it was so basic. Years later, the Caprice seems to have filled that slot, the Bel-Aire is gone, and the Impala is... what???

I would say that if you require tractor or Rustoleum paint, primer, hardener, acetone, paint thinner, masking tape, masking paper, sand paper, and body fillers to paint your car, then … no; you cannot paint a car for $50.00. Probably more like $250-350 for all that but that’s still cheap for a car paint job!

Flash seems like a good dude to hang out with but his painting technique and gun need some refinement... If you wet sand it and buff it the dry spots will shine up. Putting more paint on top of that will usually make things worse.

Agreed. I'm an "old dude" too and I've been painting for about 30 years as a DIY dude. I've learned more through trial and error than anything else. One thing is true about automotive paint (single stage enamel, lacquer, or more so with base/clear) is that gun pattern (fan and volume) is critical to application and the pattern here is way, way too narrow with too much volume (pressure seemed decent however which is great!). A wide, even pattern with 50% overlap is going to get you better results. Wet sanding and buff-out will fix most of the issues you have. Time and patience will get it looking legit for almost no money. @@DEADCARRESCUE

I learned about farm equipment paint in 98 when I was working at a machine shop. They used it on the sand reclaimers. The guy who painted them always bought old trucks and repainted them with it. Was like 20 bucks a gallon then and it always looked great compared to what they started as. It’s just a shame you can’t get 400 beaters that run good anymore!

The best painter I’ve ever watched was a Puerto Rican guy down in Miami paint his 1972 Chevy Malibu convertible in his garage (gloss black w/white hood & trunk stripes) when it was pouring down rain outside. I asked him about the potential problems with all the humidity, and all he could say in his broken English was “Nah, mang…it dung matter…” That damn paint came out like GLASS. It was all in the PREPARATION that mattered to him, and damn - it surely showed afterwards…

Y'all couldn't do any worse of a paint job as me and my brother-in-law painted a pickup about 40 years ago . Everybody said it was the friendliest truck they ever saw , it was WAVING at everyone constantly . Too much BEER . Numerous metallic shades of a pretty Blue . I think it dried finally about a month later .

$2 a gallon primer that came from a yard sale. I bought 4 gallons for $8. Paint was $47 and I never charge myself for labor.

Well I think my brothers weren’t squeezing the trigger all the way. I painted the drivers side top at the beginning and it took about a minute to do it. But we were all learning and we had no runs so it was ok for us to learn on.
